Starting this thread because today I discovered that Bobby Caldwell isn’t black. Apparently everyone knew but me haha. For decades I had even assumed What You Won’t Do For Love was by Stevie Wonder. (In my defence it’s a pretty straight homage, much like how Van Morrison and Steve Winwood aped Ray Charles’ phrasings). But full credit, Caldwell played all those instruments too. What a phenomenal voice.
Soulful Rock and Roll Kings as Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison are too simply too associated with the genesis of popular rock to make the cut, though they should probably be in the top 3.
Personal honourable mentions to Rick Astley, Peter Cetera, Steve Winwood, Phil Collins, multiple members of the Eagles and Michael Bolton (yes, seriously).
I have to say the British outdo themselves as soul singers.

Sorry bot sorry but Every Time You Go Away haunted the Adult Contemporary radio station my mother listened to and it bores me to this day.

Peter Cetera is a stretch and Phil Collins has perhaps the most grating, coarse voice in pop-music history.

You can’t tell Bobby Caldwell from Stevie Wonder, OP - they sound nothing alike - so your taste is dubious to say the least.

No Righteous Brothers?! Heresy.

All of these singers are dull except Rod Stewart and Van Morrison (and I guess Joe Cocker). Why would you listen to them when you can listen to Al Green?

They only taught white music at Juilliard, which is why I only have a spoken word Grammy.

Eric Burdon and Leon Russell? Or are they too blues-rockish more than influenced by rhythm and blues?

Paul Weller, Martin Fry, Boy George...

My bad, R14. Although both “brothers” merit recognition here, not just Bobby.

You’re right r9/r22. Both Brothers should rightly be there; I am a biased against Bill Medley to an extent because of the suckitude that is I’ve Had The Time Of My Life. His performance was fine, I just dislike the song. And I never gave You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling its Righteous credit due to the Top Gun karaoke getting into my head before the actual recording.

What part of “male, blue-eyed soul” confused you, R21?
It wasn’t that hard of an assignment.

Coarse? Er, not really. Are you confusing him with someone else.

There are great reaction videos over on YouTube of people discovering that Bobby Caldwell is not black.
I mentioned Cory Wells over on the Three Dog Night thread. How about Robert Palmer.

No. Not even in the slightest.
Listening to Phil Collins reach for a high note is akin to the sounds of relief from extended constipation.

Bobby Caldwell stands alone — his hit song sounded so authentically “soul/R&B” in every aspect, that his small record company TK Records initially tried to hide/downplay his race, as their label and genre was pure R&B.
Another one for this list is the earlier Doobies lead singer Tom Johnston. Lead vocalist on Long Train Runnin’ (aka “without love… where would you be now?”), Black Water, China Grove, and Listen To The Music.
