It just dawned on me that they met when he was a foreign exchange student in high school, and if she weren't attending public school as well, they never would have met.

The fact that he and his parents (presumably) elected for him to go to Mississippi, the state ranked 49th in educational/academic achievement, suggests that he probably comes from some conservative religious sect.
