The second film from the Phillipou brothers after their directorial debut "Talk to Me", it stars Sally Hawkins as a foster mother who is (apparently) trying to resurrect her dead child by means of witchcraft. I thought "Talk to Me" was a pretty good horror film, but this looks much better. Hawkins is a good actress. I plan on seeing it Thursday night.
Sounds cool

I like Sally Hawkins although her Anne Elliot was a bit mousy for me. Rupert Penry Jones was at peak hotness as Captain Wentworth.

Just clone her..

I don’t understand the concept.

I’d reimagine the plot in reverse.

R11 I liked "Talk to Me"--it was pretty unique, I thought. I went and saw this today at a matinee and while it may be a better film objectively, it was not as enjoyable to watch. I did find it suspenseful and disturbing. Hawkins's performance is stellar, and her character is one of the most vile, selfish, deranged human beings I've seen portrayed in a film in a long time. She was absolutely rancid. Just pure evil. Excellent acting on her part.

R6 I first saw Sally Hawkins in Fingersmith and she played a feral and fierce character so I’m disappointed her default mode is mousy. She was great in Happy Go Lucky too.
I absolutely hated her character in The Lost King.

The Philippou brothers published a "watch list" inspired by the film for IMDb, and "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane" was #1. I would've never expected that, but now that I think about it, there are some parallels between Hawkins's sadistic character in this film and Davis's in "Baby Jane". For some reason they also included "Cinderella", "Stuart Little", and "Mousehunt", all films featuring rodents—I'm not sure what this means, but it's funny.

R13 - I watched this because of your comment. Oh boy the finger banging!

R19 I haven’t seen Talk to Me but now that I’ve seen Bring Her Back I plan to.

Talk to Me was good but you can see the artistic growth taking place in Bring Her Back. R19

It premiered on HBO tonight and I just watched it. What a grotesque creep show that is. I couldn't stop watching, never a dull moment.

I absolutely loved this film, and HATED their first film.( Talk To Me)
Sally is fucking Oscar worthy and not even in the conversation.
This was frightening, horrifying, and really moving.
Every actor was perfect. It was the second best horror film I have seen in the last decade, next to the Danish version of Speak No Evil.
Speak No Evil
Bring Her Back
Hereditary
Midsommer
is my list

Bring Her Back is better than Weapons.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | October 5, 2025 7:09 PM |
I watched Weapons last night and Bring Her back tonight. Both were excellent, but Bring Her Back will stay with me much longer, Such an incredible portrayal of grief and the madness it brings. Every performance excellent. Hawkins should at least be nominated if not win. The kid who played Ollie was absolutely brilliant.

Hawkins is great but the Oscars don't normally recognize horror movies

Will the film be recognized in the upcoming Fangoria Chainsaw Awards?

I would love to watch Weapons, but the rental price has to go down. MEANWHILE, it'll be on HBO Max in a month.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | October 6, 2025 4:54 PM |
Holy mind fuck. I just watched this the other day and it is INSANELY INTENSE. I'm surprised this movie wasn't talked about more, especially here and now with all the threads about horror movies this time of year. There were a couple scenes I actually had to look away (the melon scene in particular) and I've seen plenty of horror movies. This was a fantastic film with amazing performances by all.

Sally Hawkins is incredibly talented. I'm still bummed that in 2017 she had all the ingredients to win a well-deserved Oscar (baity, critically acclaimed leading role in the best picture winner) and had the bad luck of competing in the same year as one of the Academy's favorite actors of all time, Frances McDormand.
In a just world, she would walk away with the trophy this year for this superb performance.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | October 7, 2025 4:25 PM |
She was indeed fantastic. Notable too were the young actors playing the kids. The Billy Barratt actor played the role amazingly well. He has a bright future ahead of him.

Just watched it last night. I thought it was kinda boring, actually. What exactly happened to "Oliver" at the end? He was suddenly communicative when the police found him. Did it have anything to do with crossing the threshold?
by Anonymous | reply 37 | October 7, 2025 9:35 PM |
The male actor playing the brother was much better as an actor than the sister. I actually wanted something bad to happen to her for being annoying.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | October 8, 2025 7:34 AM |
R38 in her defense, she's never acted before. Her mother saw an ad looking for a visually impaired girl and she landed the part. I thought she was good but I agree the other performances were stronger. Sally did her own stunts too.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | October 8, 2025 1:00 PM |
R34- I cannot agree more. I thought that this was as good as Hereditary and also more moving and in many ways, more frightening-

The boy eating the wooden counter, OMG, that was so gross. I was horrified but can laugh about it now.
