The "Night of the Living Dead" (1990) remake

This film got a lot of shit when it was first released, but it seems audiences have warmed up to it over the years. I adore the original film, but I think this was a fantastic modernized take with a slightly nastier edge. Tony Todd (RIP) and Patricia Tallman had very good chemistry in this. George Romero wrote the updated screenplay too, so the project obviously had his blessing. Special effects master Tom Savini directed, though it apparently was a bad experience for him. It's having its 35th anniversary this year and is supposedly getting a director's cut release for the first time. Are you a fan?

OP - I agree with you. The original was a masterpiece, but the remake stood its ground. Same with The Dawn of the Dead remake, (which featured Ty Burrell as a creepy villain years before Modern Family).

Never seen it. Agree about the Dawn of the Dead remake.

Part of what makes the original so creepy is the way that it’s made. Will have to check out the remake.

I loved the original, especially in the end when she shot that obnoxious guy in the head. "Here's another one for the fire".

Sorry I meant the remake.

The now-defunct indie label Twilight Time (who usually did good releases) put this out on Blu-ray about 10 years ago. The transfer was abysmal. I am not sure how they got away with it. There are comparisons people have done to the old DVD, and the Blu-ray presentation is so dark you hardly can see anything. Strangely, Tom Savini allegedly approved the release. The Australian label Umbrella Entertainment reissued it a couple years later, and that transfer is superior and wasn't fucked with. Sony has since released their own North American Blu-ray which is apparently also very good, though I haven't seen that transfer.
