R4, in the Middle Ages, it was considered that an animal that died under extreme fear or anxiety tasted better. So they would purposefully terrorize animals before killing them.

This was a scene in Black Box, the new Soderbergh film.
Many decades ago there was a film/documentary Mondo Cane with examples of how "bizarre" the world and its cultures are. It had a scene in Hong Kong restaurant where the delicacy was a live monkey, pinned into the middle of the table, where they open its skull and ate its brains while it was still alive. Horrendous.
