I just do not hear him talked about as much as he used to be when I was young (in the 80s).
But he was gay in real life (or at least bi), and so handsome, and well built for his day, and made such an impression in his Hollywood films.

Those bi rumors were in “Hollywood Babylon” which were known for inventing stories.

That’s probably because he’s been dead for 70 years, OP.

Overrated actor. Have you seen Giant! He probably would've lasted as long as his contemporaries, into the early 2000s or so. Doing character work, and maybe a supporting actor Oscar along the way. You really don't hear much about him anymore.

No.
Marilyn Monroe has stuck around because she despite the time she lived in, she still represents beauty, femininity as a performance, exploitation, mental health struggles, and body image that are still so relevant today with women of all ages.
James Dean’s image is stuck in amber and what made him resonate with people has evolved and been reinterpreted and layered so many times through punk and grunge and emo and hip-hop and even MAGA that his original mold feels antique than rebellious today.
He’s like Katherine Hepburn’s pants.

R8 and I didn’t mean Monroe just for women for gay men too.
James Dean doesn’t reflect gayness today.
