Trump preparing large-scale cancellation of federal funding for California
The Trump administration is preparing to cancel a large swath of federal funding for California, an effort that could begin as soon as Friday, according to multiple sources.
Agencies are being told to start identifying grants the administration can withhold from California. Sources said the administration is specifically considering a full termination of federal grant funding for the University of California and California State University systems.
“No taxpayer should be forced to fund the demise of our country,” White House spokesman Kush Desai said in a statement Friday afternoon, criticizing California for its energy, immigration and other policies. “No final decisions, however, on any potential future action by the Administration have been made, and any discussion suggesting otherwise should be considered pure speculation.”

I'm in California and was LITERALLY fuming just the other day about Gavin's new, disgusting plan to raise requirements to qualify for Medicare. Up to now California has had the most humane and reasonable income and asset requirements for Medicare. But pretty boy wants to reinstate asset limits so that anyone with more than $2000 in assets and income gets booted off. That's HELLA numbers of people who will lose insurance. You need to be freaking homeless to qualify. And this is after Newsom started going after immigrants in every which way he can.
I wonder if Trump has noticed Newsom's shift to the right and detects a window to bring a liberal state to its knees, with the help of a spineless politician.
I've always maintained I'll cling on to my beloved home state by financial fingers until I die, but this is just fucked.

R6, I think you mean medicaid Individual states have no control over Medicare, which is completely administered at the federal level.
But Medicaid, while administered at the state level, is dependent on federal grants. Newsome might have been trying to prepare the state for federal reductions, which are a big feature of the " big beautiful bill"

I’m sure great minds have already game planned this event and the responses needed. Can Calif start charging an ‘export’ tax on everything headed east? That would shake things up. Does the USA need California more or does California need the USA more?

Hmm lets see try to cut off the 4th largest economy in the world? So if California decides not to contribute to the US economy. Trump woud love it if Californai left the union though - all those electoral votes that go for dems...gone.

No. Interstate commerce is regulated by Congress (Constitution Article 1, Section 8, Clause 3), which essentially means that all States are in a free trade zone with each other.

If and when Democrats regain power, there is going to be a desire for retaliation. But retaliating against this kind of bullshit doesn’t do much. What would you do? Democrats don’t actually want to vindictively cut off funding to people in Republican states.

Yes, thank you very much. I wish they would give these programs completely different names depending on how they are funded.
It's Medicaid I was talking about, which is funded by the state. In California it is called Medi-Cal and has the 'humane and reasonable' qualifications I referred to earlier. Medi-Cal has no asset requirements. Obviously this was a godsend for people who owned a home but were low income and/or were unemployed, or anyone low income who owned a car ffs.
Medi-Cal is for people too young to qualify for Medicare. The best thing about Medi-Cal was that you didn't have to be destitute to get medical care.
Thanks Gavin, now you might have to be.
Not any more, if Newsom has his way.

" “No taxpayer should be forced to fund the demise of our country,” White House spokesman Kush Desai"".
I couldn't agree more, which is why all states should withhold their taxes from this calamitous circus sorry excuse for an administration.
This is going to happen to each blue state, Im in CT and most of my family either didn't vote or voted for the Papaya Pol Pot, always countering any of my arguments with 'but, its still a blue state'. Given they're all uneducated, sexist, racist, ignorant rubes, they didn't understand how dangerous their mentality was/is. They'll be effected by the cuts to Medicare, especially the older ones, and they were too willfully stupid, narrow-minded, ill informed by Fucks News. Theyll see how much their 'blue state bubble ' bliss is burst. Unfortunately everyone will be screwed regardless of which way they voted.
What really kills me is that all of my living elder relatives, aunts, uncles, mom, are ALL first generation Americans!

R13 I also live in California and I am also disappointed in seeing people have to have assets below $2,000 to qualify for Medi-Cal. He is doing this because he knows Trump is going to cut the federal portion and Medi-Cal is already broke. It won’t be sustainable. California completed its plan to include everyone, regardless of immigration status, to be eligible to qualify for Medi-Cal just last year. That includes all illegal/undocumented immigrants. This increased the cost of Medi-Cal considerably.
From LA Times:
“But the program has been plagued by cost overruns since it started.
The cost estimate to provide coverage to all-income eligible undocumented immigrants was $6.4 billion in the 2024-25 state budget approved last summer, which marked an increase from earlier projections.
In February, the Newsom administration told lawmakers at a budget hearing at the state Capitol that the cost of expanding coverage to all immigrants for the current year had ballooned again from $6.4 billion to $9.5 billion. The California Department of Finance attributed the increase to “higher-than-anticipated enrollment, and higher pharmacy costs.”

While it would be nice if California could provide Medi-Cal to everyone that comes into our state regardless of status, it’s not sustainable. EMTALA requires that anyone coming to an emergency department requesting evaluation or treatment of a medical condition, receives a medical screening examination. If they have an emergency medical condition, the hospital must provide stabilizing treatment, regardless of the patient's insurance status or ability to pay. That’s federal and offers care in emergency situations. It has to be enough. Otherwise, it’s the poor California citizens that will be thrown off of Medi-Cal. Undocumented workers are largely living in a grey or black-market economy and will have no issue with the $2,000 limit on assets. The first mistake was including people that are here illegally. If he hadn’t done that, he wouldn’t be looking for a solution.

To those of you claiming Medi-Cal is going broke due to illegal immigrants you are wrong.
Seniors make up a small portion of all Medi-Cal enrollees, but they’re about twice as expensive as the average enrollee because they use more medical care. [bold]The elimination of the asset test last year contributed to most of the senior enrollment growth and cost the state about $500 million more than expected, according to a report by the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst’s Office. [/bold]
Still, lawmakers during the hearing questioned the prudence of kicking seniors and people with disabilities off of the program and whether it would actually save money in the long run.
Assemblymember Pilar Schiavo, a Democrat from Santa Clarita, said these groups would need more expensive care like nursing home stays or homeless services if the asset test were reinstated.
“This is going to lead to more homelessness of seniors and the disabled. That’s what’s going to happen, and that will cost our state money too,” Schiavo said

R34 I was talking about the unexpected increase in Medi-Cal enrollment after the asset requirement was ditched was NOT due to largely to undocumented immigrants as eeryone wants to think but to seniors and the disabled. They need more care and thus are way more expensive. This is the group that will be most affected with the new asset requirement if it passes.
Because undocumented immigrants might still qualify for Medi-Cal even with a high asset requirement, Newsom wants to block them from enrolling based on their legal status. They would still get emergency services but have to pay premiums for everything else. Immigrants already enrolled would not be kicked off. And keep in mind these numbers bandied about how much 'illegals' are costing California are estimates because as it stands now you can enroll in these programs without showing documentation. Thus they might be vastly overstated.

And here's another estimate about what undocumented immigrants CONTRIBUTE to the economy. You don't hear about that as much. If we gave them work permits they would contribute even more.

You can’t destroy an enemy you don’t understand. This will not stop with defunding DEI, trans, South Africa, foreign subawards, Columbia, Harvard, California, Princeton, etc. the goal is the liquidation of every accredited university in the United States, a free press, the rule of law and America as democracy.
