The Times Social Q's wants to know: Is It OK to Let Our Teenage Son "Hang Out" in His Room With His Boyfriend?
A reader’s husband accused her of hypocrisy because she wouldn’t permit the same behavior if their son were straight.
Asked Mom to Social Q's: "Our teenage son is gay. He is a junior in high school and has a boyfriend his age. My husband and I allow them to be alone together in my son’s bedroom with the door closed. If he were in a heterosexual relationship, we would say, “No way!” But since pregnancy isn’t a concern, I’m fine with it: It seems like a safe space for them to explore their sexuality. My husband thinks I’m a hypocrite because I wouldn’t allow this if our son were straight. He also finds it “disrespectful” for the boys to have sex under our noses — though we have never heard a sound come from his room. Thoughts?"
My response: If your son can't get pregnant, why is he texting his gym teacher to "Put your babies in my bussy?" WELL????????
Social Q's response follows, but here's the TLDR: let them fuck, as it's a beautiful thing:
"I get that it may be disconcerting to think of your baby becoming sexually active, but he is a young man now. And your conversations with your husband seem way off-base. I would drop the question of hypocrisy: Making hypothetical rules for a hypothetical straight son does not seem productive. And it’s unfair for your husband to label your son “disrespectful” for behavior that he has chosen to allow. Does he want to change the bedroom-door rule or not?
In my view, there are more important issues for you to discuss with your husband — and for both of you to discuss with your son: his emotional readiness for physical intimacy, for instance, and the prevention of sexually transmitted infections. (Pregnancy is not the only issue!) And your comment about his quiet bedroom makes me wonder if you even know whether your son is having sex. If not, it’s time to start talking to him.
Now, I know these conversations can be hideously awkward. But the thing to remember is that they don’t have to be perfect. You need only convey your openness to hearing anything your son has to say and to ask him, in general terms, about his experiences, his safety protocols and his emotional comfort. Stop fussing over make-believe children and start parenting the one you have — and love."

[quote]his emotional readiness for physical intimacy
He's a teenage boy; emotional readiness isn't a factor. Most men don't bring emotions into sex.

These days, parents should be THRILLED if their teenage sons are having sex. Anything that veers them off the path to becoming an incel monster.

Does the incel thing apply to homos? I'm sure there are gay incels, but the frequency with which this happens must be lower than the straight community for several reasons ranging from the fact that young gay boys have to be more socially conscious (to simply survive) to the access to equally-willing peers. That said, yes, I agree that in today's fucked-up world parents should be thrilled when their teenage sons do normal teenage boy things, If we had any form of how-to parent education, it would have to include instruction to monitor that your child is not turning into a MAGAt, err, I mean incel. (And now you know why we do not teach people how to parent, at all.)

It's so much hotter and creates better memories when your parents dont know, and i diidn't perfect silent orgasam at 16 to have it all have been for nothing in a world where parents now get to know. Seriously, my faint early sex memories always involve trying not to get caught by my parents, a couple of rooms away as I'm rapidly becoming a horn dog with my boyfriend and disappointment always ensued on some level...

This is ridiculously stupid of the Times. Two gay teenage boys in a relationship spending time alone in a bedroom are having sex during at least some of that time. Not up for debate.

I don't think Jr H S boys should have sex in the bedroom of one of them when his parents are home. That is 13, 14 years old! I would tell them to wait for high school. And I would be ok if they really need to do it at 12 or 14 but they should wait to be alone in the house. Or they should do it in their treehouse, or in the woods, or the barn, or whatever. It's just a bit too cosy and accepting for 13 and 14 year old teens to fuck in their bedroom while mom and pop are sitting watching TV. Call me old fashioned.

It makes ME think her son is doing his best to ensure the parents DON'T have to know for sure. He's a nicely brought up boy who doesn't want to broadcast that he's having more fun than they are.

R21 I’ve done it, if not a for combination of necessity and slight thrill of doing it in my childhood bedroom in my early 20s. Unfortunately not with a man, but was satisfying at the time.

R21, I did it only at night with someone sleeping over, but my room was on our third floor and we had privacy.
Between ages 15 and 18, I was as discreet as I could be but nothing was coming between me and having as much sex as I could have. I did not offend anyone in the house, unlike my younger brother who loudly deflowered his girlfriend in his room over the room where my parents were sitting. Or my sister climbing the wall to HER third floor room after spending the night with her boyfriend and having my father get a gun because he thought we had a cat burglar.

My friend and I were blowing each other all over the place for years. My room, his room, behind my garage, in the woods behind his house, in the den at his house, etc. I’m amazed we never got caught. It started in 8th grade and continued until the summer after we graduated when I went off to college and he joined the army.
Looking back, surely someone in our families knew. I don’t think we were always very careful.

Talk to him about condoms, PReP and other safer sex methods and take him to a sex ed counselor.
Then get out of the way. Teens are gonna fuck somewhere and it may as well be in the safety of your house and not in the alleyway.

If my parents forbade me to have my boyfriend in my bedroom, I would ask them if they prefer we hang out in a public place like a park or library bathroom. It seems infinitely safer for them to be at home rather than some place they could potentially be arrested or joined by old men trying to get in on twink action. Come on parents...think!

It's ridiculous that a parent's only concern is pregnancy.
Sexually transmitted diseases are an issue, especially and including HIV. Additionally, with so many children whining ANXIETY, it behooves a parent to consider the emotional and psychological issues of engaging in sex as a teen. The question of whether the kid is mature enough to have sex should be considered.
Finally, there are age of consent laws. Consent varies by state, as well as relative ages of the participants. While these parents may not have an issue, the other kid's parents may be homophobic religious nutbags who might be more than happy to press charges for statutory rape.

Can you be liable for statutory rape if you're the same age as the complainant? Rape rape, sure, but statutory?

R40 They vary significantly by state, and most states have “Romeo & Juliet” laws that protect icky shoulder cases like when two 17 year olds are having sex and then one of them turns 18.

R41 I have often wondered about that. I live in California. The age of concent is 18 and there have never been any Romeo & Juliet laws here. Technically, any couple (gay or straight) could suddenly have one party guilty of statutory rape after celebrating their 18th birthday. I've never heard of such a case being prosecuted, though.
The reality is, it would be nearly impossible to prevent two teenage gay boys from having sex. A girl may put a halt to things, but good luck with that if they are both boys. You would literally have to lock them away from each other. That's particularly true if they've already been sexually active. No way that Genie is going back in the bottle!

R42 Gotta love the two 17yo’s who start fucking at just before midnight on the guy’s birthday. He enters perfectly legally. Then at the stroke of midnight, his inserted dick turns into rape just as he shoots his load.
I volunteer to be DA to prosecute that case.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | May 27, 2025 3:45 PM

Depending on the jurisdiction, even if both people are under age, either or both could be charged with statutory rape, especially in places without Romeo and Juliet laws.
While rare, in California since there are no R&J laws, if both guys are 17, both could be charged with statutory since neither is able to consent as minors.
