Fucking nightmare: Doctors Were Preparing to Remove Their Organs. Then They Woke Up. And Doctors Wanted to Continue Anyway
"When Mr. Hoover was taken for the retrieval [of his organs], records show, he cried, pulled his knees to his chest and shook his head. A hospital doctor refused to withdraw life support. Mr. Hoover eventually recovered. Now 36, he has lingering neurological injuries.
In interviews with The Times, two former employees of the procurement organization said higher-ups tried to pressure the doctor to continue the retrieval attempt. “If it had not been for that physician, we absolutely 1,000 percent would have moved forward,” said one of them, Natasha Miller, who was in the room. Three other former Kentucky employees said they had seen similar cases."
This is absolutely why I won't donate my organs. These organ procurement organizations can do some great things, but they are fucking sadists.

I’m the same. And I’ve made it clear to those close to me that if I’m ever declared brain dead, I want them to fight to give me some time and make their own gut check assessment. It’s a rare case where they pull an organ out of someone and it turns out to be the only chance for another patient to return to full health. They’ll pull out my kidneys and give them to some other 60 year-old who lost kidney function because they got diabetes from weighing 300 pounds. Or they will buy a sick young adult another eight years of ill health with a heart their body constantly tries to reject.
I’m not talking years of being on life support, but a solid month if I don’t have associated grievous injuries like neck down paralysis or both my arms amputated. I’ve felt this way for decades but as I get older, I care less. First, because we all have to go sometime and why not help someone out? Second, because my older organs are less desirable so I have less fear that an organ procurement organization will get overeager at the prospect of me.
I know they are supposed to have a lot of checks and balances in place, but I’m never checking that box at the DMV.
