Sly Stone is DEAD TO ME!!!

The iconic late 60s and early 70s superstar was 82.

I'm surprised a lot of these 60s and 70s rockers live so long considering the lifestyle back then.

But somehow Keith fucking Richards, who did ALL THE DRUGS and smoked like a chimney, is 81 and still going strong. He only quit smoking 5 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 1June 9, 2025 7:48 PM

Will his funeral be public, or will it just be a family affair?

by Anonymousreply 2June 9, 2025 7:48 PM

I’m not going to lie, I thought he had already died.

by Anonymousreply 3June 9, 2025 7:48 PM

There's a brand new doc out about him from Questlove.

R3 Same.

by Anonymousreply 5June 9, 2025 7:50 PM

Damn. Great talent. Too bad he burned out so quickly. Sly and the Family Stone is part of a playlist that I listen to often

by Anonymousreply 6June 9, 2025 7:51 PM

For someone who dressed so flashy, there was still a modesty / dignity about him that is sorely lacking in today's celebrities. Now get off my lawn.

by Anonymousreply 7June 9, 2025 7:53 PM

The eye of the tiger is crying.

I loved their debut album. Loved it. He was highly addicted to drugs

by Anonymousreply 10June 9, 2025 8:02 PM

R1 genetics. My stepfather smoked 1-2 packs a day since he was 8 years old (yes, 8). He only quit recently. He’s healthy as a horse still.

Meanwhile I have health issues and try taking care of myself.

by Anonymousreply 11June 9, 2025 8:03 PM

You beat me to it, R11.

Anybody who went through what Sly Stone went through and lived to tell about it to the ripe old age of 82 must have some first class genetics.

by Anonymousreply 12June 9, 2025 8:07 PM

He reminded us to keep it casual and groovy in the 80s as well ❤️

I wonder if Sly will be late for his own funeral.

He had a habit of being very late or a no-show for his concerts, which is why his credibility with promoters sank like a stone.

Madonna might be able to get away with that shit, but Sly was never on the same level of a performer as Madonna.

by Anonymousreply 14June 9, 2025 8:12 PM

A true music legend. RIP, Sly.

by Anonymousreply 15June 9, 2025 8:12 PM

Wow, he looked healthy as hell at Jazzercise last week.

by Anonymousreply 16June 9, 2025 8:14 PM

Awww, Hot Fun In the Summertime was my favorite. RIP Sly.

by Anonymousreply 17June 9, 2025 8:15 PM

Dolly Parton on the line, please share your favorite memories of working with Sly on that terrific movie Rhinestone.

by Anonymousreply 18June 9, 2025 8:18 PM

Yes I thought this was Stallone

by Anonymousreply 19June 9, 2025 8:20 PM

So he was still smoking crack at 76!

"In 2019, Sly Stone’s doctors presented him with a stark ultimatum. An addiction to crack that stretched back decades had ravaged his body, potentially to the point of no return. “They told me that if I kept smoking, I would ruin my lungs or I might die,” he says today.

In fairness, this couldn’t have come as news. It was, he says, the fourth time in recent years he had been taken to hospital in an ambulance, suffering from breathing difficulties: the most recent had occurred a mere two weeks prior to his meeting with the doctors. On each previous occasion, a doctor had presented him with the same ultimatum, which Stone had declined to believe, discharging himself from the hospital against their orders, going home and calling one of his many dealers, even if it took him an hour to struggle from his room to the hospital car park."

Jesus Christ - and I fret over drinking a bottle of wine and what it will do to my long-term health. Not saying he was in great health the last few years - but choosing to stop smoking crack at 76 after 55+ years of various addictions is mind boggling.

by Anonymousreply 20June 9, 2025 8:21 PM

Sly and the Family Stone... curiously the band has never been given the recognition it deserves.

Oh no! I loved him in Stop or My Mom Will Shoot!

by Anonymousreply 24June 9, 2025 8:50 PM

We did an arrangement of this in chorus in 1970, junior high. Thanks, Sly.

I saw him at Golden Gate Park when I was a kid. In our house it was his music that played all summer long with Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, Janis Joplin, The Doors, and The Beatles.

My oldest sister got the 45 of "Thank You" for Christmas in '69. When she wasn't home, I'd sneak into her room and play this on the flip side.

I love the theme song he did for Burglar. I miss the days when studios put real effort into original soundtracks for their movies.

[quote]So he was still smoking crack at 76!

Holy shit! He sure did have good genetics. Didn't Amy Winehouse get emphysema from just a few years of crack use?

RIP, Sly. So many songs that are just great vibes.

For the bio-pick that you just know is coming, I predict Miles Caton, who put in a strong debut in "Sinners", will be cast as Stone.

That said, I'm a sentimental fool with a taste for the melancholy and poignancy in my pop music.

I never thought I'd use these two songs in the same sentence, but I just now suddenly realized "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" as sung by Judy Garland and "Hot Fun in the Summertime" both are tied in my heart for favorite sad songs.

They both capture the relentlessness of passing time....

by Anonymousreply 33June 9, 2025 10:42 PM

Was he in posession of a BBC?

by Anonymousreply 34June 9, 2025 10:45 PM

A Comet in Music. He shined so bright and unexpectedly but did not last long enough.

by Anonymousreply 35June 9, 2025 10:50 PM

His early live performances were a chaotic THRILL. Tight band, fantastic dancing, outrageous clothes, we knew every word of every song. Legend.

by Anonymousreply 36June 9, 2025 10:54 PM

[quote] Was he in posession of a BBC?

Did he ever perform on the BBC? Top of the Pops perhaps?

One of the resident morning show twat waffles on CP24 (those in Toronto will know) referred to him as Sly Stallone this morning.

Susan Dey was not a fan and will not be issuing a statement of condolence.

by Anonymousreply 41June 10, 2025 2:44 PM

“One child grows up to be, someone who just loves to learn…

And one child grows up to be, someone you’d just love to burn…”

I so relate to those lyrics, as I was both.

RIP, Sly. You were the true definition of “cool as fuck”. ❤️

by Anonymousreply 42June 10, 2025 3:02 PM

In Slash's autobiography he recounts living in the same complex as Sly and him coming over to hide from his wife and freebasing in a small closet for hours until Slash would forget he was even there

His daughter hosts 10am-noon weekdays on KCRW in LA. Great show. Poor Novena.

Was he trying to have a name similar to Sylvester Stallone, or vice versa?

by Anonymousreply 45June 10, 2025 5:18 PM

Sly Stone predates Sylvester Stallone by 3 years and was recording music long before the world had ever heard of Stallone.

Predictions for the next two celebrity deaths-Roseanne Barr and Talia Shire

by Anonymousreply 47June 10, 2025 7:38 PM

I thought that say Sly Stallone.

by Anonymousreply 48June 10, 2025 8:23 PM

Roseanne would be better off dead. She’s ruined enough lives. Probably a drug overdose along with obesity.

by Anonymousreply 49June 10, 2025 8:23 PM

The iconic bassline in “Thank You Falletin Me Be Mice Elf Again” was used in Janet’s “Rhythm Nation.”

by Anonymousreply 50June 10, 2025 8:26 PM

R47, is Talia Shire sick?

by Anonymousreply 51June 11, 2025 12:14 AM

One of the most creative American musicians ever. RIP. Shocked that he lasted this long

by Anonymousreply 52June 11, 2025 12:28 AM

R2, sometimes you’re right, and sometimes you're wrong. . .

by Anonymousreply 53June 11, 2025 12:29 AM

He outlived 3 of the 4 Pointer Sisters, who recorded the most beautiful version of Sly's song "Everybody Is A Star."

RIP, Sly Stone.

according to Wikipedia Rose and Freddy Stone are still alive? involved with southern California ministry I believe.

and I'm correct that they were not interviewed in the SLY LIVES doc?

by Anonymousreply 56June 11, 2025 4:32 PM

Sly and Brian jones can groove together

by Anonymousreply 57June 11, 2025 5:22 PM

I saw him once. It was at the concert hall where I worked. He was so fucked up and so late to the show by the time he arrived it was time for me to leave.

by Anonymousreply 58June 11, 2025 5:25 PM

There's a good chapter, funny and sad, about Sly Stone in the new memoir by Peter Wolf. In an interview on his book tour in the spring, Wolf said: "Well, I was such a huge fan, and Sly was at the height of his career and he was so influential. I mean, along with James Brown, those two gentlemen created what we know as funk. James obviously came first and affected Sly , but Sly developed another kind of funk that ... everybody tried to emulate ."

RIP

RIP.
