I am an In-N-Out fan.
What is your favorite fast-food chain?
by Anonymous | reply 99 | May 27, 2025 3:55 PM |
Culver's.

Del Taco. Taco Bell can't touch it.

In-N-Out & Culver’s are my #1 at pretty much a tie. A gap, then Shake Shack. Another gap, then Whataburger.

Five Guys for burgers. Firehouse for subs.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | May 24, 2025 6:16 PM |
I just don't eat fast food, and haven't for decades.
On the other hand, I'm not one of those DLers who boasts I eat nothing but wheat germ, kale, and bean sprouts.
There seems to be no in-between on this forum, though I actually think most gay men actually are somewhere in the in-between zone.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | May 24, 2025 6:20 PM |
R10 - I think there needs to be a distinction between fast food and convenience food/ready-made. Lot of people buy convenience food that isn't a fast food chain. If that makes sense
by Anonymous | reply 11 | May 24, 2025 6:50 PM |
A meal at Five Guys is half my car payment. Way overpriced.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | May 24, 2025 8:31 PM |
Wendy's. Only because you can get a salad with broiled chicken and a wrap with broiled chicken. I use the app it's my favorite f*** I don't want to cook meal.

R12 Not only that, but the quality seems to have slipped. I have been to a few Five Guys in Europe (France, Germany, Spain…) and left almost wishing I had gone to McDonalds.

McDonalds. I love everything on the menu. I liked Taco Bell until their prices became ridiculous. And to add insult to injury, they got rid of the caramel apple empanada. It was a thing of glory.

In-n-Out!

by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 25, 2025 2:24 AM |
The only Taco Bell product that I really loved was that burrito with Fritos in it. Pity they won't make it a permanent menu item. Everything else is mediocre and wildly overpriced.

Slop fest
by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 25, 2025 3:12 AM |
In-n-Out, as a rare treat. Double Double animal style, animal style fries, and several yellow chilis. Bliss.
All due respect to Shake Shack -- they're good, but I've only been once and wasn't impressed enough to make a return visit. Something about their burger was too sweet for me. It may have been the potato bun that put it over the top on the sweet meter. Their fries are better than In-n-Out, though. There may be something to frozen potatoes that makes them fry better. For all the credit In-n-Out deserves for using fresh potatoes, they just don't fry as well or taste as good.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | May 25, 2025 3:13 AM |
I think it’s only in the SW but an actual Mexican fast food chain called, “El Pollo Loco”. Incredible food that makes US fast food look like canned pet food.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | May 25, 2025 3:16 AM |
Shake Shack is the antithesis of In & Out. They really go out of their way to make their food as greasy and processed as possible.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | May 25, 2025 3:46 AM |
Burger King. Love them Whoppers.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | May 25, 2025 3:51 AM |
With all the complaints about the fries, why hasn't In N Out done anything to improve them?
by Anonymous | reply 31 | May 25, 2025 6:22 AM |
Haven’t had fast food for months.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | May 25, 2025 6:41 AM |
Big chain fast food is an absolute last resort for me, and always at someone else's suggestion. It's never an idea that pops into my mind. If I'm with someone who says "I'm starving, let's go in here and I will grab something quick," I'll tag along and 95% of the time have nothing, maybe a soda or a small serving of fries or some side
I won't eat at McDonald's because I never liked it from childhood. It tastes bad and is the embodiment in my mind of everything bad about fast food. It's not that it may be bad for me, I'm not some kind of food crusader, I just don't like it
There are a few exceptions. Shake Shack, for example, maybe 5 or 6 times. It seems a cut above the usual quality of a fast-food chain. I've eaten at Five Guys a handful of times and it's okay in a pinch or as a quick option in an unfamiliar place. I've been in places where there was nothing but a Subway or a Burger King and eaten one or the other because it might be hours before I had the opportunity of anything else. But in the last five years, I doubt I've been in any fast food chain more than once a year to eat anything.
It's the last option i think of when there's no other, I just don't like them and it's easy for me to say I'll wait until o find something i want to eat. I'm not a food or a nutritional snob, I just don't like big chain fast food. The same way I would never order a Pizza Hut pizza.
Mostly though, it's very easily
by Anonymous | reply 33 | May 25, 2025 6:49 AM |
I think they lack incentive because the burgers are very good, r31. It's not like the fries are completely repulsive.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | May 25, 2025 6:54 AM |
In N Out is owned by a major wingnut, as is Chic-Fil-A. Boycott.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | May 25, 2025 7:52 AM |
I said this in the recent McDonald's thread but where I live, Jack In The Box does all the things McD used to do well - cheaper options for small sandwiches and breakfast items, and breakfast all day.
I mostly only do an occasional fast food for breakfast items or an occasional order of fries. I have GI issues and cannot do burgers or chicken any more, alas.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | May 25, 2025 7:59 AM |
R28 - agree with you that El Pollo Loco is very good, although not a lot of locations in the US.
I just find their menu to be very limited. But you can taste the freshness. It's a huge step up - some stuff has to come pre-made, but it tastes like it was made from fresh ingredients.
I can't think of another fast-food chain that comes close. And shut it, In-n-Out fanatics - yes, they are fresh not frozen burgers, but it's not the same. And considering their fries are made fresh, they fail miserably on what is one of THE most important side for a burger. When you only make 3 things and only 2 are good, you need to re-evaluate.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | May 25, 2025 3:44 PM |
One double double fills me up just fine. No need for fries,
by Anonymous | reply 38 | May 25, 2025 4:30 PM |
I don't eat food at or from fast-food chains.
But I understand the wider doors reinforced rest room toilets at the establishments have made life easier for many DLers, every single day.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | May 25, 2025 5:27 PM |
Even if you're out on the middle of nowhere and there are no other options?
by Anonymous | reply 40 | May 25, 2025 7:09 PM |
I haven't been in or eaten from a McDonald's for 30+ years. I just hated the brand from early in life when I lived in the US. I live in Europe now and while you can certainly find fast food places, (and popular American brands McDonald's and Burger King), but you find them in cities. In "the middle of nowhere" the choice is a highway roadside stop that may have two or three local food concessions, a full grocery store, gasoline stations, a bakery or two...and the efficiency and quality is very high. The alternative is to stop in a small town and eat at a bar or restaurant. The roads and highways are not lines with unending strip malls and housing developments and fast food joints.

Just the smell of McDonald's "food" makes me want to shit. I don't know why people would eat there when BK is available. I used to eat at Wendy's all the time a while back ago. They had the best salad bar ever presented to the public. I swear I would pile on enough bacos to equal half a pig. Haven't been in one for years. They probably don't even offer it anymore.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | May 26, 2025 1:36 AM |
Funny. I think BK is the solid last rung on the fast food chain. Lukewarm food always overhead or microwaved. Just gross.
I think a Big Mac is one of the best American inventions ever.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | May 26, 2025 2:19 PM |

Chick fil A has really done a lot to move past the anti-gay stuff, but it’s a lesson in how these reputations stick.
Regardless, the chicken is just meh at best. I don’t have any difficulty in not eating there, and certainly don’t understand the cult like following they have. (Ditto for Canes.)
I will say that the Chick fil A’s here in CA are nowhere near as busy as the ones in TN and NC where I lived for a time. Near me is a CFA and In n Out right next to each other on the same lot. CFA has this elaborate drive thru lane setup that spans the parking lot. Yet it’s rare I see more than maybe 4 cars total in the DT. Meanwhile, the In n Out line seems to go on forever at all hours of the day.

I like finding local non chain fast food. In my area, we've had around 6 Taco Bell go out of business, and each time the space is taken over by a Mexican family, and they're all quite good. I go to a local burger place that's fantastic, they use fresh ground brisket, they've modeled their menu after Five Guys, but they do a better job.

by Anonymous | reply 84 | May 27, 2025 3:12 AM |
In my youth, Chick-fil-A was in mall food courts next to the Orange Julius and I always got both together. I haven’t eaten at one in decades.
Pollo Loco tastes pretty good but it’s expensive and the chickens are the size of pigeons these days.
In-N-Out makes serviceable burgers at reasonable prices, but if you don’t eat their fries hot, they’re terrible.
When I’m away from home, I eat McDonald’s because it tastes consistent at any store. My Filet-o-Fish is my favorite fast food sandwich. During Lent, I treat myself every Friday. Otherwise, $6.99 for a filet is robbery. I also like Quarter Pounders with cheese.
Fried chicken? Popeyes no question is the best. KFC original recipe is nostalgic to me, but way too salty. Church’s and Famous Recipe are not bad, but they never seem to have anything ready when I go there.
Call me weird, but occasionally I’ll get something from others just to mix it up. Wendy’s burgers are decent. Jack’s and Carls/Hardees are okay. Burger King’s fries are very good when they hot and salted and sometimes I like a plain Whopper.
Something about Taco Bell’s ground meat appeals to my taste buds and I love a Chalupa Supreme once in a while. Their beans are flavorless, however, so most of their burritos and the Mexican pizza taste bland, Del Taco’s queso loaded nachos no beans and extra “taco meat” are divine.

I would reluctantly have to say In-N-Out, but mostly because of that uniform they have to wear (60s-vintage, all-white, ridiculous little hat). There's always at least one young guy who looks pornworthy in that uniform, like he's a sailor on leave.
I can't eat at Five Guys because the loud music drives me out of the place.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | May 27, 2025 4:25 AM |
Can't eat Culver's, Panda Express or Chipotle anymore. The occasional Popeye's red beans and rice.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | May 27, 2025 4:38 AM |
Sonic, though I guess it’s only in the South. Their burger tastes so burgery. I’m excited to try their new smash burger. They have good crunchy crinkle fries and they sell them with chili, divine. I had good chili’s hood memories of Rally’s and their seasoned fries but their burgers are boring. The bun is too thick and chewy. I don’t remember it being like that. Popeyes is good of course. I love their red beans and mashed potatoes. In Paris there was one across from my hotel and I was dejected to find they don’t do those sides over there. I like Wendy’s too, their meat has a nice moistness but their fries always taste like burnt oil to me. Burger Kings fries are the absolute worst. Mealy. Their burger tastes interesting. But it’s dry. Really I think my homemade burgers best them all. I do it smash burger style with a Hawaiian sweet bun and Kraft cheese, ketchup, pickles and onions. Love those crispy burnt bits on the meat.

I like burger joints that actually cook each beef patty to order. As in from the grill directly to the (fresh, not held) bun. This includes In-n-Out, Shake Shack, Culver’s, Cookout, Five Guys, Whataburger, etc. Chances are, you’ll wait longer but it’s worth it.
Chains that “hold till sold” are the ones I avoid. Where they keep cooked patties in “drawers” and the employees couldn’t care less how long they stay there. Yuck.
