I had forgotten that she had made this movie with her second husband Barry Hankerson.
Part 2:
What do you think of her acting? I remember her soundtrack doing well, especially SO SAD THE SONG.

Today is her birthday! 81.

I remember when this movie came out. It tried to capitalize on the construction of the Alaska pipeline, which was one of the big stories of the early '70s.
She did a fine job in the film, but it bombed at the box office, and well, that was the beginning and end of her acting career.

Sally Kirkland is in it as well

The James Bond theme she sang is my favorite of all the Bond flicks, even GOLDFINGER by Miss Shirley Bassey.

The Empress of Soul. No one even comes close.
You can keep Aretha.

I saw the movie years ago. Gladys always makes me happy. I hope she's doing well.

She has a great voice, but her catalogue doesn't compare to Diana, Dionne or Aretha's.

Is this Sally in the movie?
Does she play a whore barfly?

What did y’all think about Gladys’s performance? Was it Whitney in THE BODYGUARD level or what?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | May 30, 2025 12:44 PM |
R12 It was better. Whitney was playing a version of herself. Gladys was actually playing a character.

Diana and Dionne are pop singers. I'd put up Gladys's catalogue against Aretha. Aretha had a lot more press and praise. Gladys was always better.

R10 Don't forget Donna!

Lies. Even Gladys wouldn't dare say that her catalog rivals Aretha's Atlantic Records output in the late 60s and early 70s. Aretha had more hits, and her influence on other performers was greater than Gladys's. Even B-Side songs like "Ain't No Way" is as famous as any of Gladys's hits.
And screw that "Empress of Soul" bullshit. No one was calling her that until her fans on the internet came up with that in the early 2000s. Aretha was always called the Queen of Soul or Lady Soul from the get-go.

Aretha's real hits were Natural Woman, Think, Respect, Chain Of Fools, and Till You Come Back To Me - maybe Freeway because I always liked that song too.
Gladys - Midnight Train To Georgia, Heard It Through The Grapevine, Neither One Of Us, Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me, If I Were Your Woman, I've Got To Use My Imagination.
And just for chuckles, let's throw in Try to Remember/The Way We Were.
I actually alive and a teenager in the late 60s/early 70s and went to an urban HS. Gladys was much more popular.
And you're on crack R16, if you think Ain't Now Way was as famous as any of the Gladys Knight songs I listed.
