WBD will split into two companies; merger/sale likely imminent

Streaming and studios will probably be bought by Comcast and merged with NBCUniversal.

Comcast-NBC Universal don't know what to do with their own properties.

by Anonymousreply 1June 9, 2025 2:16 PM

No media company knows what to do with their own properties these days. They still haven't got the memo that high-budget movies can be shit, too.

How is this same move going for Lionsgate?

by Anonymousreply 3June 9, 2025 2:53 PM

Wasn’t that merger a shitshow right from the start?

by Anonymousreply 4June 9, 2025 2:58 PM

Why are companies always combining and splitting up?

Fat times for investment bankers and lawyers.

The merger must be blocked. Hopefully the Trump administration will take a stand against further media conglomeration.

A merger between Comcast and WBD, now both divested of most of their linear operations (Comcast will still own NBC and Bravo, WB will still own HBO), cannot be blocked. The Justice Department allowed Disney to purchase Fox.

Comcast will merge Warner Bros. into Universal, the Warner Bros. brand will be retired. Peacock will be folded into HBO Max, which is why the HBO moniker was restored.

More evidence linear TV is dying out, and media companies are going all-in on streaming being the future of consumption.

by Anonymousreply 8June 9, 2025 3:19 PM

Does this mean that CNN will be less Republican now and more like MSNBC?

by Anonymousreply 9June 9, 2025 3:19 PM

[quote]Media executives had initially anticipated a wave of consolidation under the Trump administration, though that has not come to pass.

[quote]Any merger will require approval from Trump administration's antitrust regulators who have signaled they intend to focus on mergers that lower competition in ways that harm consumers or workers.

[quote]Zaslav has said he expects a more deal-friendly environment under a Trump administration. But during his first term, Trump repeatedly attacked CNN, and his Department of Justice moved to block the AT&T–Time Warner merger.

Hopefully the animosity will get the administration to take action.

CNN will be part of the newly formed company, it will not be sold to Comcast. Comcast no longer owns MSNBC, they divested them.
