I have diarrhea nearly every morning. It’s no IBS because I don’t have spasms or cramping or discomfort of any kind. It’s especially difficult if I’m having breakfast out. What do you think it is?

Obvious possibilities:
- side effect from meds?
- is this a new thing or has it happened a lot over the years? IBS or food intolerances can do this.
It’s definitely something to mention to your primary care physician.

OP I have suffered from IBD nearly all my life. For a while I took Metamucil and I was having these horrible spasms, constipation followed by terrible spasms and diarrhea. I stopped the Metamucil and now I rarely have an attack. But I also know that I need to get my fiber from what I eat. You might have an opposite problem in the sense that the foods you eat are triggering. Now I strongly agree with everyone telling you to get to a doctor, and especially a GI specialist. Gastroenterologist. Some times you can have blood in your stool and not see it. And having a very loose stool doesn't mean you don't have a blockage. You need to put yourself on a very restricted diet and see what may possibly be triggering. Maybe it is coffee. Or maybe it's something else. Make sure you're drinking enough water , at least 64 -70 ounces a day. Make sure you get enough exercise. A 30 minute walk daily. At a minimum. Avoid fresh fruit and fresh vegetables and nuts until you get checked out. No red meat or processed fatty foods. You got to get it checked and fast.

What are you complaining about? I love diarrhea!
by Anonymous | reply 30 | May 21, 2025 9:39 PM |
I was having total toilet blowouts and it was because I was lactose intolerant and was eating a lot of yogurt. I thought the yogurt was helping my system, when it was actually the problem.

My boyfriends a nurse and he thinks it’s either a germ or there’s a dietary issue I don’t have cramps or spasms and my stools haven’t any blood in them. I do drink coffee, at least two cups every morning and I drink alcohol. Must I give up alcohol?
by Anonymous | reply 81 | May 23, 2025 12:56 AM |
R10 I was going to ask about alcohol. Yes, discontinue that for now. If you have some germ or your flora got messed up, alcohol just exasperates it. And limit your coffee intake, it is a diuretic.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | May 23, 2025 1:08 AM |
Is it a wide spray or does it pulsate from side to side like one of those lawn irrigators?
Does it start wet or is it like a soft-serve and then it goes to a hard rain?
Does the color change?
by Anonymous | reply 83 | May 23, 2025 1:34 AM |
OP you will hate this but you gotta stop with the coffee and the alcohol. Have green tea or a non caffeinated herbal tea. No milk. Have a small bowl of plain, 0% fat yogurt with some granola. Don't eat fresh fruit or vegetables for a couple weeks. And do not eat red meat, fatty foods or processed foods. Avoids sweets, too. Drink water during the day. It's important. About 64 ounces a day. Good luck. Oh. Avoid spicey foods too.

by Anonymous | reply 87 | May 23, 2025 3:57 AM |
R85 you may not die, but if you have serious colon issues and ignore the way certain foods aggravate them, you might deteriorate to the point you eventually get part of your colon cut out and are wearing a fucking colostomy bag for a few months. I am not saying this episode is that extreme, but since you have no idea what is causing this, just think about it. There is nothing to say that the measures I suggested are necessarily permanent. But they will give your colon a chance to heal. If you stick to a good healthy plan 6 days a week there's no reason why you can't have a reasonable cheat day.

Go to a GI doctor. Start the process today because it takes forever. The appointment will be scheduled for weeks or months away. At that appt, the doctor will likely order a colonoscopy. That will be another long wait unless there is an unexpected opening. But it's important to have one if you never have and are having symptoms.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | May 23, 2025 9:43 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 108 | May 25, 2025 5:14 PM |
I was taking Metamucil daily for several years and I had chronic IBS-C . About two times a month or more, I was constipated for days, then I was getting horrible cramps and muscle spasms, some so bad I was on the floor, sweating, chills and even nausea. Then I would evacuate, and literally empty myself out. The process would start again. I finally started taking Dicyclomine for the spasms, and I stopped the Metamucil and now I don't allow myself to get constipated. I get enough fiber in my food, I drink water, exercise, and I will take just a scant tablespoon of Miralax three or four times week if I get stopped up. My GI specialist said the small amount of Miralax will help balance the moisture/water in my colon. It's taken years to figure out what to do, but I'm feeling much better.
