Thom Yorke (Radiohead) BREAKS SILENCE on Gaza!
Statement below:
"I think Netanyahu and his crew of extremists are totally out of control and need to be stopped, and that the international community should put all the pressure it can on them to cease. Their excuse of self-defence has long since worn thin and has been replaced by a transparent desire to take control of Gaza and the West Bank permanently.
I believe this ultra-nationalist administration has hidden itself behind a terrified & grieving people and used them to deflect any criticism, using that fear and grief to further their ultra-nationalist agenda with terrible consequences, as we see now with the horrific blockade of aid to Gaza …
At the same time the unquestioning Free Palestine refrain that surrounds us all does not answer the simple question of why the hostages have still not all been returned? For what possible reason?
Why did Hamas choose the truly horrific acts of October 7th? The answer seems obvious, and I believe Hamas chooses too to hide behind the suffering of its people, in an equally cynical fashion for their own purposes."
He then turned his focus to “social media witch-hunts” saying that pressure on “artists and whoever they feel like that week to make statements etc do very little except heighten tension, fear and oversimplification of what are complex problems”.

That The Guardian and Datalounge thinks this is worthy of a headline is something.
But what we're really desperate to know is whether Thom thinks women can have dicks.

Why are all these activists obsessed with demanding these random celebrities to make political statements on events that have nothing to do with them?

For context (which you would know if you'd read the article): the (former) members of Radiohead have been under pressure to speak out, because a) they have played gigs in Israel in the past and defended it by saying that performing a country is not the same as supporting its government; Yorke's ex-bandmate Jonny Greenwood has an Israeli wife and collaborates with Israeli musician Dudu Tussa, leading to cancellations from several venues in the UK; some of their fans are upset and disappointed by the band's apparent lack of engagement

This is never, ever addressed by the terrorist supporters. Neither is the parading around with the corpses on October 7th, or the post-9/11 celebrations. A complete mystery why that took place.

I think this is actually a fairly nuanced comment on the situation—he makes criticisms of both the Israeli government and Hamas. Irrespective of the conflict's origins, it is true that there have been wrongdoings on both sides. Am I missing something?

If you check the polling, "Netanyahu and his crew of extremists" represent the views of the vast majority of Israelis.
It's a VERY POPULAR murderous genocide and ethnic cleansing with the Israeli population.
They just love it

The latest cease fire was once again voted down by Hamas/Gaza, just like they ended the one in effect on October 6th.
Facts!

This is good context. Additionally, it's worth noting, that Radiohead were (at one time) viewed as highly progressive. Speaking out forcefully for environmental and human rights. For decades they championed the independence rights of Tibetans, for example. But, they remained silent on Palestinians because of their personal ties and professional ties to Israel. This isn't something new with them, but the awful death and destruction of Gaza of the past two years has put it into focus and Thom has even found himself being heckled at his own concerts because, yes, his fanbase is made up of a lot of progressives.
Also, I wouldn't call Jonny his ex bandmate. In fact, they've worked together on projects aside from Radiohead in the last few years. Radiohead haven't split up, but they're certainly on hiatus as Thom and the others pursue their more boring dad rock side projects and solo work.

Yep, agree with him on all of it. And the Free Palestine people don't have any answer as to why the Oct 7 hostages still are being held.

Why so black and white, R22? One can be entirely opposed to Israel's targeting of civilians and ethnic cleansing in Gaza AND believe that all of the remaining Israeli hostages should be freed. I certainly do.
Hamas have brought nothing but misery to the Palestinians, but let's not pretend that Hamas hasn't been incredibly valuable to Netanyahu. Hell, he even helped fund Hamas and keep them in power for the past two decades because he could point to them as this existential threat, maintain his iron grip on power, avoid his own accountability for mass corruption and continue illegal settlements in the West Bank.

They have a particular animus toward him because they've harangued him about Israel since at least 2017 and he's refused to give them what they want.

For their crime of "too reasonable so probably evil Zionist", there's only one thing they can do to exonerate themselves...
Johnny Greenwood is just going to have to gun down his wife.
Anything less would be confirmation that those filthy Jew-lovers dance on the graves of dead Palestinian babies.

On second thought, it can't just be Johnny--it'll have to the whole band, firing squad style. They can film it and feature it in a music video for their next album, 'Here's Another Al Jazeera Article About The Nabka (Do You Know About The Nabka?)'
