Do you know any teens (13-19) who'd be interested in the New York Public Library's Pride event, QUIET QUEERS: PAJAMA PARTY?

Teens take over the SNFL rooftop terrace to celebrate pride with Quiet Queers, a relaxing , low-key and intentional pride themed hangout perfect for teens who would rather stay in than go to a party. The theme this year is Pajama Party/Slumber party, so come in your favorite PJs and bring a stuffed animal for our stuffed animal photobooth! There will be snacks, arts and crafts, board games, a teen created queer playlist, queer book lists and so much more.

More info to come!

This event is FREE and for ages 13–19 only.

Umm, what time does it start?

by Anonymousreply 1May 30, 2025 12:07 PM

It seems unseemly to let 18 and 19 year olds in. But I assume it's very strictly chaperoned.

"Intentional," as opposed to accidental?

by Anonymousreply 3May 30, 2025 12:32 PM

The library system is always crying about budget cuts then they spend their funds on this. Kids can have pajama parties with their friends…at home..for FREE. This is nonsense (and I wholly support libraries and gay rights.)

Even the library is trying to silence us. I WILL NOT BE ERASED!

R4 a lot of LGBT youth have hostile parents, an abusive homelife, could be growing up in a right wing Christian home, etc. Many are even homeless.

Are you even LGBT? Seems pretty shocking that you wouldn't understand or sympathize with those facts, but then again you sound a lot like a right-wing Christian yourself with those talking points.

“ then again you sound a lot like a right-wing Christian yourself with those talking points”

To r6, everyone sounds like a right wing Christian with talking points when saying something disagreeable to r6.

Aww. That’s like the most “cusp of Gen Z / Gen Alpha” social event ever.

by Anonymousreply 8May 30, 2025 1:33 PM

This one sounds like a lot of fuel for the Autism troll.

R6 I’m R4. You’re right of course that LGBT youth don’t always have parents who support them and there should be programs that fill that need. The reason I think this is a waste of library funds is because the only teens who will come to this already have supportive parents, that’s almost a guarantee. I’m not against gay programs at libraries, just think this one is unnecessary. If it’s successful, good for them. I’m not Christian or straight and don’t have kids. I’m an old crank I guess. I get annoyed when books that should be circulating in the NYPL system aren’t available at ALL but they find money for this.

You don't know that and have no evidence to back it up, it's just a "gut feeling" you latch on to because it serves your preconceived bias. There are, indeed, at risk youth who benefit from programs like these. I once volunteered for a program like this. There are LGBT kids from poor families, immigrant families, deeply religious families, or with no family at all. Finding support for those kids is a struggle and programs like these help connect them to a larger sympathetic community as well as to much needed resources.

You got that right.

How much do you imagine this event costs, r4?

by Anonymousreply 12May 30, 2025 2:07 PM

R11. I appreciate your responses; it’s given me a different perspective about it. I’m R4 (the crank)

by Anonymousreply 13May 30, 2025 2:08 PM

This is a law suit or a scandal waiting to happen. I’m sorry but the library shouldn’t host such things. Also, I’m against sleepovers in general.

by Anonymousreply 14May 30, 2025 2:12 PM

R12. The event may not cost much and it probably be worth it. I was just overreacting to this—being a longtime NYPL member who has gotten years of them reaching out for funds because the government is always threatening to cut funding (again very recently.)

I’m old school, I use the library for books and research. I know it’s grown to be much more than that though so I’ll stop my bitching.

by Anonymousreply 15May 30, 2025 2:14 PM

R14. It sounds like a sleepover but I clicked the link; it’s just a slumber themed party from 2-5 pm. That’s a whole different thing. Sounds harmless.

Don't do that! This is Datalounge, after all.
