The iconic late 60s and early 70s superstar was 82.
I'm surprised a lot of these 60s and 70s rockers live so long considering the lifestyle back then.
But somehow Keith fucking Richards, who did ALL THE DRUGS and smoked like a chimney, is 81 and still going strong. He only quit smoking 5 years ago.

Will his funeral be public, or will it just be a family affair?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | June 9, 2025 7:48 PM |
I’m not going to lie, I thought he had already died.

Damn. Great talent. Too bad he burned out so quickly. Sly and the Family Stone is part of a playlist that I listen to often

For someone who dressed so flashy, there was still a modesty / dignity about him that is sorely lacking in today's celebrities. Now get off my lawn.

R1 genetics. My stepfather smoked 1-2 packs a day since he was 8 years old (yes, 8). He only quit recently. He’s healthy as a horse still.
Meanwhile I have health issues and try taking care of myself.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | June 9, 2025 8:03 PM |
You beat me to it, R11.
Anybody who went through what Sly Stone went through and lived to tell about it to the ripe old age of 82 must have some first class genetics.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | June 9, 2025 8:07 PM |
He reminded us to keep it casual and groovy in the 80s as well ❤️
by Anonymous | reply 13 | June 9, 2025 8:08 PM |
I wonder if Sly will be late for his own funeral.
He had a habit of being very late or a no-show for his concerts, which is why his credibility with promoters sank like a stone.
Madonna might be able to get away with that shit, but Sly was never on the same level of a performer as Madonna.

So he was still smoking crack at 76!
"In 2019, Sly Stone’s doctors presented him with a stark ultimatum. An addiction to crack that stretched back decades had ravaged his body, potentially to the point of no return. “They told me that if I kept smoking, I would ruin my lungs or I might die,” he says today.
In fairness, this couldn’t have come as news. It was, he says, the fourth time in recent years he had been taken to hospital in an ambulance, suffering from breathing difficulties: the most recent had occurred a mere two weeks prior to his meeting with the doctors. On each previous occasion, a doctor had presented him with the same ultimatum, which Stone had declined to believe, discharging himself from the hospital against their orders, going home and calling one of his many dealers, even if it took him an hour to struggle from his room to the hospital car park."
Jesus Christ - and I fret over drinking a bottle of wine and what it will do to my long-term health. Not saying he was in great health the last few years - but choosing to stop smoking crack at 76 after 55+ years of various addictions is mind boggling.

I saw him at Golden Gate Park when I was a kid. In our house it was his music that played all summer long with Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, Janis Joplin, The Doors, and The Beatles.
My oldest sister got the 45 of "Thank You" for Christmas in '69. When she wasn't home, I'd sneak into her room and play this on the flip side.

For the bio-pick that you just know is coming, I predict Miles Caton, who put in a strong debut in "Sinners", will be cast as Stone.
That said, I'm a sentimental fool with a taste for the melancholy and poignancy in my pop music.
I never thought I'd use these two songs in the same sentence, but I just now suddenly realized "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" as sung by Judy Garland and "Hot Fun in the Summertime" both are tied in my heart for favorite sad songs.
They both capture the relentlessness of passing time....

There's a good chapter, funny and sad, about Sly Stone in the new memoir by Peter Wolf. In an interview on his book tour in the spring, Wolf said: "Well, I was such a huge fan, and Sly was at the height of his career and he was so influential. I mean, along with James Brown, those two gentlemen created what we know as funk. James obviously came first and affected Sly , but Sly developed another kind of funk that ... everybody tried to emulate ."
