It's shocking to me how far Janet fell. I guess it can be traced back to the Superbowl "wardrobe malfunction" escapade, but prior to that, if you consider the late 80s through very early 2000s, Janet's popularity basically rivaled Madonna's. I wouldn't say she was ever a "legend" like Madonna, a status that is comprised of more things than Billboard chart placements and record sales, but she was most definitely a superstar. She had a few less than stellar albums in the early/mid 2000s, which coupled with the Superbowl incident and subsequent backlash seemed to derail everything, but I still can't quite think of another major act that had such a sharp fall from the top. And she has never really recovered from it, whereas other artists who had periods of collapse (Mariah, post Glitter, for example) were able to rise again and recover at least some of the ground they had lost.

I agree that Janet was massively influential and she often goes ignored but Michael and Madonna had 0 reason to be jealous of her. Why would they be? They were the two biggest pop stars of the 20th century while Janet was nowhere near that level. Janet stans do her a big diservice by comparing her success to Michael's and Madonna's. She will lose that battle, hard.

Paula enjoyed her success off of the back of Janet's Control album, whose videos dazzlingly showcased her choreography and got her gigs with George Michael, ZZ Top, Debbie Gibson, The Pointer Sisters and several other music acts, and even landed her some film work (Coming To America, Can't Buy Me Love, The Running Man, Action Jackson, etc.). Her debut album Forever Your Girl was clearly a direct result of her work with Janet and the rousing success of Control.

I always thought Whitney's cover of Janet's "Control" in a 1987 concert was cute.

I didn't suggest their jealousy was rational. Both were extremely egotistical and always looking over their shoulder. Janet was "cooler" than Madonna or MJ. She was the Queen for young urban audiences.

I'm no Janbot because my favorite Jackson is La Toya (do not come for me because I didn't send for you!) but I never understood all of the hate Janet constantly gets on here.

Janet was definitely more popular in the 90s than Madonna and MJ--in America, at least. I always felt that Madonna's Bedtime Stories and MJ's Dangerous and History were their way of trying to compete with the Janet/Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis sound of the 90s.

Randy Jackson (Janet's brother, not the other one) was once involved with Paula Abdul.
