CONCERT CRISIS: Janet Jackson unable to sell tickets to Las Vegas residency as 60% of seats remain unsold
Janet Jackson is struggling to sell tickets to her Las Vegas residency, and about 60% of seats are still available for Wednesday night's premiere performance, The U.S. Sun can confirm. Jackson's Las Vegas residency's premiere night has so far seen a poor ticket sale turn out with just one day till showtime.
The Vegas hotel signed on to bring Janet, 59, back for shorter run in February that stretched over Valentine's Day, and then again this week from May 21 through May 31 with six shows.
But with the big opening night just one day away, ticket sales on AXS show a majority of seats in the 5,000 person venue still available. The other dates do not look much more packed than the premiere. Prices range from just above $50 to $444 a seat, according to the ticketing site.

Never understand why she has trouble with ticket sales. She has 27 top 10 hits which she always perform. She doesn't play every shitty song on a new album like another contemporary. She dances and she engages the crowd too.

The main issue is she’s no longer a media personality. Even Madonna tries with her pathetic insta pictures. Usually, these old timey singers play small suburban venues to entertain the adoring fraus. JJ thinks she can still sell out massive venues

It's foolish to compare Madonna and Janet. Madonna literally gets 5x the streams of Janet on Spotify on a daily basis (same as Mariah) so clearly one of them is doing better than the other.

Remember, Madonna's Madame X tour was a flop that had many cancelled shows (in small theaters to boot). The only reason her last tour was a success was because she finally played songs that people had been wanting to hear for decades.
And her Rio show which keeps getting brought up was a free concert. Many acts have done them and attracted the same numbers. Including Gaga, who recently did a show there and pulled bigger numbers than Madonna.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | May 22, 2025 5:03 PM

If Janet had a free concert, would 1.6 million people show up? Doubtful. And it makes sense Gaga would pull bigger numbers, she's not a legacy act.

It never felt like she liked to perform or that she extends much to her fans. Hardly any interviews or talk shows or anything - practically a shut-in for the past couple of decades. She's not a big personality.
I think you need to generate excitement as an artist to generate sales - she just doesn't - for me, at least.
I'm also tired of these residencies being pushed and promoted so much. Celine brought them back in a huge way and that was a big deal at the time as I think she was still at the top of her career then (?).
Just call it what it is - a series of dates. The PR around a residency has lost its buzz. The U2 dates did well but - they are U2 and they also played a really trippy high-effect show at the Sphere that was mind-blowing.

It's shocking to me how far Janet fell. I guess it can be traced back to the Superbowl "wardrobe malfunction" escapade, but prior to that, if you consider the late 80s through very early 2000s, Janet's popularity basically rivaled Madonna's. I wouldn't say she was ever a "legend" like Madonna, a status that is comprised of more things than Billboard chart placements and record sales, but she was most definitely a superstar. She had a few less than stellar albums in the early/mid 2000s, which coupled with the Superbowl incident and subsequent backlash seemed to derail everything, but I still can't quite think of another major act that had such a sharp fall from the top. And she has never really recovered from it, whereas other artists who had periods of collapse (Mariah, post Glitter, for example) were able to rise again and recover at least some of the ground they had lost.

Janet and Al Mana had a secret marriage away from the spotlight because it had a business agreement behind it.
The agreement had two clauses. One was that the singer would receive $100 million if their marriage lasted at least five years.
The second clause was that she would receive another $100 million if she gave birth to a boy for the billionaire.
Jackson became pregnant in 2016 and had a son, Elissa, in 2017, when she was 50 years old.
The singer decided to file for divorce on the basis of cultural differences from her billionaire husband in 2017, shortly after she gave birth to her son.
Al Mana also kept his own part of the bargain by giving Jackson the sum of $200 million after they parted ways.

Maybe a real issue for Janet is that she comes from that "family" and the weird reputation that comes from being a part of that family. Or maybe it's a testament to how much Michael overshadowed all of his siblings and set the bar way too high. And he still breaks records even after the accusations. All Janet did was flash her nipple for two seconds. Literally, a two second clip gave birth to Youtube, but she can't create a buzz for herself. I'm mystified.

Uh, no. This is rewriting history. At her peak, the only female artist Madonna was jealous of was Whitney. Madonna said that when Whitney died. She never felt threatened by Janet. In fact, she made fun of her a lot. Arsenio Hall himself spoke about this. Madonna was so bold/dumb that she actually told Michael Jackson that he shouldn't working with Janet because it would (to parphrase) be beneath him at the Oscars ceremony (I believe Jermaine spoke about this). That pissed Michael off to no end lol. He obviously told Janet that which is probably what prompted her to tell Ebony "as far as I"m concerned, if you don't have something nice to say, don't say it. But if I did hate her, I'd have good reason to." She doesn't feel the same way about Janet now, her son listens to Janet all the time and even performed to her songs.

I'll never understand why people keep comparing Madonna and Janet Jackson. It happens in every thread about Janet. Madonna is a bona fide music icon who is still to this day, the highest selling female artist in music history and known all over the planet. Janet isn't even in the same league as Madonna. Not even vaguely. Comparing Janet with Madonna is ridiculous and unfair to Janet because it's impossible to compete with the career of Madonna.
A good comparison for Janet would be Paula Abdul. Similar number of hits, sales and fame, similar level of vocal ability and similar dance ability. The only difference is that Janet was handed a music career due to the Jackson family industry connections.

Idiotic is being nice. It’s downright stupid. Debbie Gibson? Jody Watley? 😆Surely he jests. Janet Jackson is an icon. Her stamp is on generations of pop and R&B acts. Her superstar status was cemented with the hit-making streak that ran from 1986’s Control (which, by the way, influenced late ‘80s debut albums by Watley, Pebbles, Karyn White, Paula Abdul et. al.) through to 2001’s All For You, where each release was a #1 event with multiple award wins (including Grammys and an Oscar nom), record setting chart and music industry achievements and tours, films, endorsements, and a bevy of influential music videos that still influence today’s artists - let alone several of her albums are on Greatest of All Time lists. From Britney and Beyonce to Gaga and Rihanna, she’s your fave’s fave and has influenced them all.

AND? This oft-stated comment about her always perplexes me. So what? She can’t help what family she was born into. She actually didn’t even want to become a recording artist at first, but was convinced by her father to go into the family business after a stint as a child actress. It when until she finally decided to take the reins of her career and fire her father as her manager that she began to soar. Anyway, Hollywood is rife with nepotism, and Janet Jackson’s familial ties are no different than anyone else who comes from a famous family. Even if your name gets you through the door, it’s ultimately what you do when you get in the room that matters. Of all the Jackson siblings, she is the only one other than Michael to achieve true worldwide superstardom. If being a “Jackson” guaranteed success, then every solo Jackson act would be an iconic multi-platinum album-selling member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

32 years ago, on May 18, 1993, Janet was the highest paid female recording artist with her new recording $40M contract with Virgin Records, and debuted at the top of the Hot 200 album charts with "janet", staying there for 6 weeks.
Then Streisand inked her new contract with Columbia, becoming the highest paid female recording artist (reported to be closer to the $50M mark), and knocks Jackson out of the top spot by debuting at #1 with "Back to Broadway" upon it's release on June 29. People expected Streisand's album to do well, but no one was truly expecting and album of B'way showtunes to knock 'janet' out of the top spot in 1993.

[quote]I find it interesting that Janet's recent tour did absolutely nothing to create interest in her back catalogue
Either you’re living under a rock (which is a likely scenario for most of you people), or somehow completely missed that her top 3 Hot 100 hit from 2001, “Someone To Call My Lover,” recently went insanely viral on TikTok and boosted her streaming numbers exponentially.

R105, she does. Her touring style is different from Madonna, she is more "intimate". Madonna is intimate in moments (like "In this Life" in the Girlie Show) but she is more concerned with putting on an exciting show. I like both. But Madonna is the greater touring act.

R110 To me stats like that are meaningless. Janet released a few albums and singles prior to Rhythm Nation. She just wasn’t able to tour until that point in her career. Well some artists like Britney did a world tour a year after their debut album. It took Queen Bey took only her 2nd album to conduct a headlining world tour.

Janet is also the first woman to debut a single (two, to be exact) in the top 10 of the Hot 100, the first woman to nab a Producer of the Year Grammy nom, the only artist with 7 top 5 Hot 100 hits on a single album, the first artist to have an album produce #1 singles in three separate calendar years, the first artist to debut an album at #1 during the SoundScan era, the first artist to have a Hot 100 #1 in the 80s/90s/2000s, the first artist to have three albums generate five or more top-ten singles, the only black artist with #1 albums spanning the 80s/90s/2000s/2010s, the only Jackson with an Oscar nomination...

And still do. They exist in the house that Janet helped build, and no amount of idol worship from their stans (you included) will change that. And, Britney ain’t bigger than anybody these days, poor thing. Swaggerjacked Janet’s whole career and now exists only to twirl in a haze on her social media platforms. But, at least she does it to Janet songs.

Poor Teacunt probably wasn’t around when Janet was ruling MTV and the Billboard charts, debuting films at #1 at the US box office, signing record-breaking album deals, winning awards hand-over-fist and reaping massive dividends from her influential world tours. At least Beyonce was watching, practicing her moves with a hairbrush in front of her mother’s mirror. Oh, and Solange too, who is also on record for saying that Janet was an influence (and whose own albums are like the daughters to Janet’s “The Velvet Rope” album).

[quote]What big singles did Barbara have off that album?
None. Not one. No radio promotion or MTV promotion with videos like Janet had preceding her album's release. That is what was truly baffling - a Streisand album of show tunes debuts at #1 with no promotion (except magazine ads mostly in trade magazines), knocks the highly publicized Janet Jackson album out of the top spot. No one saw that coming. And Streisand would repeat this strategy again in 1997 ("Higher Ground"), in 2009 ("Love Is The Answer"), in 2014 ("Partners") and in 2016 ("Movie Partners Sing Broadway").
(There were plans to release 'With One Look' as a single with a video in the USA, but that was scrapped. The single was released in the UK, only because it was used in radio and TV ads promoting ALW's opening of 'Sunset Boulevard' that summer, which pissed off Lupone).

R118 There are countries where Janet Jackson is simply unknown. There is no country on planet Earth where Britney and Beyonce are not known by the general public or people who follow pop culture. Maybe some African countries don’t know Britney.

I used to cap for Janet before her MAGA stance. This bitch walking around with a half Indian child just like Kamala Harris’ background. So is Janet’s child not black? Then again, the Jacksons are so fucked up in the head, she probably wishes the child has no African ancestry.

[quote][R110], you tried...
No, honey. YOU tried, and failed. EPICALLY. The Monster Ball was not Gaga’s debut tour. Her debut tour was the Fame Ball Tour, and while it did pull in respectable revenue, it did not make nearly as much as the Rhythm Nation tour. If there’s one thing TeaCunt got right in here, it’s that you can’t always trust AI - a lesson I’m sure you’ll remember next time.
So, in short — The Rhythm Nation World Tour remains the most successful debut tour by an artist, and this is a fact that you’ll just have to breathe in and learn to live with.

Forgive them because they know not what to think.
Indeed, Janet BUILT the house for the Black girls. Some of you are too old and drug-addled to remember when Madonna AND Michael Jackson were envious of Janet's unflagging success. She hit at a time when Black women and their music were not critically acclaimed or rewarded unless it appeared a white man was the svengali. Janet didn't have a Clive Davis or a Tommy Mottola pulling levers behind the scenes.

R138: They're not the same, you can easily detect that with their writing style. Janbot has been here long enough where veteran DLers are familiar with his postings. This is why we know when he arrives in a Janet thread, even when he doesn't sign his posts as "Janbot."
Janbot, while vociferously devoted to Janet, sounds educated and has a command of the English language; TeaQueef does not.

I agree that Janet was massively influential and she often goes ignored but Michael and Madonna had 0 reason to be jealous of her. Why would they be? They were the two biggest pop stars of the 20th century while Janet was nowhere near that level. Janet stans do her a big diservice by comparing her success to Michael's and Madonna's. She will lose that battle, hard.

Paula enjoyed her success off of the back of Janet's Control album, whose videos dazzlingly showcased her choreography and got her gigs with George Michael, ZZ Top, Debbie Gibson, The Pointer Sisters and several other music acts, and even landed her some film work (Coming To America, Can't Buy Me Love, The Running Man, Action Jackson, etc.). Her debut album Forever Your Girl was clearly a direct result of her work with Janet and the rousing success of Control.
