Princess Leonor Arrives in New York After Five Months at Sea

Princess Leonor has just concluded her voyage aboard the Juan Sebastián de Elcano, a training ship used by the Spanish navy. Five months after her departure from the port of Cadiz, the heir to the throne arrived on Wednesday in New York, the ship's last stop in America, where a large group of journalists, authorities and members of the Royal Household staff were waiting for her at the Manhattan cruise terminal.

Before arriving, the midshipmen paid tribute to the two mates of the Mexican training ship Cuauhtémoc, who lost their lives on May 17 when the ship collided with the Brooklyn Bridge, reports RTVE.

The Royal House has confirmed that Elcano will remain docked at pier 88 of the New York port until June 10, when the companions of the Princess of Asturias are scheduled to re-embark to return to Spain.

Princess Leonor will return to Spain by plane, but during the next few days she will take part, together with the other midshipmen, in the activities scheduled for this stopover.

According to ¡Hola! this week, one of these activities will include the participation, along with other Spaniards, including Victoria de Hohenlohe, the Duchess of Medinaceli, who has been living in New York with her husband for the past two months. Another of the activities planned is the attendance at Carnegie Hall to the show A Musical Fantasy from Spain, which will be performed on Wednesday by the Orquesta Titular del Teatro Real de Madrid.

She looks classy

by Anonymousreply 1June 5, 2025 2:23 AM

Very pretty.

by Anonymousreply 2June 5, 2025 2:24 AM

What a wonderful upbringing she's having.

by Anonymousreply 3June 5, 2025 3:07 AM

R3 True.

by Anonymousreply 4June 5, 2025 3:08 AM

Fortunate they didn’t drift into a bridge.

by Anonymousreply 5June 5, 2025 3:27 AM

In addition to being queen of Spain, Leonor will also become commander-in-chief of the military.

by Anonymousreply 6June 5, 2025 4:09 AM

Is this one of the goth kids who posed with the Obamas?

by Anonymousreply 7June 5, 2025 4:26 AM

R7 here.

No, those were the children of the president at the time.

by Anonymousreply 8June 5, 2025 4:29 AM

Is she the one who ran her boat into the Brooklyn Bridge?

Damn nepo baby needs to learn how to steer.

by Anonymousreply 9June 5, 2025 4:29 AM

R6 I did not know that,

Oh, the Spanish sailors and their excellent bulges! Whoo!

by Anonymousreply 12June 5, 2025 7:02 AM

The princess appears to have packed on a peso or two in her five months at sea.

by Anonymousreply 13June 5, 2025 7:09 AM

King Charles is head of the British military, r10. This is pretty standard for monarchies and other heads of state too, e.g, the president of the United States.

by Anonymousreply 14June 5, 2025 9:45 AM

R13 Navy food will do that.

by Anonymousreply 15June 5, 2025 4:47 PM

I'm glad they're making her do military service--I think otherwise royals tend to grow up to be too spoiled, although even then it's no guarantee they won;t be (look at Prince Harry and at the Duke of Windsor).

Both of Felipe's and Letizia's daughters are (unsurprisingly) very pretty, but I've never heard anything about their personalities.

by Anonymousreply 16June 5, 2025 5:54 PM

They are not making her do service. She chose to serve.

by Anonymousreply 17June 5, 2025 9:18 PM

[quote] She "chose" to serve.

FIFY

In rankings of royal families of Europe, Felipe has a net worth estimated at €2.8M to €20M. He owns no real estate. The palaces he lives in are owned by Spain. He and his wife and children --to my view-- take some pains to keep their noses clean, to be champions for Spain, and to public service.

His exiled father, Juan Carlos I, by contrast is a thieving, imperious bastard, competent only at making himself a billionaire by accepting dodgy gifts. He has had little time for making his job to promote Spain and its people. He has been too busy chasing skirts, setting up his whores in great style, and lining his pockets.

Felipe is aware that the monarchy was resuscitated only at the death of Franco and with great controversy; that his father's graft threatened the family reputation and the very reason for them to exist as a royal family; and he understands of how a lean and modern royal family grounded in devotion to public service and a willingness to shine the spotlight on other persons and institutions is the path forward (and for survival.)

For all his father's horrible examples, the current royal family keeps it's nose clean, has cut it's modest salaries by 20%, avoids the appearance of conflicts of interest, and generally does a respectable job of titular royals. Does a king lend a greater light to making an annual award for poetry, or for scholarship in art, or the opening of a refurbished public building, a military parade or honors and other ceremonies? It can do, I think, sometimes better than a political appointee, by being assiduously non-political and bring an historical perspective to public events.

Whether or not there should be a king of Spain, I don't have a strong opinion. But I would say that Felipe, Letizia, and children are respectable models of a modern figural royal family, providing some small dimension to Spanish life beyond merely living in sumptuous palaces they don't own.

by Anonymousreply 19June 5, 2025 11:53 PM

She is very impressive. She has learned Catalan and Arabic, which are very relevant to her future role as Queen. She really is a very together young woman, very well brought up.

by Anonymousreply 20June 6, 2025 12:33 AM

Leonor reuniting with her mother was heartfelt.

Pretty girl.

But chunky.

by Anonymousreply 22June 6, 2025 9:56 AM

R16 said by someone , who must himself be spoiled , who did not take his own advice , while he preaches to a forum full of spoiled men , who mostly did not take his advice.

Spoiled was not my word but if the shoe fits….

by Anonymousreply 23June 6, 2025 10:12 AM

She and her shipmates went to a concert at Carnegie Hall.

I am unmoved by your unmotivated random attempt at an attack, r23.

Try a little harder next time.

by Anonymousreply 25June 6, 2025 3:51 PM

That’s not chunky, you cabbage head; that’s a strong core and a great gun show.

I feel we have to peel you away from the boney-assed lollipop-headed ideal.

by Anonymousreply 26June 6, 2025 3:56 PM

R25 thanks for your military service to your country.

by Anonymousreply 27June 6, 2025 3:58 PM

Violence! Violence!

by Anonymousreply 28June 6, 2025 3:59 PM

Five weeks at sea with a ship full of men? She must have come back with a big red snapper!

by Anonymousreply 29June 6, 2025 4:08 PM

She is delightfully smart and traditional and hard-working.

Pretty is a bonus.

Team Leonor!

by Anonymousreply 30June 6, 2025 4:22 PM

R27. Thank you for your service !

by Anonymousreply 31June 6, 2025 4:36 PM

R31 do you consider everyone who does not serve to be spoiled? Or is this just related to Royals that don’t serve and end up being spoiled ? You are the one that implied that 99.6% of DL was spoiled because they never served not me. I have never made such an insulting claim.

Mock away big guy,.

by Anonymousreply 32June 6, 2025 4:59 PM

I’m mocking the automatic and excessive deification of people who serve in the military.

by Anonymousreply 33June 6, 2025 5:23 PM

It’s a beautiful sail training ship with a very handsome crew. I’ve been onboard during two of her port calls and the Spaniards know how to party. They don’t get going until midnight, though.

by Anonymousreply 34June 6, 2025 6:04 PM

We need to stop them illegal Mexicans like her from invading ‘Murica, using their foreign tongue and hitting our bridges!

by Anonymousreply 35June 6, 2025 6:09 PM

R34 Cool. Why were you onboard?

by Anonymousreply 36June 6, 2025 8:55 PM

I would think many lesbians would find her [italic]very[/italic] attractive.

by Anonymousreply 37June 6, 2025 9:11 PM

Her Canefaced Majesty Queen Sofia must be ecstatic at the fact that she has attractive grandchildren.

by Anonymousreply 38June 6, 2025 9:15 PM

R37 Definitively

by Anonymousreply 39June 6, 2025 9:47 PM

Probably great symbolic importance that Spain's future Queen is serving with the Navy--I assume this service branch is the descendant of the Armada.

by Anonymousreply 40June 6, 2025 10:00 PM

R36 In NYC during Fleet Week with my Navy officer boyfriend in the 1980’s and in Charlestown (Boston) at the invitation of the Captain who I knew for a Tall Ships event in the late aughts.

by Anonymousreply 41June 6, 2025 10:59 PM

R41, you need to gather a few of these things together. OT, but somewhere you have to list the most expensive gathering that sucked - like McDonald’s at the White House.

by Anonymousreply 42June 7, 2025 5:05 AM

R42 - this makes no sense.

by Anonymousreply 43June 7, 2025 6:12 AM

She definitely is not chunky. She looks super athletic. Or like a very healthy Swedish milkmaid. And yes, she gives me strong lez vibes.

by Anonymousreply 44June 7, 2025 6:27 AM

She's not fat ffs. She looks great!

by Anonymousreply 45June 7, 2025 6:30 AM

Armada just means fleet, r40.

by Anonymousreply 46June 7, 2025 8:22 AM

R46 I think R40 means the Armada of the 16th century.

by Anonymousreply 47June 7, 2025 5:06 PM

I know what he means, r47, but the armada of the 16th century was just a fleet, and one assembled for a specific campaign, which it lost. I'm not sure how it's meant form the origin of today's Spanish navy.

by Anonymousreply 48June 7, 2025 5:23 PM

I agree she looks terrific. She is not model-thin like her mother, but that's actually to be encouraged. She looks like she's in great shape.

It really fucks up these young royals (especially the ones who are going to be queen regnant someday, like Victoria of Sweden and catherine-Amalia of the Netherlands) when the tabloids fixate too much on their weight, expecting them to be as thin as Kate Middleton. Victoria had an eating disorder, and Catherine-Amalia has really suffered from the nasty comments about the fact she's not thin. These women are not actresses or mdoels: they're royals, and they should not be expected to be as thin as movie stars.
