Is anyone else here familiar with this song from the 70s?

I was pretty young, but my parents had the album.

Anyway, I heard it the other day and it's been stuck in my head ever since. And I'm not sure why, but it makes my eyes tear up. (I know, MARY!!)

I don't think I've ever heard it, but I can see why it's a bit melancholy.

I have Linda Ronstadt’s version. It opens side two of her Hasten down the Wind album. I have always liked it very much.

The women are beautiful and the lead's voice is amazing.

I like it, it's pretty.

I remember it well. Boney M was a fun group.

Interesting fact - their most popular song was the disco dance number "Rasputin." Boney M's lead singer, Bobby Farrell, died on the 94th anniversary of Rasputin's death in St. Petersburg, Russia, the same city where Rasputin was killed.

Oh, wow, I just googled and the lyrics are bible verses. Psalm 137 and Psalm 19.

I remember Rasputin, R5! Oh, those Russians.

Did Boney M ever chart in the US?

by Anonymousreply 7June 8, 2025 2:27 PM

I think so, R7.
Boney M's lead singer, Bobby Farrell

He never sang. He was to lip-sync and dance for performances.
While it had never been a secret that Bobby Farrell never sang on the group's records (Farian did the male vocals in the studio), in 1978 it became public knowledge that Maizie Williams did not sing on the studio recordings either, since "her voice wasn't suited for this kind of music" as Farian stated in an interview with German teen magazine Bravo.

It was extremely popular in Germany , not so much here in the USA,. I still have the original vinyl LP

Omg, okay. Here's the album my parents had.

I remember being obsessed with the cover art - I thought the women looked sooooo glamorous!

I'd play the title song and sit in a cardboard box and pretend I was on a rocket ship!!

I absolutely love the original by The Melodians, which later was included on the soundtrack of the seminal film [italic]The Harder They Come.[/italic]

And, yes, it gives chills when you realize many of the same issues that the ancient Judeans suffered from during the Babylonian Captivity, that were written about in the Book of Psalms, still obtained in the early-mid 20th Century in Ethiopia/Eritrea.

I like Boney M version of Bobby Hebb's 'Sunny'. It was used in 'The Umbrella Academy'.

The song that makes me tear up is Dan Fogelburgers’ “Run for the Roses” 🌹 I don’t know why.

Kansas’ “Dust in the Wind” and Duran Duran’s “Ordinary World” make me so sad.
