The British taxpayer doesn't fund anyone's hobbies. Sporting organisations pay the equivalent of a salary to athletes so they can focus on their sports and not manage training and competing at events around a full time job. Most of the funding comes from the National Lottery but some comes from government.

Look at Britain's record at the Olympics before the lottery and sports funding was introduced in the late 90s and how it massively improved when the sporting bodies were given an investment with facilities and training and the athletes are given financial support.

And canoeing/kayaking was very popular at the Olympics. One of the breakout stories at Paris last summer were the Australian Fox sisters who both won golds in the slalom, and New Zealand's Lisa Carrington who won her 6th, 7th and 8th gold medals in the sprint, her 4th consecutive gold medal.
