A car just like this was my dream car.
I LOVED Station Wagons When I Was A Kid In The 1970's

You know they still make station wagons? I have one
by Anonymous | reply 1 | June 9, 2025 4:46 PM |
I wanted one with wood panelling. It only existed on American tv
by Anonymous | reply 2 | June 9, 2025 4:49 PM |
Not true, r2. I saw wood-paneled station wagons IRL.
Like these.

I just got an Audi wagon, and it checks all the boxes for me,
by Anonymous | reply 4 | June 9, 2025 6:42 PM |
We did this already…,
by Anonymous | reply 5 | June 9, 2025 7:00 PM |
r2 my grandmother had one.

More likely that those are plastic body panels with a wood decal tacked on.

Exactly what my uncle's Country Squire had r7
by Anonymous | reply 8 | June 9, 2025 7:15 PM |
The Ford Country Squire wagons (circa mid-late 60s), had dual facing, 3rd row seats, that allegedly sat 4 people. 4 newborns maybe, but not 4 toddlers and definitely not 4 10 year olds.

r7...and? These cars were everywhere in the 70s. The "woodies" of the 60s were prevalent as well. Maybe those were what you were speaking of.
Those were around as well.

I prefer a different kind of "woody" these days.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | June 9, 2025 7:22 PM |
If you can get a woody
by Anonymous | reply 12 | June 9, 2025 7:25 PM |
Today's SUVs are what station wagons evolved into.

My sister had an Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser back in the 60s. I must admit I did enjoy that big ol' land yacht.

R13- But those Big American Station Wagons were far more comfortable than today’s SUVs.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | June 9, 2025 7:33 PM |
We had a Rambler station wagon.
It was white with a blue interior. No AC, no radio, no carpet, no power brakes, or no power steering.

The average minivan is safer, has more passenger room, has more storage capacity, and has better fuel efficiency, and costs less to operate than the average SUV.
Yet millions of Americans continue to buy SUVs to avoid the soccer mom stigma of minivans. Soccer moms trying to avoid the stigma of soccer moms. You gotta love the stupidity of the American consumer.

American carmakers stopped using real wood panels in the 1950’s.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | June 9, 2025 7:47 PM |
And so? All the way through the 80s, faux-paneled wagons were still marketed (or referred to) to as having “wood panels.”
by Anonymous | reply 19 | June 9, 2025 7:52 PM |
We had a Volkswagen bus for a while.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | June 9, 2025 7:52 PM |
I always buy station wagons. I recently tucked a rocking chair into one.

Thanks Mrs. Clampett
by Anonymous | reply 22 | June 9, 2025 7:55 PM |
we had two Olds Vista Cruisers
by Anonymous | reply 23 | June 9, 2025 8:33 PM |
R14- In the 1970's that would be considered medium at best NOT a Land Yacht.
This 1976 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser station wagon was a Land Yacht. It had a curb weight of over 5,000 lbs and a total length of over 232 inches.

The Vista Cruisers I remember from the '70s were the Cutlass line. Mid sized. But additional headroom was added.

we had one. I used to spend hours raising and lowering the back window - it eventually wore out. My sister and I used to fight for the seat in the "way back" as we called it - although there were two, we would fight about looking out each other's window.....lol ....kids.
