You can answer yes or no. I think most 25 years don't know who they are
Sincere Query. Do You Think A 25 Year Born In 2000 Knows Who Orson Welles And Laurence Olivier Is

What’s a drive in?

Are you assuming the person is gay or not? It makes a big difference
by Anonymous | reply 2 | June 4, 2025 12:43 AM |
If they're interested in film or theatre history, yes, OP
by Anonymous | reply 3 | June 4, 2025 12:44 AM |
They are of the Olde- we are of the New.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | June 4, 2025 12:45 AM |
No. I’m 50 and haven’t seen much of their work. I know who they are of course but someone born 25 years later? I don’t think so.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | June 4, 2025 12:45 AM |
No Oh, Dear?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | June 4, 2025 12:50 AM |
They might. My 15 year old son took a film class in high school where they watched “Citizen Kane,” “Singing in the Rain,” and “Vertigo,” so some of the classic film stars are on his radar, and likely would be for some 25 year olds too.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | June 4, 2025 12:51 AM |
Only film students, otherwise nope. Dusty old actors in their book. To be fair, their no one even in their 60's or 70's really brings them up as a topic of conversion anymore. Their significance relative to the movie industry has long past their relevance. You might as well be asking why people don't like silent films anymore. They were important for the times, but quite irrelevant now.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | June 4, 2025 12:56 AM |
No

I brought out an old rotary phone for my nephew, I should have recorded it, he had no idea how to use it & why it had a cord........ We were in disbelief of each other!!! Yes we were high.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | June 4, 2025 1:04 AM |
Very few of them. I imagine not so many born in this century even see contemporary film as particularly relevant, much less film from 50-80 years ago.
But can they master subject-verb agreement when phrasing a question in a thread title?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | June 4, 2025 1:07 AM |
* who Orson Welles and Lawrence Olivier ARE.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | June 4, 2025 1:08 AM |
No, I barely do and was born in 1990.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | June 4, 2025 1:11 AM |
Orson wells, yes. Olivier… maybe they know the name but that’s about it. And this is limited to high achieving young people with an educational focus in the arts and humanities. Aside from movie obsessives, Poor kids, stupid kids and kids focused on business or tech would have no clue
by Anonymous | reply 14 | June 4, 2025 1:21 AM |
I worked with a guy who had two teen sons and they refused to watch movies that were black and white. He told them they were missing out of seeing some excellent stuff but they didn't care.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | June 4, 2025 1:29 AM |
Conversely, does OP know any TikTok or IG stars? Yes, you and po-po that all you want but it is where young creative people reside these days. Wilful ignorance of current day social media is just another form of self imposed isolation and cognitive dissonance.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | June 4, 2025 1:35 AM |
Welles and Olivier died 40 and 36 years ago.
Very few 25 year olds would have had much occasion to know much about either. Unless they were devotees of Turner Classic Movies channel, the children of cinephiles, studied film history, or had some combination of serious curiosity and a richly varied education, then no.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | June 4, 2025 1:43 AM |
A 25 year?? Most 25 years??
Who cares about Orson and Larry - Do you know what English is, OP?
by Anonymous | reply 18 | June 4, 2025 1:47 AM |
Nope.
They also likely don’t know who Robert Redford or Elizabeth Taylor were either.
They might have a clue about Marilyn Monroe and James Dean, whose images have become “icons” — but even there, they probably have never actually watched the work of either.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | June 4, 2025 1:57 AM |
To be fair, I couldn't pick Beyonce or Cristina Aguilera out of a police lineup, or identify any of their music...
by Anonymous | reply 20 | June 4, 2025 2:01 AM |
I met a guy the other day who I think is in his early thirties. If you can imagine it, he had no idea who Sondra Prill is. I’ve never felt so old — I was horrified.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | June 4, 2025 2:12 AM |
R15, I know people in their 40s who won't watch black and white movies. It's sad.
I also know people who refuse to watch silent films - these aren't even tweens but people well into adulthood
by Anonymous | reply 22 | June 4, 2025 2:17 AM |
Just think, OP, no one knows (or cares) who YOU are!
Catch my drift?
by Anonymous | reply 23 | June 4, 2025 2:29 AM |
People born in OP's year don't know what subject-verb agreement is.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | June 4, 2025 2:37 AM |
25-year-olds born in 2000 probably don't, but 25-year-olds born in 1999 may
by Anonymous | reply 25 | June 4, 2025 3:24 AM |
Hopefully they’ll know the different applications of “are” and “is”, OP.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | June 4, 2025 3:31 AM |
Many of the younger Youtubers I check out definitely have an appreciation for black and white cinema. Some of the comments are cringe-worthy, but I really enjoy watching the youngsters have their eyes opened to great artists. And, yes, I do know Beyonce and Rihanna and other contemporary artists.
Here's a young black guy reacting to Judy Garland for the first time.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | June 4, 2025 3:59 AM |
Hmmm. Interesting question.
I was 25 in 2005. I knew who both of those guys were. Maybe not their actual work, but I knew their names and that they were famous old time actors. And I wasn't really a film guy.

You know the Eve Harrington clubs - that they've got in most of the girls' high schools?
Members of those discuss Welles and Olivier.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | June 4, 2025 4:29 AM |
absolutely not
by Anonymous | reply 30 | June 4, 2025 8:41 AM |
Oh honey. Kids today don't even know who the Beatles are.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | June 4, 2025 12:22 PM |
Oh Dear. They have no reason to live. Drink the nightshade pronto.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | June 4, 2025 1:01 PM |
Who is they?
by Anonymous | reply 33 | June 4, 2025 1:28 PM |
Who does they hope to be?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | June 4, 2025 1:54 PM |
It depends on the 25 year old. Some rando pulled off the street? Not likely. A 25 year old in film school? They'd better.
I don't know what generation you are, OP, but unless it's Silent Gen 25 year olds in your generation likely wouldn't fare much better with this question.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | June 4, 2025 2:32 PM |
R31, yes, they do. That's why the Beatles have good streaming numbers
by Anonymous | reply 36 | June 4, 2025 2:55 PM |
Well, to be fair, most people since the 1980s only knew Orson Wells from the wine commercials.

Years ago I decided that no one cared about history or knew anymore who (as an example) Charles Lindbergh was. (I forget why. Some existential discussion or something). I asked everyone I saw one day if they knew who he was. A Vermont cop was the closest- "wasn't he the guy who kidnapped and killed his own kid"
