Sorry for the sloppy headline: “Makes me want to shoot myself”

Feels like he ran out of money. He's got good basics but it looks totally unfinished. Hardly any art and not enough accessories - and no plants/greenery.
I hate blank walls and no art or cheap, mass-reproduced art. It doesn't have to be expensive - but there is a slight investment.
There are a few nice rooms - but no warmth in so many of the rooms. Just painted walls and basic furniture. It's doesn't feel like a full design yet - like they took pics half way through the process.

There’s “eclectic” and then there’s “chaotic.”

Does he know someone at The Times? Because that was a collection of odds and ends, i thought. In a nice structure, but certainly nothing to write home about.
But I'm not a chic designer, so...

The pink is totally lost in the NYT photos.

The moon and stars decorations are tacky and cheap looking. Other than that... it's ok. Nothing mind blowing. But he seems awfully pretentious. Like an American Nicolas Fairford.

He has definite intentions, based on contemporary shelter magazines like "Dwell," but he's not able to realize them. The space is too big and style-specific, he doesn't have enough money to do it all right, and he's making some bad practical decisions (like the dinky corner sink in the master bathroom). It's a farm house, not an urban apartment.
The Zen Room is just pitiful. And very little here is expressing "femininity." Thanks NYT for showing us what NOT to do.

Yeah I'm pretty certain he ran out of money. He has some nice pieces in certain rooms, but furnishing a big house like that takes a lot of time and money.
The tell-tale signs - NO curtains or window treatments at all, the rugs are haphazard and some aren't the right size for the room, very little art (some art is leaned against the walls in some rooms, which is a fail if that is on purpose), and just a lack of 'finishing'.
It's a BIG effort - there are a lot of rooms. I don't find it inviting though. That one white bedroom with a mattress on the floor and another mattress in a corner with a small dividing curtain - WTF?
Had to get it open for the summer and fall season, I'm suspecting. He's charging around $1000 a night.
And I do NOT like the trend of having pink rooms. I don't think it ever looks good. Fine in a young girl's bedroom, but it feels immature and trendy just to be trendy.

OP and R2, you're still drunk and can't punctuation. And what a delicate to the touch curmudgeon you are. The house in the ABB slide show is quite comfortable and relaxing. My only trifling complaint is Mr. Spain hanging treacly twee stars from the ceiling and putting a bud vase on a stack of books, to gussy up his house up for the NYT.

Looks like he’s in the process of moving out

Agree with the ran-out-of-money aesthetic and nice large rooms for a historical Western MA venue, but there is some issue with window coverings in Massachusetts. When I lived there I assumed it was because most of the people I knew were young and poor, but was consistently surprised when I'd see older established folks with bare windows, The bare walls are serene to a fault, and I can't with the mirrors leaned against the wall and the bed nearly in the middle of the primary room screaming "OnlyFans!" setup.

In fairness, he’s young and I imagine purchasing that house and renovating it cost a bundle. Plus, he rents it out to strangers which limits how much he wants to spend on furnishings. Still, it’s not ready for prime time and a mistake if he thinks it will bring his design studio new business.

Fuck his prissy feminine energy, he's complete shit as a designer.
[quote]“I kind of pooh-pooh provenance, if I’m being honest,” he said.
What a bold thing to say when he can't afford one nice piece of furniture or piece of art, just shitty, spidery-legged furniture in rough shape with old rags and bits of fun fur tossed on them.
Thirty-five years ago I knew people in the East Village who furnished their apartments entirely from things found on the street. They were interesting spaces, always changing, horrible and fine things chucked together, strange objects put to strange uses or just leaned against a wall as art. The worst of these was 30x better than this sad energy shit show. Every those fucking stars hung everywhere just made the place seem like a birthday party that nobody attended.
Someone who holds himself out as a designer should delight or enrage but generate some kind of reaction beyond, "Oh, the poor thing."

R15 - now that was some expressive bitchery. I doff my hat to you sir.

Awful. The dangling stars. I would never hire him.

" former Catholic Church Rectory".... One can only imagine the history of wanton sodomy this place has seen! Perfect for an Airbnb!!

[quote] “There’s a saying, ‘If you don’t have anything nice to say, come sit next to me.’ We need that on a pillow.”
Alice Roosevelt Longworth beat you to it over 50 years ago. Ahistorical dolt. The whole “on a pillow” addendum is tired.

Exactly, R20. He's dumb as a box of hair (he could out that on a pillow), and know nothing of his trade or history -- deadly for an occupation grounded in both things.

While diversification is not at all a bad idea in this case, who wants to see this princess showing pulling up his already too short pantalones to show a bit of bare ankle...or unimaginably worse?

I really like the furniture. The author’s writing is too precious by far of course.

It's very feminine because it's two tits on a torso, you pretentious twat.

It looked really sad for a NYT design article. Who would hire this guy as a designer?
