Thrifting sport coats

Has anyone done this successfully? I’ve eBayed a couple and they have all been . . . fragrant. Bad luck? Or is this like buying used shoes?

Go to a thrift store and do a smell test, OP.

You need to go to the charity shops etc, in person.

Yes, I’ve got great ones. Including dark green suede!

In college I found a beautiful deep green and black houndstooth check cashmere Americana, a subtle dark on dark small check, very nicely cut, and in perfect condition. From the early 1960s I would say. I wore the hell out of it off and on for 30 years until the lining went (and was replaced) and then a few years later the outer edges of the cuffs began to fray a little and it was time to part with it. It was my favorite ever, and amazingly sturdy.

dont buy used clothes on the internet. It's as easy as that. The internet if filled with desperate people trying to sell crap. If you want to collected used attire, you have to do the work and go to used clothing shops. Its the only way to see, feels and smell what it is.

Try Etsy and Poshmark. Etsy is really good for vintage. Poshmark buyers and sellers are “odor” nazis - buyers are furious if anything has an odor. Sellers are scared to death someone might open a case against them so they move heaven and earth not to leave musty odor of scented detergent odor.

I need for the piano bar, shut up.

“The vintage marketplace used to be largely offline. Knowledge was gate-kept and sourcing required free time and a sense of adventure. It’s gone supernova through a tech-led revolution in access‚ both to information and inventory, thanks to the flywheel forces of TikTok and Depop.”

I mean, I love the idea of thrifting locally, but around here the best I would ever do is a pissy Oxxford suit from 1992.

im just sharing my experience. thrifting from amateurs selling on auction sites is a grim experience. they are all desperate and ignorant about what they have, and dishonest because they need MONEY. Thrifting from resellers ruins the fun of thrifting, but you might trust the product. Still you are buying something USED that you have not touched and smelled. and clothes change in size after someone has worn them. So there is ZERO guarantee the item will fit you.

It’s rough. The Poshmark thing sounds like good advice.

A lot of people are very good at reselling. They are talented and know what they are doing. A lot of costumers from theaters that have closed or have sources at estate sales and movie studio costume liquidation curate beautiful collections. Jobs in the arts especially with AI are really diminishing. With rent in LA vintage shops are closing left and right. So the internet is the way to stay afloat. Not always a 24 year old with a nose ring and tattoo selling SHEIN. just make sure to ask questions - “Does this coat have an odor - my husband has allergies?” - They will respond to you and if they don’t - don’t buy it. Also make sure all of the measurements are not only included but there are photos of the jacket and measuring tape. If it is not on the listing - don’t buy it. ….. There are some talented resellers out there and there are some real clunks. At most thrift stores these days the good vintage stuff is plucked out before it hits the racks.

OP eBay is not a verb.

Everything But The House (EBTH). Bought an Armani black corduroy sport coat with original packaging, never worn. It’s a beauty, I get a lot of compliments on it, fits like a glove and was around $30.00. It’s the summer/fall sport coat I keep in my office.
