Michael Jackson biopic pushed back again by Lionsgate, due to legal 30 year old legal settlement
The movie, directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jackson's real-life nephew in the title role, might not hit theaters until 2026.
Lionsgate featured "Michael" in its 2024 CinemaCon presentation, but didn’t show any footage this year, despite principal photography already being completed in May 2024. The film was scheduled for April 18, 2025, but was then pushed to Oct. 3, 2025, in November. In April, Variety reported "Michael" was unlikely to be released on that day due to the reshoots, adding that it might be split into two movies.
In late January, Puck reported that "Michael" will need to be overhauled during reshoots after lawyers learned of a clause in a settlement agreement between Jackson and one of his accusers.
In 1993, Jackson was accused of sexually abusing 13-year-old Jordan Chandler. The musician, who died in 2009 at age 50, and the Chandler family reached a settlement out of court, reportedly for $25 million. According to Puck’s sources, the settlement specified that the Chandlers could never be mentioned or dramatized in a movie. The outlet reported that John Logan’s script featured the Chandler situation and the agreement was overlooked when the screenplay was previously vetted and approved.

Nobody's going to watch a movie about this freak.

No films about this serial paedophile who raped and destroyed the lives of an untold number of little boys.

I thought no one would watch but MJ on Bway has been a massive hit. I’m sure the movie will be too,
His family has been amazing at making money off him even in death

This movie is going to be absolutely ridiculous. “An American Dream” was good because it ended when he still looked black and normal.
Anything after is going to look like a mess.
He spent the last 20 years of his life doing nothing. Basically what Britney Spears is doing.

I heard that Katherine Jackson gets a big chunk of the MJ royalties and then disperses that money to the unemployed Jacksons. This movie is probably is probably a last-ditch effort to make some more money off of Michael Jackson's legacy before she drops dead and all the money starts going straight to MJ's kids. She's 95.

what r5 said. As much as people say they won't see it, they will in huge numbers. Michael Jackson's life, all these years after his death, is still a trainwreck that people will watch.
Nia Long as Katherine should be interesting. His nephew must be a pretty good actor for Lionsgate to have him carry this movie. His voice is almost identical to Michael's.
r11 the estate has made a gazillion dollars since he died. The Jacksons, especially his remaining siblings, who are all practically seniors themselves at this point, are set.

R1, unfortunately he still has a lot of fans out there. I could see this doing well but I agree with r10. I don't know why they didn't just do a "young Michael" movie and end it after the Thriller era. Then they wouldn't have to worry about sidestepping the abuse allegations

Any movie on the world’s #1 pedophile is cursed. How can they even release it knowing that MJ was a known pedophile? Greedy freaks.

R13, what R11 says is what I have read about MJ’s estate. He did not leave anything to his brothers and sisters. Everything went to his three children; a small portion of the estate’s income went to his mother. Of course, the estate has now made so much money that a huge sum has been paid to Katherine. For most of his life MJ gave money to his mother with the understanding that she would pass it on to his brothers, but he did not want to talk to them.

Why didn't he want to talk to his brothers? Did they give him grief about raping little boys?

r14 we've really already seen that story already with "The Jacksons", which now over 30 years old. Do we really need another puff piece?
I think this is why the existing footage will be split. The last 20 years of his life when he was seen as a total media spectacle is honestly more interesting: the marriage to Lisa Marie (who has now also kicked the bucket), the 30th anniversary special featuring skeleton thin Whitney Houston, dangling Blanket over the hotel balcony, the Martin Bashir era, the 2005 trial, all a huge trainwreck worthy of the big screen!

R10 That’s not true. Yall are misremembering history. I notice it happens to people when they age. Michael Jackson released an album 9 years before he died. He realized 3 albums in the 90s, all hits. Even the 2001 album was a hit, just less so by MJ standards. He also toured, inconsistently, during that time period. Are yall forgetting he died in 2009 at the age of 50?

Not to mention the nudity required to portray her steamy nights of passion with Michael.

It was interesting how he could not get arrested (heh) before his death. He was persona non grata, his fans were a bunch of freaks, his music was corny.
But in his death he was reclaimed by the black community. I think the only white people of note at his memorial were Brooke Shields and John Mayer.

^ I remember Joan Rivers calling out Brooke for wanting nothing to do with him in his later years, then making a big deal about his death
Michael described Brooke as his "girlfriend" but Brooke said they NEVER had sex (of course)

r8 after Princess Diana set the standard for this type of thing, it really wasn't that bizarre. He was the still the most famous person alive in 2009.
Here on Datalounge, Michael Jackson and the saga surrounding his death and surviving children consumed the site. The paywall feature just started and DL was locked up for weeks. I remember we were still in the horrible Great Recession that summer; Im sure this was used as a distraction for many people.

He was very famous but I wouldn't call him the most famous person alive in 2009. He probably had the same level of fame as Paul McCartney, Springsteen, Madonna and many other big A-listers.
