Social Scientists: "Trump Voters Are Racists; Don't Bother Trying to Win Them Over"
Building on decades of scholarship about the lure of authoritarianism and their own analysis of American voting psychology in 2012 and 2016, the social scientists make an argument that some may find offensive and others unsurprising. It goes something like this: Trump’s biggest supporters are motivated by bigotry and want him to hurt the people they dislike.
“75% of Trump’s voters supported him enthusiastically, mainly because they shared his prejudices, not because they were hurting economically.”
According to PRRI’s Feb. 28-March 20 survey of more than 5,000 U.S. adults, majorities of Americans disapproved of Trump’s job performance (54%) and viewed him as a dangerous dictator (52%), yet only a sliver of Trump voters (7%) regretted casting a ballot for him. Even fewer Harris voters (2%) regretted their vote. Remorse was expressed more by those who did not vote in the 2024 presidential election (31%) and voters who supported a third-party candidate (14%). Smith said [bold]it’s these voters the Democrats should concentrate on,[/bold] and that his research showed that even “milder” Trump voters hew “far closer to MAGA Republicans than they are to Democrats. In my opinion, millions of potential voters stayed away from the polls because they didn’t believe that Democratic centrism represents a genuine and progressive alternative,” he said in a follow-up email. “If that’s true, then [bold]trying again — with an even more centrist approach — is a recipe for yet another failure.”[/bold]

I agree with a a lot of this BUT Trump hit the wall with white voters. In 2024, he made his biggest gain with Latino and even black voters. And Trump won’t be running in 2028 so dynamics will be different.

by Anonymousreply 1May 22, 2025 10:45 AM

Bigotry and greed.

We will see if they survive the tax cut for billionaires in 2025.

by Anonymousreply 4May 22, 2025 10:56 AM

r3, and we are seeing the Klan/Heritage Budget for the next ten years.

Can't wait until Warren is in charge of the Senate Budget Committee.

by Anonymousreply 5May 22, 2025 10:56 AM

R1 not the ones who left the democratic base to vote for Trump not so much because of Trump but because the Democratic Party looked feminine, woke, and weak. Deny this as untrue if you want but this is how the party is seen by many Democrats.

.

by Anonymousreply 6May 22, 2025 10:57 AM

R1 is right. A stat that has been overlooked is that the percentage of white male voters actually increased for Democrats in 2024. Only by 3% but it’s worth paying attention to. There aren’t any more racist white voters for the GOP to find at this point, that is why they spent 2024 laser focusing in on very specific small pockets of minority voters in swing states that they thought they could either flip to vote based on a single issue, or convince not to vote at all.

by Anonymousreply 7May 22, 2025 11:09 AM

Vote under way for big beautiful bill.

by Anonymousreply 8May 22, 2025 11:11 AM

Trump in 24 made bigger gains in diverse urban areas than he did in white rural areas. It’s not all racism. Midterms are different though and Dems should do well. Lots of Trump voters only turn out for him.

by Anonymousreply 9May 22, 2025 11:19 AM

Agreed, on all counts.

A majority of Republican voters fit the description of wanting Trump to hurt some group they dislike. It's an enlargement upon Lyndon Johnson's much repeated explanation, "If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket..."

They are too stupid to notice they are being lied to and fleeced, they just want to feel good about being racist, anti-immigration, anti-gay, anti-liberal, pick one of a score of people or causes they hate. They want to see their enemies dealt a hard hand, roughed up, shipped off. That's their measure of having a hand in democracy.

And agreed the Democrats have to focus on obscure candidates with ideas and plans for a future, and only secondarily for "well at least we're not Republicans."

by Anonymousreply 10May 22, 2025 11:23 AM

Like, duh.

by Anonymousreply 11May 22, 2025 11:26 AM

Klan grannies btfo, but this won’t convince them that all the Democrats need to win is to pretend to be Republicans and stiff the working class for the fourth election cycle in a row.

by Anonymousreply 12May 22, 2025 11:43 AM

When will Democrats admit that they've turned racist against whites and sexist against men?

If you discriminate against people because of their skin color or sex, it's racist/sexist.

But according to them, you can't possibly be racist against whites nor sexist against men.

What bullshit!

by Anonymousreply 13May 22, 2025 11:46 AM

I am so old I remember when working class = democratic party voter. Some would say the Democratic Party exchanged work for woke. Not me of course but many would.

by Anonymousreply 14May 22, 2025 11:48 AM

Obama 2008 was probably as good as it gets. Unusually charismatic and telegenic Dem nominee, a weak GOP nominee, and an eight year GOP incumbent we’d been tiring of — all while the US economy was imploding.

by Anonymousreply 15May 22, 2025 11:50 AM

Not only can't you reason with them, they'll stalk you on your own social media site and bombard you with their bullshit talking points as though if you hear the word woke often enough it'll turn you into an asshole like them.

by Anonymousreply 16May 22, 2025 12:11 PM

Of course we all know this.

It’s a white supremacy cult.

It’s so disingenuous when commenters on TV say stuff like “Why did Trump’s voters vote for him?”

by Anonymousreply 17May 22, 2025 12:30 PM
In 2024, he made his biggest gain with Latino and even black voters.

While that’s the standard line in the media, one cannot make any such confusions when 18 million voters chose not to cast a ballot. Whatever “gains” one sees is skewed by the fact that a huge portion of those who voted for Biden in 2020 didn’t show up

by Anonymousreply 18May 22, 2025 12:32 PM
When will Democrats admit that they've turned racist against whites and sexist against men? If you discriminate against people because of their skin color or sex, it's racist/sexist. But according to them, you can't possibly be racist against whites nor sexist against men.

Um, you can’t make that conclusion. In the case of Trump, his voters actually stated that’s why they voted for him. No where did Dems ever state they voted for KH because they hated white people.

by Anonymousreply 19May 22, 2025 12:33 PM
When will Democrats admit that they've turned racist against whites and sexist against men?

White men have gotten this country into a complete economic and social mess. It makes sense to hate them

by Anonymousreply 20May 22, 2025 12:34 PM

I think they were literal gains, r18, as in more blacks and Latinos voted for Trump than in 2016 and 2020.

by Anonymousreply 21May 22, 2025 12:36 PM

Men are always the problem .

by Anonymousreply 22May 22, 2025 12:36 PM

Sociology lol. As someone said above, Democrats are racist towards whites. They have animosity and hatred towards whites, and their main aim is to depopulate America of white people. It is very apparent from Chuck Schumer's great replacement theory etc.

by Anonymousreply 23May 22, 2025 12:37 PM

I just made the mistake of reading the comments section under a People magazine article about the meeting with the South African President where trump acted like such a fucking embarrassing fool.

The racism that abounded was truly disheartening.

Fans of the current administration are just flat-out racist, or at the very least willing to accept racism in order to get some kind of financial gain.

Just sad.

by Anonymousreply 24May 22, 2025 1:00 PM

This country is not in an economic or social mess. There are econimic and social problems but unemployment is low. Socially, while I wasn't a fan of BLM, the US has made great progress in fighting racism. I think we're in a post racism era. There were frequest posts here that because of demographic changes the US as it got less white would get more progressive. Yeah, right. Because all people of color share one hive mind. Talk about a racist idea.

by Anonymousreply 25May 22, 2025 1:15 PM

...economic..

by Anonymousreply 26May 22, 2025 1:16 PM

Some of you interpret a strive for racial equality as racism against whites.

by Anonymousreply 27May 22, 2025 1:23 PM

Plans to free Derek Chauvin as two J6 pardoned rioters had a lovely tour of the White House.

by Anonymousreply 28May 22, 2025 1:29 PM

Democrats are now the party of making a saint and statues out of a drug dealing lowlife criminal, throwing tantrum over a notorious gang member being sent back to his own home country of which he's a citizen of, empathizing with the cause of a radical terrorist group, validating people with a case of dysphoria to be normal and what else? Does DataLounge even care to actually know why younger generation men lean more towards right now compared to the women? Why so many Latino men voted for him? Nobody has turned a prolific identity politics hustler as much as the Democrat party. Just look at that recent Dem representative's contempt when talking about how the party is looking for a "safe White boy" for the next candidate. And remember Joe Biden proudly professing, "If you don't vote for me, you ain't Black!"? Or how about Kamala Harris who, let's face it, got picked as VP because Biden needed someone who was not a man and who was not White. It wasn't about merit (and charm in this case) of the candidate. It's all posturing. They are OBSESSED with Identity politics, pandering and appearing sanctimonious. And they're digging the hole even deeper as time passes.

Like the person (you) who RUNS to DL to post threads about crimes committed by black people?

by Anonymousreply 31May 22, 2025 2:40 PM

r31 Has anyone ever freaked out over seeing Morgan Freeman in a movie? or Lawrence Fishburne.? Not really. The negative reaction to those cases of black actors being hired to play a historically white person is just that: a reaction. But it's reaction to the pandering to identity politics that I mentioned in my post.
post threads about crimes committed by black people? I could post about other groups too. by Anonymousreply 34May 22, 2025 2:55 PM

Right. So the answer to a country that is moving right is to present candidates who are perched on the far left of the spectrum. Sure.

That's what Obama did, right? Obama got 53% of the vote by positioning himself as a radical leftist.

Oh, wait.

by Anonymousreply 35May 22, 2025 2:59 PM

Chop chop.

by Anonymousreply 44May 22, 2025 3:58 PM

r38 But that's the Republican party. Isn't the narrative that they are the hateful, ignorant and racist party? So, why be surprised that they elected someone like Trump? Democrats like to pose as the sanctimonious, moral and ethical party. So, stick to your principles and may be... don't make a saint out of a guy who once robbed a pregnant woman at gunpoint next time.

This isn’t anything we all didn’t already know.

However, for social scientists to have data and publish said data, well, that’s gonna cause some screaming.

Those kkkunts still want everyone to think they’re not a bunch of racist pricks. Data shows they ARE.

by Anonymousreply 47May 22, 2025 4:04 PM

R35 thinks it's still 2008.

by Anonymousreply 48May 22, 2025 4:07 PM

White people are mad they are losing numbers and power and Trump spoke directly you to them.

He’s deporting brown immigrants and importing white South Africans.

by Anonymousreply 49May 22, 2025 4:10 PM

I know a great many people who voted for Trump that would never think of themselves as racists. Some of them are excellent humans that I would let watch my children or dog. Others are stupid, but they were stupid long before Trump. The problem I see is that there is a generational shift. Some of us, baby boomers and their offspring, are shocked and appalled by the way the culture has gone so female. Let me explain: for many " #metoo" and woke sounded like condemnation of our beliefs about manhood, and what American history shows as the truth not the hate of white men. " #Metoo" seemed like a cry of witch-instead of standing up to men as their equals today girls want to harm their lives because they may have commented on their dress-just like the boys-cowardly and stupid .If you don't like trans people you are wrong and a bigot. But I will state here and now: part of it is a fad. There is no room for free thought. Meanwhile we wondered what happened to the feminist movement- they were suppose to raise "better" sons. But it appears that they have raised isolated, immature, cowardly boys who are so trapped in their mother's basement by video games, porn, and poor education that they see Trump as a real man, and the Democrats only putting up a dying , sick old man, and an inexperienced women who couldn't say what she would do different from him. So for many it wasn't I want Trump- it's I didn't have a choice so I voted for Trump. Lazy yes. But last year's election was a sham. Now the Democrats are worried. They should be. They were irresponsible, and obtuse about their candidates.

by Anonymousreply 50May 22, 2025 4:23 PM

r46 You didn't even respond to my main point from that post lol.
stick to facts

I did. You don't get to be morally superior by crying tears for a man who robs pregnant women.

by Anonymousreply 51May 22, 2025 4:23 PM

Social scientists? Oh, yeah, they're objective.

What is becoming increasingly obvious is that the Biden administration and campaign were a farce and catastrophe. The voters saw this and voted accordingly.

by Anonymousreply 52May 22, 2025 4:31 PM

R51, I can't answer questions about why you adhere misconceptions. Stick to facts. I never defended any criminals, much less cried over him. And no one canonized him. That's your slant, your attempt at cleverness. Your attempt to justify racism among republicans.

But republicans did elect a convicted felon. Fact.

by Anonymousreply 53May 22, 2025 4:31 PM

"The culture is too female" is straight up right wing propaganda. Maybe you and your friends aren't racist (lofuckingl, okbuddy) but you are clearly misogynist and indoctrinated to a particularly regressive world view.

You are also not remotely oppressed or victimized because people different from you, yes, "more female" than you, have rights and freedoms now. This same mindset and these very same people are almost always homophobic and opposed to any gay rights, too, so great company you're placing youself in there,

It doesn't matter how masc or "straight acting," you are, it doesn't matter how many flannel shirts you own, THEY HATE YOU, TOO. Yes, even if you are deeply closeted and compliant with every facet of masculinity that these insecure weirdos always police and talk about, THEY HATE YOUR GAY ASS, TOO.

Agreed! But when I see the same posters replying repeatedly and knowledgeably to the "Katharine Hepburn v. Meryl Streep" thread, I have to assume that they are.

*Some* of these posts are from homophobic interlopers, trolls and bots. But definitely not all. I've also seen these views expressed by gay men irl.

That scene in the white house with President Ramaphosa was absurdist hypocrisy. There is an audience for this foolishness in Trump's electorate, I don't know who they are but I sincerely hope they are jobless, broke and starving to death.

I don't recall Ronald Reagan lecturing P. W. Botha about the evils of apartheid.

R60, Ronald Reagan openly supported apartheid. He vetoed the bill that would have brought sanctions but Congress overrode his veto. He was a known racist, there's much evidence of that. He launched his 1980 campaign from the site of a civil rights era massacre (Philadelphia, Mississippi) and is on tape making racist comments about African leaders at the UN.

by Anonymousreply 63May 22, 2025 5:56 PM
But it's reaction to the pandering to identity politics that I mentioned in my post.

Pure 100% gaslighting. According to your narrative, only people who aren’t rightwing engage in identity politics. When rightwingers engage in identity politics, it’s not identity politics at all, it’s “just a reaction.”

Sure buddy.

All you MAGAs are is balls of identity politics. It’s all us vs them with you. And you love Trump because he shamelessly panders it to get your support.

And as usual you accuse and condemn others for something you’re completely guilty of yourself.

by Anonymousreply 64May 22, 2025 6:14 PM

IMHO, many men of color (and some women as well) believe the man should be the head of the household, and women should be home cooking and cleaning and raisin' babies. If you want to know how I know that, I was a fully patched member of a predominantly Latino motorcycle riding club for six years until I got tired of their attitude towards women. When I was a member, we had chapter events every single weekend where whole families participated (women did all the cooking except for killing and gutting the pig), so suffice it to say I was bathed in Latin culture. And even though they patched me in, they weren't crazy about having a white woman around who rode more, better, and longer than they did.

I would venture to guess that at least half of the reason those groups of men (and some of the women) voted for Trump because they just plain did not want a woman in charge -- period.

Plus Kamala was married to a white man. I also spent close to ten years living in a majority Black city (and not in the "gay ghetto"), and while it was OK in the Black community (although frowned upon) for a Black man to be married to any race of woman, for a Black woman to be married to a white man basically meant that she was forsaking her culture, and worse yet, that a Black man wasn't good enough for her. So Kamala wasn't getting a lot of approval from those folks, either.

Those things at least partially explain why some minorities went for Trump.

Just my opinion.

by Anonymousreply 65May 22, 2025 6:21 PM

So the Republican House has now passed a massively anti-working class, pro-billionaire bill that I assume all the people shrieking and howling and sobbing about ending identity politics and defending the working class will be furious at, and will be screaming bloody murder about. Right? RIGHT?

by Anonymousreply 66May 22, 2025 6:25 PM

All of my people would like to move away from the US, but do not have the money to escape. The few rich people I know, have vanished from urban environments. It’s Spring, so some of them may have been skiing the last month. Shirley, they have no ski excuse now…

We’re working poor people, so I can’t speak for the rest.

Have you ever asked yourself why your tiny, diseased mind only took note of this practice when it resulted in the selection of a black woman and why you don’t normally think these demographic criteria result in the nomination of unqualified people to be Vice President but you do when it results in the selection of a black woman?

by Anonymousreply 76May 23, 2025 3:39 AM

FINALLY somebody gets it — kinda— about MAGATs.

But not only are they bigots who will never ever vote for Dems, what has to be understood is that no matter what Trump does to them, no matter how much his policies screw them over, they will still vote for him. And they will never, ever vote for Dems.

They can’t be reasoned with, they can’t be appealed to. These are the people who put their worship of Trump over the lives of their own children. Why on earth would Dems think they are rational? They’re insane. They always will be.

Yet the Dem party just gets weaker and weaker. And has the worst, most ineffective leaders in congress. Schumer and Jeffries are tragic.

by Anonymousreply 78May 23, 2025 9:47 AM

by Anonymousreply 80May 23, 2025 10:50 AM

Dems are not just weak and tragic, they are old and dying. The budget bill wouldn’t have passed in the House if the elderly Dem who died of cancer other day before the vote had just not run last time. Blue district, there would have been a Dem to vote against the bill.

So the bill passed by one vote because an obviously dying rep with an otherwise exemplary record put his career over the good of his constituents. Tragic indeed. Kinda like Ginsberg.

by Anonymousreply 81May 23, 2025 10:58 AM

^not really. with 3 Dems still alive the Repubs would still have a majority of 5 in the House. They set is up to win by 1 vote to allow some. Repubs to not vote. But obviously Dems dying is not a good thing.

r76 I would LOVE to see a politician proudly tell a crowd of a Black voters that he chose a Black candidate to get their votes.

Regarding Johnson for the southern votes. There are different groups of people that fall under the "Southerner" label. Mike Pence for religious votes. Again, there are all kinds of groups under the religion umbrella. Whites, Latinos, Blacks, Asians, etc. Politicians are supposed to cast wider nets.

Going back to Kamala Harris. You'll NEVER convince me that she was not just a token "Woman of Color" pick to show off to the dem voters. For example, Elizabeth Warren could run circles around her any time of the day in terms of policy debates and analysis but the Democrats needed their show pony instead beside Joe Biden.

"Oh, look at here. We have our first ever female Vice-President, our first ever woman of color VP, the first south-asian descendant VP. Isn't that great?" Meanwhile, she could barely talk about policies and give good interviews and without cackling of course.

Keep digging that hole deeper though.

I'll say at minimum 50% of his supporters are racists, the rest fall into a wide spectrum of different views.

Trump Voters Are Racist...and as Trump spins them around to spew their hate, he is picking their pockets.

He is truly the finest confidence man and salesman in all of recorded history.

There are non-racists who loathe LGBT. Let's not limit ourselves. And there are people who hate Muslims but would claim they don't have a racist bone in their body because they have no problem with individuals of any race as long as they're American, Christian, able-bodied and middle-class at minimum.

What it all comes down to is basic bigotry. Trump tells people it's okay to hate muslims, make fun of disabled people, call Mexicans criminals and denounce trans people at every opportunity. He's like a cafeteria of hatred, just step right up and pick out your favorite prejudice. Have more than one if you want, it's an all you can eat buffet of hatred.

There are some real angry people out there who live to inflict pain on anyone they see as different or weak.

I like Elizabeth Warren. I donated to her presidential campaign. I wanted a wicked smart woman in the WH. But I also knew that old white men—and plenty of younger ones—feel threatened by a woman with intelligence. She reminded them of that teacher in school who made them feel dumb.

I don’t want a president that I can sit down and have a beer with. I want someone who is smarter than I am.

I could have written that myself, R88!

Marry me?
I would LOVE to see a politician proudly tell a crowd of a Black voters that he chose a Black candidate to get their votes.

And you should not and would not expect that to happen, just as you wouldn't expect Mondale to say, "here's the women I chose to pander for your votes" or Trump to say, "here's the fundamentalist you asked for." What is it about your stupidity and weird attitudes about black people that causes you to expect these weird things to occur to occur when a black woman is involved and not otherwise?

Also, do you realize how weird and creepy it makes you seem when you say a black woman is unqualified because you can think of one white woman you find more capable? There were hundreds of politicians more capable than George HW Bush. Did you get all worked up that Reagan appointed a white man despite that fact. And, of course, when it comes to Trump, the man Harris was running against, the number of people more qualified than him. Why is the fact that you can think of some person or persons who are more qualified so damning when a black woman is involved but not otherwise?

So many weird and deeply stupid attitudes.

Don't you dare call us racists when we do racist things.

It would be a great start if the Democratic Party just quit losing the people from the base that have recently left and are still leaving.

I liked Elizabeth Warren but the “I’m going to have a trans kid help pick my secretary of education” was cringe.
