Question about Prime Membership
My Prime membership is coming up for renewal on Tuesday, and after 10 years of having it, I'm seriously considering canceling it (at least for a while - if I miss it, I can always re-subscribe). The bottom line is: I don't use it all that much for shopping (just dog food) , or streaming (all the movies or TV shows I'm interested in are either for rent / buy).
One of my friends said that if I wait long enough (about 3 months), I will start getting really good offers from Amazon to 'come back', like other subscriptions offer (gyms, cell phones, etc). Does anyone know if that's true or not ? What's been your experience ? Are the 'come back' offers good deals, or is it more like 5% off ?

I cancelled mine and I don't miss it. I only bought random books and at Christmas some family gifts. If you want to cancel do it soon. Don't wait or you'll be stuck. And a word to the wise. Delete all your payment information. You can still order from Amazon and you can still get decent prices and shipping. But really the Prime membership is so expensive it isn't worth it to me. You can rent movies if you want. The thing you will not get is t he free movies and programs Prime offers. But you can usually find them on other streaming sites.

Thanks R1 - the only thing I get is dog food once a month, and at $45 it qualifies for free shipping.
My question - did they email you any offers to renew your subscription ?

They will for their One Medical access…email, and email and then email again.

I use Amazon prime for almost everything. I hate shopping and I know what I want.
Why drive to a store, hassle the parking, dodge criminally underdressed fatties, elbow the fatties through the door, push your basket down aisles feeling like a loser, hoist your crap into the basket, hoist it again on the conveyor belt, hoist into your car, hoist it out at home, hoist it inside... AND THE EXACT SAME THINGS COULD BE ON YOUR DOORSTEP FOR A MINIMAL FEE.

Another option is curbside pickup. Shop online, employees collect your crap and bring it out to you, no charge though I tip.
I am not an invalid btw, and some things I wish I could find in stores and touch the items but those days are gone.

Husband and I both had memberships. He canceled two months ago. I kept it. We were expecting some kind of great deal to get him to resubscribe and then cancel mine. Hasn't happened yet.

I don’t know about Amazon Prime, but this is something that works for the ridiculously overpriced Ultimate tier of Grindr. Subscribe for a month, cancel it, and then usually soon after it expires it’ll offer another month for half the regular price.

I wouldn't dream of canceling. It's made my life so convenient. Just yesterday I bought pj's and thanks to Prime, not only did they deliver them the next day, they came in and dressed me in them.

I have been a shopper on Amazon since the beginning, it was like breathing air….until this past November and the Inaugeration. Now? I’m washing ALL the Tech Bros outta my hair! All by friends have cancelled it too. FUCK Bezos with a cheese grater!

No, OP, it’s not true. Your friend is just assuming based on experiences with other services and companies. Amazon couldn’t care less whether you resubscribe to Prime or not. There will be no discounted offers to retain you when you cancel, nor will those offers come at a later date to court you back.

I think based from my experience, they offer discounted membership about 2-3 times a year. i don't have membership right now. But from time to time, I see these promos when I’m actually browsing the website and not via emails.

I haven’t missed mine. I barely use them now.

I don't pay for Prime and I'm constantly being offered either "one month free!" or $1.99 for a week at checkout. I often accept those offers and even after they lapse I'm offered them again in short order.

I haven't noticed any special offers for Prime. They did bombard me with e mails as the expiration date approached, but then they stopped. I have been Prime free since February and haven't received any solicitations from them. What I do get on Yahoo, is these "articles" about all the great deals Amazon is offering and a link to click on to buy something. Which I ignore. Truthfully, the only thing I have seen is both TV and internet ads for jobs at Amazon. I don't recall in past years that Amazon ever ran job ads. With shopping, I have used the pick up method at the grocery store during COVID and I really liked it. Shopping for groceries on line and then picking them up was a great option. But honestly I do like grocery shopping most of the time. Especially for meat or fresh produce. I'm picky.

I think the reason Amazon may offer me so many promotional offers for Prime is because they can see that I don't order enough to make it worth paying full price for, and also whenever I fill out their survey (each and every time my free or discounted Prime ends) I make it very clear that I'll never join Prime for full price. I've never in my life paid anywhere near full price for it, nor would I.

Thanks everyone for your responses - you've been extremely helpful (or as young DLrs like to say, 'Amazing!') with my decision to cancel today before it auto-renews on Tuesday (and a big thank you to the poster who said about wiping out my 'payment info' ).
When I first joined years ago, I worked at a University and was offered the 'Educator's Price' (I wasn't an educator, I was a library assistant) which was half off at the time (I believe I was charged $59 for the year) - they let me keep renewing at that price for four years. Then I was charged whatever the 'current full price' was after that and I've been paying that for the past six years. I know my subscription ends on Tuesday, as I checked a few months ago and put it on my calendar. I never ever get email reminders about my renewal coming up - the only thing I get is a 'thank you for renewing' email about a week after it auto-renewed.

I know we're all 35 around here, but it might be useful to know that you can get Prime at half price if you're on Medicaid, as well as some other government programs.

R19 Yes, doesn't apply to me.
I just cleared out my payment options (thanks again, R1) and instead of canceling all together, I opted to pause my membership on my expiry date - that way I can start it up again if I choose to in the future without going back to square one (they save my shipping info, contact info, past orders, etc - everything but payment info).
Again, thanks !

OP, you really don't need to pause it. I flat out cancelled it and erased my payment info, and about a month ago I ordered a book from them and OMG, they had the payment information except for the security code, and all my shipping information too. IMO I think a clean break is best but I guess there's no harm in what you did. I wanted them to clearly understand. I'm done.
