Why has there never been an Andy Warhol biopic?

Or musical?

He's always a minor character in films about other people.

this will probably flop

by Anonymousreply 1June 4, 2025 6:36 PM

Wasn't he gay? Just get Cory Michael Smith, he looks very much like him and is the better actor. And it's not like the masses will see this because of Leto anyway.

by Anonymousreply 2June 4, 2025 6:40 PM

Who would play him? Viola Davis?

by Anonymousreply 3June 4, 2025 6:41 PM

Likely because overall he simply was not interesting. He was like Zsa Zsa Gabor, famous for being famous. His "artwork" was pure shit and only sold for such high prices because of the fame of his name.

He was also a weirdo.

by Anonymousreply 4June 4, 2025 6:42 PM

God r4 is so ignorant

by Anonymousreply 5June 4, 2025 6:43 PM

R3 No, Viola is playing Valerie Solanas.

by Anonymousreply 6June 4, 2025 7:02 PM

Andy was so passive in his demeanor it is hard to imagine him as the leading character in a film.

But he has many times been played as an important supporting character in films: by Jared Harris in I SHOT ANDY WARHOL, by Guy Pearce in FACTORY GIRL, by David Bowie in BASQUIAT.

He also is a character in the opera JACKIE O by Michael Daugherty.

R7 - don't care if he was passive or boring - he was surrounded by SO MANY characters and people that he promoted himself.

That alone would be entertaining as hell. Then there's being shot, his boyfriend who died of AIDS, his films, his magazine, his art, his friendship with Basquiat.

I think the problem is - there are so many interesting times in his life and so many people, how do you winnow it down to 2 hrs of material?

You'd have to take a part of his life with some flashbacks for background.

by Anonymousreply 8June 4, 2025 7:42 PM

A great biography of him would be as entertaining as hell, but a biopic would need to focus on an event or period from his life to be interesting.

No, Meryl Streep (click, click, click)

by Anonymousreply 10June 4, 2025 11:03 PM

R3 = Juilliard

by Anonymousreply 11June 4, 2025 11:10 PM

Why?

There's no there there.

by Anonymousreply 12June 5, 2025 12:05 AM

I think they did a good job with the Warhol Diaries on Netflix or wherever it was. Very easy to develop.

You'd think Murphy would have been all over this by now.

by Anonymousreply 13June 5, 2025 12:20 AM

R4 You are correct.

by Anonymousreply 14June 5, 2025 12:42 AM

Just put a white fright wig on Demi. It will be a good follow up to her Oscar nominated role.

by Anonymousreply 15June 5, 2025 12:46 AM

Because he was boring.

by Anonymousreply 16June 5, 2025 12:48 AM

I'm pretty sure Gen X'ers, millennials and beyond don't give rat ass about Warhol existence.

by Anonymousreply 17June 5, 2025 12:54 AM

As others have said - a good biopic (as opposed to a biography) needs a focused story arc and a non-passive lead character to work well.

While Warhol’s public persona cultivated a flat affect and an extremely passive aura that doesn’t mean he was like that in private - he was wildly ambitious, manipulative - and he attended Mass every day — so there’s some interesting tension there. The before and after of his shooting could provide a strong narrative framework - it certainly seems possible.

by Anonymousreply 18June 5, 2025 1:00 AM

I've read his biography and he was anything but boring. He was utterly fascinating. I agree his artwork is meh, but not his influence.

by Anonymousreply 19June 5, 2025 1:03 AM

Reading through the AIDS years in the Diaries was both a chilling and a heartbreaking experience. Focusing on the relationship between Andy and his deeply-closeted Hollywood boyfriend could result in a fabulous film, if done tastefully and sensitively. Not sure Leto is the right choice for Andy, though. I guess I'll keep an open mind and give it a chance.
