French cinema - did streaming kill off international interest

I saw so many French movies at the cinema since the late 90s to late 10s, often seeing a film based on the director or actor and knowing very little about the film. Anything with Juliette Binoche, Marion Cotillard, Audrey Tautou, Isabelle Huppert,

With the exception of Elle and Anatomy Of A Fall I can't think of any French films that have crossed over in the way they regularly were 20 years ago or even 10 years ago. Emelia Perez is technically French but let's not talk about that aberration.

Do I need to change my VPN to France and log in to Netflix to see what I'm missing?

I think so, OP.

There is an awfully large amount of terrible French TV straight to streaming as well.

Speaking personally, two of my favourite local art house cinemas have closed.

I think some of it is that the already niche market for international cinema is increasingly crowded by celebrated auteurs from Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East, which is great.

Two French films that I’ve seen in theaters this year that I really liked: WHEN FALL IS COMING, directed by the always reliable Francois Ozon, and a great dark comedy thriller called MISERICORDIA, directed by Alain Guiraudie of STRANGER BY THE LAKE.

It always seemed a bit retarded. I like Italian and German cinema but every French movie I’ve ever watched ends up being unintentionally hilarious

Every single one R5? You seem a bit retarded.
