Ten Foot Tall Catholic Saints On A Public Tax-Funded Building

Spending close to one million bucks to put these giant statues on a police and fire HQ. Non-Catholics are not happy.

There's nothing Catholic about Massachusetts anymore. At this point, it's cultural.

$850,000 seems like a lot of money for something like that. In theory, I agree with the objections but the way they are expressed seems so overwrought and unrealistic. Is a Muslim or Jewish person going to feel excluded because of those statues? In actuality, I like the idea of public buildings having imposing and dramatic features.

To be ecumenical, create statue of Mohammed?

by Anonymousreply 5May 28, 2025 12:24 PM

It’s obviously the wrong thing to do, especially with public funding. If they want retrograde neo-classical statues outside their public building there’s a rich history of symbolism to draw from that a la blind justice that does not refer to a specific religion

Know much about Islam, R5?

I skimmed the thread title missing the word “saints” and thought the statues were, I dunno, the virgin mary or Jesus or something but one of them just looks like a Roman legionnaire (there’s a Saint Florian?) and the other would look the same except he has wings. Still, dumb idea in this day and age.

by Anonymousreply 8May 28, 2025 12:59 PM

Ah, Saint Florian, patron saint of chimney sweeps but also firefighters. Might’ve been some retrofitting there.

They're more homoerotic than Catholic. They're named Michael and Florian, have chiseled abs and pecs, and they're wearing "skirts."

The sculptor has to be gay.

They need a few gorgeous Kuros statues in praise of Apollo and the male form.

R7 doesn't understand humor.
