Jonathan Joss was found dead at his home in San Antonio, Texas, on Sunday, June 1 Police say a suspect is in custody and has been booked for murder The suspect is a neighbor of Joss, PEOPLE can confirm Jonathan Joss has died at the age of 59.

The King of the Hill voice actor was shot and killed on Sunday, June 1, in San Antonio, Texas, police confirmed to PEOPLE. According to police, authorities were dispatched to a shooting in progress at around 7 p.m., where they found Joss lying “near the roadway.”

Despite attempting “life saving measures” while waiting for EMS, when paramedics arrived, they pronounced Joss dead at the scene.

Officers quickly found and detained a suspect, 56-year-old Sigfredo Alvarez Cejam, who had fled the scene in a vehicle. PEOPLE can confirm that the suspect is a neighbor of Joss. He has now been booked for murder, and the investigation is still ongoing, per police.

He voiced John Redcorn. From the husband:

[quote]“My husband Jonathan Joss and I were involved in a shooting while checking the mail at the site of our former home. That home was burned down after over two years of threats from people in the area who repeatedly told us they would set it on fire. We reported these threats to law enforcement multiple times and nothing was done,” de Gonzales wrote. “Throughout that time we were harassed regularly by individuals who made it clear they did not accept our relationship. Much of the harassment was openly homophobic. When we returned to the site to check our mail we discovered the skull of one of our dogs and its harness placed in clear view. This caused both of us severe emotional distress. We began yelling and crying in response to the pain of what we saw. While we were doing this a man approached us. He started yelling violent homophobic slurs at us. He then raised a gun from his lap and fired. Jonathan and I had no weapons. We were not threatening anyone. We were grieving. We were standing side by side. When the man fired Jonathan pushed me out of the way. He saved my life.”

Did the neighbor dig up a dead dog Joss and his husband had already buried or did he murder the dog as well?

r5, their house was burnt down in January killing their dogs so I assume dug up.

I think this is the environment that our current state of political discourse is causing or enabling. For the life of me (or literally for my life) I would not live as a gay couple in any rural part of a red state. I don’t think the risk, or even just the worry over being left alone, would be worth it. This type of behavior from the suspect will be normalized by way too many people in this country who think they have the right to Christian-wash their neighborhoods. I shudder to read the inevitable comments on places like Twitter.

by Anonymousreply 8June 2, 2025 9:56 PM

I wish no LGTBQ was forced to live in a red state.

I’m not naive and I know violence and bias happen everywhere, but I just feel red states are decidedly more unsafe.

by Anonymousreply 9June 2, 2025 10:06 PM

Once again, cops are less than useless.

by Anonymousreply 10June 2, 2025 10:10 PM

Someone else claiming to be an ex of 13 years posted on Facebook his death was a long time coming due to his own actions and need for attention. They claimed it had absolutely nothing to do with him being gay.

by Anonymousreply 11June 2, 2025 10:11 PM

It's unlikely the murder was due to homophobia, not just because the husband is a trans man who wouldn't pass to the neighbors but because Joss spent years terrorizing some of his neighbors while struggling with his mental health and drug addiction. Joss had a breakdown at a King of the Hill event a couple nights before this happened; he was very unstable leading up to it.

Authorities haven't called the house fire arson so far. In fact, Joss himself previously speculated it was either his fault (for having faulty wiring and improperly using a portable propane heater in the house during a cold snap) or a result of vandalism committed by his ex-wife. The husband is also unwell and possibly grifting.

by Anonymousreply 12June 2, 2025 10:17 PM

R12 I love how little you speculate. Also impressive cop bootlicking ;)

by Anonymousreply 13June 2, 2025 10:19 PM

r11, sounds like his ex is revealing his own self to be a total piece of shit. Unless Jonathan was pointing a gun or something like that at the perpetrator, there can be no excuse for killing him.

by Anonymousreply 14June 2, 2025 10:19 PM

R11 - riiight - let's just believe all Facebook posts - it couldn't be a manufactured post from a right winger, right?

Why would you live in an area with these types of neighbors?

R12 - where did you get this info? Or are you just copying what you've read on some social media site?

by Anonymousreply 15June 2, 2025 10:20 PM

R15 I just stated what was posted dumb f***. Why don't you simmer down or go f*** yourself retard.

by Anonymousreply 16June 2, 2025 10:23 PM

R13, I'm a huge King of the Hill fan and have kept up with Joss online for years, dreading the day something like this would happen. He was a very sick man and the fire made everything even worse.

The moderators of the King of the Hill subreddit having been deleting threads about this at a rapid clip for the past two days. That's where news of his death was broken last night, which I shared in the King of the Hill reboot thread, including a link to a deleted thread. But few Joss fans are surprised by any of this, just deeply saddened he didn't get the help he needed.

Much of what I just shared was an open secret since he frequently over-shared on social media, but his breakdown at reboot event was filmed and is available for anyone to see. If his neighbors aren't talking to the press yet, they will soon enough.

by Anonymousreply 22June 2, 2025 11:04 PM

After reading through this thread, I was trying to find his social media accounts to see what kind of "crazy things" he was saying there.

I didn't find anything, but there was an interesting reddit thread, where a couple of commenters said they were at an event where Jonathan went off the rails:

[quote] Jonathan Joss with his drunken speech at the KOTH revival panel… I have the full video…..

[quote] pickles8301

[quote] I was there, it was INSANE. He basically started talking to the panel from the audience, just blubbering about random stuff. The panel on stage were obviously thrown off, stuttering over their words, eyes wide open in shock, and asking to repeat the question from the moderator. It was very awkward, and even though the audience moved on, Mike Judge addressed it about 15-20 min later stating that John Redcorn was going to be featured in 6 episodes of the new season

[quote] coreyinkato

[quote] Awkward is an understatement.

[quote] He stood up and said he wanted to say a few words about Johnny but he quickly went off the rails. The audience got really quiet, you could feel the tension take over the room. I don't think anyone had any idea where it was going. Finally Jonathon ended with "I'll just shut up" and he walked down the right aisle toward the stage, took a left in front of the 1st row and walked to the left eventually going up the left aisle.

Okay regardless if he was a little mentally unstable or not, they still arrested someone for the murder. Quite a few of us are mentally unstable on this board.

by Anonymousreply 25June 3, 2025 12:00 AM

Our Tx Guv Greg Abbott and/or Ken Paxton (running for US Senate), will no doubt chime in as a champion for the murderer. Reminds me of 1988 Dallas hate crime I am familiar with. Man murders 2 gay men and the Judge gives murderer a slap on the wrist. Here is the Judges' exact statement at sentencing: 'These two guys who got killed wouldn't have been killed if they hadn't been cruising the streets picking up teenage boys. I don't much care for queers cruising the street.' I fucking hate these evil homophobic pricks

by Anonymousreply 26June 3, 2025 12:13 AM

I find it really odd that on a gay message board there are so many that are rushing to provide excuses for the gay man's death. Even IF he had mental issues, and even IF he had a beef with the neighbors, that's no reason for him to be MURDERED by a neighbor. There are very, very few things that justify taking another man's life. The fact that conservative Texas cops have arrested someone and that person is currently charged with murder should probably suggest to everyone that the gay man did not in fact deserve to die. FFS, dudes!

by Anonymousreply 29June 3, 2025 12:40 AM

In a statement to PEOPLE on June 2, Nick Offerman revealed that Joss’ former costars have been leaning on another as they process the loss.

“The cast has been texting together about it all day and we’re just heartbroken,” Offerman wrote. “Jonathan was such a sweet guy and we loved having him as our Chief Ken Hotate. A terrible tragedy.”

Joss appeared in a recurring role as the leader of the Native American Wamapoke Tribe. He spent five years on the beloved sitcom, which starred major names such as Offerman, Amy Poehler, Rashida Jones, Chris Pratt, Aubrey Plaza, Adam Scott and more.

On the morning of June 2, PEOPLE confirmed that the King of the Hill voice actor was dead at age 59 after being shot by his neighbor. According to police, authorities responded to a shooting in progress at around 7 p.m., where they found Joss lying “near the roadway.”

They attempted to administer “life saving measures” while waiting for EMS, but Joss was pronounced dead at the scene when paramedics arrived.

You can find one of the interviews with Joss in which he says he either started the fire by accident or it was an act of vandalism by Googling this headline: "'King of the Hill,’ ‘Parks and Rec’ actor loses San Antonio home, dogs in fire."

Yesterday, on a podcast, he mentioned that some of his friends thought he started the fire to collect insurance money. That segues into jokes about his dead dogs, and 'jokes' that his neighbors were scared of him and wanted him dead. He also mentions the ex-wife he often ranted about and thought might've set the fire:

[quote]"My ex-wife is involved in Texas, San Antonio real estate, and she was kind of messing with me," Joss told his hosts of the fire. "Because I've been in mental wards and stuff, the courts don’t believe me when I tell them things are happening. But my house got burned down. They could not rule out arson."

The story that circulated on fan boards in the months (possibly years) leading up to his death was that his ex, like several of his neighbors, wanted the property condemned. It had been in a dangerous state of disrepair for some time before the fire.

by Anonymousreply 32June 3, 2025 1:15 AM

R27 no one's rushing to defender excuse anything. People are just stating what else is being speculated or outright being said by people that were close to this manner at least claim to be. The people rushing are the ones to believe that this was something caused by homophobia which if later it's proven it wasn't helps people to say gays at large life credibility and just want to play victim.

by Anonymousreply 33June 3, 2025 1:28 AM

The killer apparently was yelling homophobic things when he shot—so this seems like a hate crime to me

by Anonymousreply 34June 3, 2025 2:07 AM

Some on DL are desperate to show that homophobia no longer exists. So they can say trans are the cause of all the problems gays face

by Anonymousreply 35June 3, 2025 2:09 AM

by Anonymousreply 36June 3, 2025 2:39 AM

by Anonymousreply 37June 3, 2025 2:45 AM

I mean, if you read the account in the New York Post, which does contain factual information, it seems there is more to the story here. This sounds more like a neighborhood dispute gone awry than a hate crime.

by Anonymousreply 38June 3, 2025 2:46 AM

Here's a typical discussion (from 2023, but there were many over the years) in which fans expressed concern for Jonathan's well-being. He live-streamed a lot and sometimes drugs, paranoia, and weapons were common threads. This was pre-fire, when his biggest source of depression was his wife leaving him. If people wanted to request police welfare checks they were advised against it since he was armed and the situation could escalate quickly. Acting gigs were the one thing that seemed to improve his mood, but he felt mistreated during this current round of Hulu publicity.

Doesn’t matter if the guy was on drugs before, if the killer was spiting homophobic shit and then shoots him, that’s a hate crime.

According to the partner’s statements, they reported the neighbors’ threats to the police many time. If this is true, it’s a hate crime

by Anonymousreply 40June 3, 2025 2:49 AM

Joss introduced Tristan as "my new love" at the end of November, 2024. By then he'd been feuding (and exchanging threats) with some of his neighbors for years. Tristan began appearing in some of Jonathan's videos; they'd get high or have breakfast while Tristan was dressed like a unicorn in fuzzy footie pajamas.

In this clip from a few weeks ago, they mentioned shopping for a car. Hours before he died, Jonathan was on Facebook requesting a free ride from Austin to San Antonio. Whoever volunteered to help probably feels very guilty right now, even though this wasn't their fault.

[quote]According to the San Antonio Police Department, officers have responded to Joss' address on Dorsey Drive over 40 times since January 2024, with calls connected to mental health disturbances, disturbance with neighbors, general disturbances, welfare checks and the fire reported in January. Police did not respond to any calls from February 2 to June 1. Neighbors had said he wasn't seen as much on the property after the fire.

by Anonymousreply 60June 3, 2025 5:08 AM

Here's my Texas story. My 1st husband got an assignment in Arlington and as we were going to be there a few months I got a job waiting tables at a Denny's . One sunday I was serving a table full of white haired old church ladies and I overheard those sweet little old ladies saying some of the most racist shit I ever heard about Mexicans . Not much in this life has shocked me but that left me speechless. I of course slung major attitude the rest of their meal (not like they would have tipped anyway) . Few weeks later Im at a grocery store and there was an elderly Mexican gent in front of me and the cashier had attitude written all over her face . When she totals it up the gent pulls out some bills and change and acts like hes handing it to her . He obviously wasnt familiar with our money . She rears back like he spit on her and goes on this tirade about "You people" etc,etc . I snapped at that point, leaned over and hissed in her face "Call the manager NOW " ! then helped the old guy count out the right amount. He was so grateful and sweet . When the manager walked up I relayed every single second of the situation and assured him corporate was my next call . He couldnt apologize fast enough while that cunt stared daggers at me. When my husband was offered a very lucrative position there I told him point blank "I love you and Id go to hell for you but I am NOT staying in Texas "! Havent been back since.

What’s most embarrassing R53 is that you’re too media illiterate to know how the NY post operates. [quote]Gina said the feud took many forms, "Weapons, everything, gun shootings at all times of the hours of the night," Gina said, adding the men didn't shoot at each other "No, just shooting rounds at their own property and stuff. It actually sounds like the killer set a trap.

They were in the process of moving out, and in one of their trips to the home, they found the skull and leash of one of their deceased pets.

That seems to be the bait, which the killer used to keep them on the front lawn (while they were in shock), and that bought him enough time to pull up and shoot the victim.

It was planned and pre-meditated, which would justify 1st Degree Murder AND the Death Penalty in Texas.

Prosecutors need to fight for a charge of 1st Degree Murder.

My neighbor’s Texas story. They are Indian from India. They’ve been in the US since the last 1970’s. The wife wears a traditional sari. Wonderful people who have been so welcoming to and accepting of me and my partner.

Anyway, they were traveling through Texas in the 1980’s. Every time they would stop to find a motel for the evening, the husband, in standard western clothes, would be told the motel was sold out—despite the “vacancy” signs outside. The third or fourth motel they went to, the wife realized her husband was being rebuffed because he looked Mexican. She went with him to the front desk, in her sari, and were immediately given a room.

by Anonymousreply 72June 3, 2025 2:45 PM

Even if it wasn't a homophobic attack (and it's hard to say it definitely wasn't) the reaction from some has been awful. Typical denial from people who refuse to believe hate crimes exist.

And I don't even think it's because those people believe America is so tolerant that homophobic killings would never happen, it's more because there's a deep-seated dislike of gay people that never went away and - if they acknowledge it was a hate crime - they'd feel as though it would warrant their sympathy and they're not willing to do that.

Far easier to say "well, it probably wasn't homophobic" than "killing people for being gay is wrong".

I'm not surprised by some of the stories told about their experiences in Texas. I had some of the most casual homophobic stuff happen to me multiple times on my business trips there.

It's a shit state, made only worse by Texan Republican leaders for the past 15 years.

I know there are Texan gays on this board who say 'oh but the cities are blue and it's not THAT bad' - it's still not good compared to other big cities. I don't feel safe there and there's an underlying feeling of hostility in Texas. I don't even like connecting through DFW.

It's a backwards regressive state that's only buffered by oil and industry due to its size and its disgusting corporate tax rebates and loopholes.

Texas vote in the 2024 Presidential Election:

Donald Trump (Republican): 6,375,376 votes, 56.3% of the vote.

Kamala Harris (Democratic): 4,806,474 votes, 42.4% of the vote.

Jill Stein (Green Party): 82,300 votes, 0.7% of the vote.

Chase Oliver (Libertarian): 68,264 votes, 0.6% of the vote.

I'm actually surprised that so many in Texas voted for Kamala Harris.

I expected the percentage of Republican votes to be in the 60% - 70% range.

by Anonymousreply 76June 3, 2025 3:04 PM

R76 - an almost 60/40 split means there are 50% more Reps than Dems. That's huge.

And it's the TYPE of Republicans - that state has some of the meanest, worst assholes. It's not just suburban moms - they have a much larger, reprehensible kind of Republicans. MAGA drunk on power - loud, racist, homophobic, and dictator-like.

I know not all Texans are like that obviously - but fuck me if I'm gonna take my chances. No I don't think I'll get murdered - but I'm not going to put myself into harm's way and be harassed or put down either.

[Quote] A crazy state for crazy people. Imagine something like this happening in Rhode Island? You can't because it wouldn't.

Texas has a population of 31 million versus Rhode Island which is 1.11 million the likelihood that the murder rate would be the same in both states is a little ridiculous and you do know that in May of this year in Washington DC (pop. 702,250) 20 people were killed. Hate crimes exist everywhere you can't blame a state

[quote]Joss had a breakdown at a King of the Hill event a couple nights before this happened; he was very unstable leading up to it.

I was there. I was seated in the balcony – and since I couldn't really hear what he was saying, I'm glad someone posted that link to the subreddit about it – and the situation was definitely awkward. Just as background: Johnny Hardwick, one of Joss's close friends and the longtime voice of Dale on the show, died a few months back under "suspicious" circumstances. (He was found floating face-up in a bathtub.) Johnny died before his voiceover work for the reboot was finished, so the panel started discussing Toby Huss – a longtime regular on the show, albeit in smaller roles – voicing Dale for all eps after the first six.

I couldn't hear anything, but this description from the subreddit above seems entirely correct:

"He stood up and said he wanted to say a few words about Johnny but he quickly went off the rails. The audience got really quiet, you could feel the tension take over the room. I don't think anyone had any idea where it was going. Finally Jonathon ended with 'I'll just shut up' and he walked down the right aisle toward the stage, took a left in front of the 1st row and walked to the left eventually going up the left aisle."

Yeah, it was THAT weird, and it went on for 3-4 minutes. I know Joss has a history of both substance abuse & mental health challenges, but him being KILLED less than 36 hours later is just weird & sad.

by Anonymousreply 87June 3, 2025 8:07 PM

To clarify a few points:

[quote]Authorities haven't called the house fire arson so far. In fact, Joss himself previously speculated it was either his fault (for having faulty wiring and improperly using a portable propane heater in the house during a cold snap)

I heard back when it happened that it was definitely a portable, propane-powered barbecue – MASSIVE irony noted – that caused the fire. It wasn't arson; Joss was far behind on the bills, and has been having issues for quite some time now.

[quote]For the life of me (or literally for my life) I would not live as a gay couple in any rural part of a red state.

San Antonio is one of the ten largest US cities, not "a rural part," and as per usual, you're glossing over the reality that *every* city of size in Texas is both majority-Democratic and majority-Hispanic.

[quote]This sounds more like a neighborhood dispute gone awry than a hate crime.

Yep. (Plus San Antonio is one of the more gay-friendly cities in America, with its largest per-capita lesbian population.) Joss had had beef with his neighbor for years, even when he was "straight." Even if he starting shouting homophobic bullshit during the fight, it's definitely *not* like he was targeted for being gay.

[quote]Doesn’t matter if the guy was on drugs before, if the killer was spiting homophobic shit and then shoots him, that’s a hate crime.

That may be your opinion, but the pertinent part is whether it's a hate crime as defined by *law*, and since it's Texas, I'd assume nothing of the sort.

[quote]Joss' partner looks female to me. And that being the case, they were basically in a straight relationship, despite their claims of being in a gay relationship. Nothing in this story says to me that either one of them is part of "our" community. Can someone please elaborate, if I'm wrong?

You betcha: you're wrong AND severely warped. How the AF are you *not* aware that trans people can routinely "pass" for cis? And what kind of sick fuck would claim – the day their HUSBAND was murdered – that they're "fake trans"? Seriously?!? This is repulsive & disgusting, and entirely FALSE.

[quote]It actually sounds like the killer set a trap. They were in the process of moving out, and in one of their trips to the home, they found the skull and leash of one of their deceased pets. That seems to be the bait, which the killer used to keep them on the front lawn (while they were in shock), and that bought him enough time to pull up and shoot the victim.

By george, you've solved it! This explains everything!

Oh, wait: except for the fact that THERE IS NO HOUSE SINCE IT FUCKING BURNED DOWN. (See link.) Also, the fact that you can buy a full ACRE for a mere $120K should be a clue that this is in SA's barrio (and one of its worst parts).

They weren't "moving out," and if anything I can't believe they can even *receive* mail at a literal burned-down house. But seriously, Mary, you need to dial down the drama and come up with a better hobby than concocting Especially Suspect Timelines for events you know zilch about.

Tweeker thing, amIrite? Look into whether or not his neighbor's wife had headaches, and whether he was helping her with them, and we may have the reason behind this!

by Anonymousreply 90June 3, 2025 8:34 PM

You bitches REALLY need to get over the Texas angle here. Yes, we know it ranks with Florida as the worst, measured by shittiest residents *and* shittiest politicians. Yes, it has a fuckload of homophobes. No, none of that has a single fucking thing to do with a murder in a working-class Hispanic community, and if you're surprised to hear Latin machismo exists and Hispanics are homophobic, I'll just go ahead & assume you have nary a single fucking clue. The neighbor hated Joss long before he came out as queer, but yes, it's certainly possible Joss's new husband is what finally drove the neighbor over the edge.

Still, this is not "a Texas thing" FFS.

[quote]This type of behavior from the suspect will be normalized by way too many people in this country who think they have the right to Christian-wash their neighborhoods.

I completely agree. And I also think people need to stop spouting unmerited horseshit. You leapt to a ridiculous conclusion solely on the basis of the murder taking place in Texas. No one "Christian-washed" this neighborhood, and it's a stretch to even *call* it one. It's one of the sketchiest parts of San Antonio, south of downtown and one of the areas that ended up with so many abandoned crack houses in the '80s & '90s that the city tore down most of them. The variety of homophobia responsible here is more akin to Latin machismo. This, however...

[quote]They both sound like nightmare neighbors. I'm guessing this must be a working-class area for the cops to let this go on.

...is on the money, plus it's a rough part of SA regardless. The last poster sounded like they were describing some sort of lilywhite Dallas suburb. Are you cunts even aware that SA is barely 20% white? It's the largest Hispanic-majority city in America.

[quote]I had some of the most casual homophobic stuff happen to me multiple times on my business trips there.

Yes, since homophobia is exclusive to Texas. I must've imagined that poor guy murdered in Brooklyn as a "flamer" in 2023 for the heinous crime of vogueing to Beyoncé's new album.

[quote][A] person who attended friday's austin-reunion event told a TV station that joss said his "house burned down because i'm gay."

[quote]They went back to a house burned down by homophobes to get their mail?

Agreed this is odd, especially considering the house has been fully demolished. (Or forwarding his mail. Or needing mail, period, considering it's 2025.)

"According to the San Antonio Police Department, officers have responded to Joss' address on Dorsey Drive over 40 times since January 2024, with calls connected to mental health disturbances, disturbance with neighbors, general disturbances, welfare checks and the fire reported in January. Police did not respond to any calls from February 2 to June 1. Neighbors had said he wasn't seen as much on the property after the fire."

Yeah he was a mentally ill, drug addict. I bet being his neighbor was hell. It's weird no one is mad at him for killing his animals, because he did, by starting the fire. Normally you bitches would be pissed about that.

Maybe all the people using this to make a smug point about Pride month or whatever should also be bundling in a smug point about how the deportations are good actually, since it's getting rid of all those evil, homophobic Hispanics?

by Anonymousreply 92June 3, 2025 9:06 PM

[quote]Are you serious? Who cares about Louann! Dale is dead and that's why it will suck. Louann brings nothing to the show.

Agreed about Luanne – and she won't be back – but Johnny Hardwick acted as Dale on the reboot's first six episodes, and they announced at last week's panel that Toby Huss (one of the show's original voice actors, who's extremely good at his job) would be taking over for Johnny for the remainder of the season (and presumably continuing on if it's renewed).

Btw just to clarify: the original was, like "The Simpsons," not set in a specific time. The reboot is in present day. Bobby's an adult and working as a sushi chef, of all things. Hank & Peggy apparently moved to Saudi Arabia for 15 years, since it's the only place Hank could get a well-paying job working in propane. (A propane-store manager could've reasonably afforded Texas real estate in the '90s, but not today.)

They're keeping most details under wraps, but Luanne apparently moved away long ago – I gather she wouldn't have been in the reboot even if Brittany Murphy hadn't passed – and a single Black man bought their old house. (Unknown yet whether he's a confirmed bachelor.) Dale is apparently having an identity crisis: despite being the show's infamous conspiracy theorist, his conspiracies are now LEFT of center compared to MAGA's worst.

[quote]I don't feel safe there and there's an underlying feeling of hostility in Texas. I don't even like connecting through DFW.

husband's account of multiple shots fired is correct

SAPD identified the suspect as 56-year-old Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja.

He is accused of shooting Joss multiple times before fleeing.

Officers responded to the 200 block of Dorsey Drive just after 7 p.m. for a report of a shooting in progress.

Joss was found near the roadway.

Officers attempted life-saving measures until EMS arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

by Anonymousreply 104June 4, 2025 1:38 PM

Joss said he and his partner had lit a barbecue grill inside the house for warmth and to "make some Abuelita" Mexican hot chocolate earlier Thursday, but were sure they extinguished it before leaving at noon to get lunch and pick up supplies to clean the home. Fire crews reportedly responded to the home in the 200 block of Dorsey Drive around 1 p.m. Thursday. By the time Joss and his partner returned just before 2 p.m., the uninsured residence was a smoldering loss.

"I told them it was my fault," Joss said. "Very easily it could have started because of my stupidity."

"They were sure they extinguished it" = they were on drugs and did not extinguish it.

Joss said he left the house to go eat earlier on Thursday and thought he had turned everything off. He said he had been using a propane heater in the home for warmth. “Mistakes happen, man. And it’s my fault for, I guess, leaving something on,” Joss said. “Or if somebody came in and did something, who knows?”

R109, a previous report indicated that the utilities in Joss's house were cut off. He might have been trying to heat the house with an indoor grill (needless to say, a very bad idea). It sounds like he had some mental health issues.

by Anonymousreply 112June 4, 2025 8:45 PM

Definitely mental health issues but even reasonably healthy and intelligent people have made the mistake of trying to heat their homes with BBQs. There where several CO deaths here during an ice storm when the power was out.

You can do it with windows open but that defeats the purpose when trying to heat. My brother once did a Christmas turkey on his in his garage with the door open. Dry but good. And no asphyxiation.

[quote]So bring me up to speed here: not a hate crime and the guy was crazy?

It was a hate crime in the broader sense that the victim and killer hated each other and spent many years threatening each other's lives. But as others mentioned, that was also going on when Joss was straight and had a wife, all of which was recent.

By the time he married Tristan in February of 2025, the fire had already happened and they'd left the neighborhood. They appear to have only been together for a few months prior to that. And yes, Joss was quite mentally ill (he spoke about it in interviews, one of which is quoted upthread) and the posts calling him a tweaker are correct.

by Anonymousreply 118June 4, 2025 10:26 PM

Joss was a mess and not a hot one; he looked like a very rough 59

by Anonymousreply 119June 4, 2025 10:31 PM

I'm also not buying that it was primarily driven by homophobia or transphobia. The husband looks like a woman with four hairs on her chin. The neighbors may not even have known she identified as a he, but they definitely knew Joss was crazy as fuck.

by Anonymousreply 120June 4, 2025 10:57 PM

if shooter Sigfredo Ceja was indeed saying homophobic slurs as Ceja shot at both Joss and husband Tristan Kern de Gonzales, then there might be enough empirical evidence of hate-crime motivation.

if the motive wasn't because they were both gay, why on earth would Ceja also shoot at Tristan Kern de Gonzales?

There are Reddit posts from over a year ago about Joss acting erratically on livestreams, waving a rifle around, etc. The neighbor could be just as unhinged, of course. The US is full of lunatics with hair trigger tempers and access to weapons.

by Anonymousreply 123June 5, 2025 9:28 AM

But Joss also threatened to have Ceja deported all the time, I read. It sounds like Joss inherited his dad's house, he fucked it up with meth use and then burning it down, and was a nuisance to live next to. All the neighbors killed in the JIMMAYY shooting would be horrified at the lack of manners and class shown here. And if the guy really wanted to kill the wife, why would he not just do it after he shot Joss? This chick is really adding lots of details, such as him "cackling" over the body and calling the wife a gay slur, she forgot to add this; And then he looked at me from under his somberero, pure homophobia in his eyes, and as the hammer on his bandito pistol clicked, he said "aye papi, zees eez MAGA barrio!"

Also, whether or not Joss and Ceja had beef, the whole fucking neighborhood suffered because the wife even admitted that they were purposely loud. "Me and Jonathan would be out there late at night playing the drums, singing, being a nuisance," Kern de Gonzales said. "If you're going to make it hard for us to live here, you ain't going to get no sleep." Yeah, that's classy, meanwhile, the rest of the world have to work in the morning, they don't have that John Redcorn money coming in. I'm just shocked the shooter didn't say, "vaya con dios!"

The woman who recorded the pitchfork shit has spoken out.

“I walked outside and he’s walking up and down with a pitchfork,” Ruano said. “I knew something was going to happen. I wanted to call the police, but he hadn’t done anything.” At times, he can be heard cussing and yelling loudly, seemingly to anyone within earshot. “You’re looking at me for what? I’m walking down the street. I’m rehearsing. I make movies, man,” Joss shouts. Although Joss said he was acting, Ruano said her fear of him was real. She said for decades, her family and others living in the 200 block of Dorsey Street have had tense encounters with him. “He was always yelling, like, at the top of his lungs,” Ruano said. “He would say that all the children on this street were going to die, and that we were all going to go to hell because we’re sinners and God is on his side.” “I think this whole thing happened ‘cause (Ceja Alvarez) was just pushed to his limit,” Ruano said. Despite social media posts to the contrary, police said they have no evidence at this time indicating Joss, who was openly gay, was killed due to his sexual orientation. However, SAPD said Wednesday that the case remains under investigation. “This whole thing was horrible. No one deserves to be shot. But that’s not what this was,” Ruano said, asserting that the shooting was not a hate crime.
