"Madden" movie set is a SHIT SHOW

A supporting actor in the upcoming "Madden" film quit on Friday -- just two weeks into production -- allegedly over the use of the N-word and full frontal nudity.

TMZ spoke with five members of the cast and crew for the upcoming film starring Nicolas Cage as the NFL legend, and Christian Bale as Raiders owner Al Davis ... and they independently leveled some serious claims about the film's director, David O. Russell.

One "Madden" individual said production had been a "mess" with conflicts, like the aforementioned allegations ... and tensions were being exacerbated by Nic and Christian, who are both true Method actors -- portraying their characters with an intensity that doesn't end when the cameras stop rolling.

Crew and cast members told us that on Friday, Russell was working with the unnamed actor on an impromptu monologue when the director allegedly said the N-word ... and that upset the actor, along with others, who allegedly walked off set before they broke for lunch, and subsequently wrapped for the day.

Studio sources tell TMZ ... It was actually the actor's idea to include the N-word in the scene after a private creative conversation with the director ... but ultimately the word was not used when they shot the scene. The sources stand firm -- David did not say the word while shooting the scene -- but declined to speculate what upset the actor and others in the moment.

We're also told by the cast and crew sources that a day earlier, the same actor made it clear he did not want to be nude in a scene -- a locker room setting -- which allegedly pissed off David, and his reaction was "unprofessional."

However, the studio sources say an intimacy coordinator tried to make the actor more comfortable and suggested different blocking, but the actor still had an issue, which is when David, calmly, said he didn't have to be in the shot. The studio stressed that nudity was not sprung on anyone -- everyone knew well in advance parts would be on display.

Studio sources also noted that the door for the actor to return to production is not closed ... and "conversations" are ongoing.

If you agree to play a pro athlete in a film with locker room locations you can’t suddenly demand a towel dance.

by Anonymousreply 2May 21, 2025 2:35 PM

What an idiot this unnamed actor is--nothing like fucking your career up by alienating a powerful movie director.

by Anonymousreply 3May 21, 2025 3:17 PM

You would never guess from OP's photo that both those men were once considered incredibly hot leading men.

by Anonymousreply 4May 21, 2025 3:22 PM

It's almost as if they're wearing costumes.

by Anonymousreply 5May 21, 2025 3:28 PM

Nicolas Cage + Christian Bale + David O. Russell + a story of a Football legend?

Let me block this out in my calendar this instant

by Anonymousreply 6May 21, 2025 3:42 PM

There are only 6 actors listed on IMDB, and one is an unknown (to me at least.) His mini bio written by himself is ridiculous:

^most of this guy’s work is ‘uncredited’. Does that mean he’s basically an extra?

If so, he’d be dumb to complain if he actually has a credited role in this movie. Get that dick out, Dan!

by Anonymousreply 8May 21, 2025 4:06 PM

[quote] Get that dick out, Dan!

His dick doesn’t want to be associated with that terribly written IMDb bio.

by Anonymousreply 9May 21, 2025 4:18 PM

This looks fantastic.

by Anonymousreply 10May 21, 2025 4:28 PM

I just knew this tsuris would have to be on a Russell set.

When is David O. Russell not pissed off?

Two actors I’ve never particularly cared for and a topic I couldn’t care less about. This is the must-avoid hit of the year!

That said, Gen Z seems to be addicted to performative outrage. It’s all part of the Peter Pan-ism of millennials, Zs and As (the digital generations). They’re supposedly adults, but Gen Zs still do childish things like throw temper tantrums for attention.

And at least on social media (all they seem to care about), it often works.

But this guy is about to find out that social media isn’t reality. He’s also about to ask you if you want fries with that.

by Anonymousreply 13May 21, 2025 4:38 PM

Would never watch this sports movie.

by Anonymousreply 14May 21, 2025 4:40 PM

[quote]He’s also about to ask you if you want fries with that.

It would depend on what "that" is.

by Anonymousreply 15May 21, 2025 4:41 PM

How did this obese redneck Madden rate a film biopic?

by Anonymousreply 16May 21, 2025 5:23 PM

Did mean star Nicholas Cage "call out" the prominent sparkle pony extra for eating the last roast beef slider on the craft services table? Did abusive Christian Bale "go psycho" on the extra's laughable, time-wasting towel dance, screaming "Nobody is gonna even notice your Princess Tiny Meat, dude!"

by Anonymousreply 17May 21, 2025 6:22 PM

Dan playing himself writing his profile could be a great scene in a sequel to "Waiting for Guffman."

by Anonymousreply 18May 21, 2025 7:01 PM

"He has played significant roles in different channels, but his attractive features and charisma make him the leading choice of ambassador today."

by Anonymousreply 19May 21, 2025 11:40 PM

Hasn’t D.O. Russel always been known to be a massive dickehead?

by Anonymousreply 20May 22, 2025 12:43 AM

Yes

by Anonymousreply 21May 22, 2025 1:01 AM

R11 I came here to post that, too!

You beat me too it....Lily tried to warn everybody.

I always confuse David O. Russell with David Fincher. Fincher also has a reputation as difficult, right?

by Anonymousreply 23May 22, 2025 1:12 AM

Why does a movie about Madden need nudity? Why do we need a movie about John. Madden anyway?

by Anonymousreply 24May 22, 2025 1:17 AM

I'm the original David O.

He has such a horrible reputation Russell. I don’t know how he keeps getting attached to all these movies. Isn’t there other good directors out there. He treats his female actresses like shit and his crew. George Clooney said he would never work with him again. I just don’t understand why Bale likes working with him so much.

by Anonymousreply 28May 22, 2025 2:23 AM

First and foremost, the entire cast did not walk off the set. There was, however, an incident involving one actor and David O. Russell. This actor subsequently quit the production. Importantly, no other actors walked off with him, and filming remained on schedule. Today, we received an update from an exclusive source that sheds further light on the situation. The actor in question, who plays a football player in the movie, reportedly "showed up to set today unannounced [Wednesday, May 21, 2025] despite not being on the call sheet". Our source states he attempted to rally the other "players" (actors) around him, but his efforts were unsuccessful. As a result, this actor was subsequently removed from the set and production continued with all the cast on set. From @deuxmoi

Julia Stiles has spoken about having a “hard time” with controversial filmmaker David O Russell.

The actor, 44, starred in Russell’s critically acclaimed 2012 movie Silver Linings Playbook. The comedy-drama follows Pat Solatano (Bradley Cooper) as he adjusts to life outside a mental health institution and meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence). Stiles played Tiffany’s sister, Veronica.

In a new interview with The Times, Stiles briefly spoke about her experience with the director, 66, who has received Oscar nominations for his work on Silver Linings along with The Fighter (2010) and American Hustle (2013).

“I had a hard time with David O Russell,” Stiles told the publication. “His style is very challenging, but I did learn a lot from him and he does make good movies.”

Russell’s behaviour as a director has been under scrutiny on several occasions throughout his career.

He had a notorious run-in with George Clooney on the set of 1999’s war heist movie Three Kings. Clooney – who has called Russell a “miserable f***” – claimed Russell head-butted and insulted him.

“Quite honestly, if he comes near me, I'll sock him right in the f***ing mouth,” said the actor years later in 2004.

Russell denied the claims at the time. “I never physically attacked him. If I ran into him, I'd say, ‘Shut the f*** up, you lying-ass b***,’” he said.

In 2003, as reported by The New York Times, Russell allegedly attacked Christopher Nolan at a Hollywood party, putting the Inception director in a headlock. The alleged altercation occurred because Russell wanted to cast Jude Law, who had signed on to do a Nolan film, in his movie I Heart Huckabees.

Another controversy occurred when leaked footage showed Russell raging against Lily Tomlin on set, after she expressed frustration with his requests for the scene they were shooting.

In the clip, Russell can be seen calling the actor a “b****” and a “c***”. He also kicks an object off the table at which Tomlin is sitting.

According to The New York Times, Russell locked himself in the office and refused to leave until Tomlin went in to apologise.

As reported by the publication, when asked about the incident later, Russell said: “Sure, I wish I hadn’t done that. But Lily and I are fine.”

Tomlin appeared to brush off the incident, stating: “It’s not a practice on his part or my part. I’d rather have someone human and available and raw and open. Don’t give me someone cold, or cut off, or someone who considers themselves dignified.”

In March 2011, Paul Reuben alleged that Russell screamed at him “at the top of his lungs” on his first day working on Nailed, which was later released in 2015 under the title Accidental Love.

Amy Adams also had a difficult experience with the director, telling GQ that Russell made her cry on the set of American Hustle.

“I was really just devastated on set,” she recalls. Acknowledging that other co-stars did not have the same experience, Adams said: “ [Jennifer Lawrence is] Teflon. And I am not Teflon. But I also don’t like to see other people treated badly, you know what I mean?”

Despite the string of controversies with high-profile actors, Russell still managed to put together an all-star cast for his 2022 film Amsterdam.

The film, which was his first since 2015’s Joy, starred Robert De Niro, Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, John David Washington, Rami Malek, Zoe Saldana and Anya Taylor-Joy, with pop star Taylor Swift also cast.

When the cast was announced, people on social media criticised their choice to work with the director given the number of allegations against him.

Bale defended the director’s behaviour, telling IndieWire: “It’s a very unique experience. David is unlike any other film director, and that’s what you want.

“That’s the whole point. A director brings a point of view, and a rhythm and everything, and the great ones are always unique. They’re singular. And David is that. Truly one of the greats.”

by Anonymousreply 30May 22, 2025 2:31 AM

Does David have blackmail on Bale? Bale could work with any director he wants. Why he wants to work with this big piece of shit. I have no idea. He’s is absolutely terrible to his crew and especially to female actresses. Who wants to work 14 hours with someone like that? I can’t believe he’s attached to the Linda Ronstadt movie.

by Anonymousreply 31May 22, 2025 2:37 AM

Would Bale's kink for submission translate to his relationship with Russell albeit in a non-sexual way?

by Anonymousreply 32May 22, 2025 2:44 AM

What do you mean, non-sexual?

by Anonymousreply 33May 22, 2025 4:11 AM

Do you think Bale has the figure to play Linda Ronstadt?

by Anonymousreply 34May 22, 2025 4:54 AM

I thought thus was going to be about Richard and Froy.

¡Froy!

by Anonymousreply 35May 22, 2025 5:02 AM

Lily seems to have chalked it up to "creative differences" and moved on.

by Anonymousreply 36May 22, 2025 5:39 AM

“He is a prominent actor who rose to prominence . . . “

🙄

by Anonymousreply 37May 22, 2025 6:07 AM

I want see Christian Bale naked but I don’t want to see Christian Bale as a naked Al Davis.

by Anonymousreply 38May 22, 2025 6:11 AM

I do. I want to see Bale play the bitchtly volatile Davis.

by Anonymousreply 39May 22, 2025 12:18 PM

The makeup people did an incredible job on Bale. Doppelganger.

by Anonymousreply 40May 22, 2025 12:32 PM

[quote] and tensions were being exacerbated by Nic and Christian, who are both true Method actors -- portraying their characters with an intensity that doesn't end when the cameras stop rolling

Aka, a pair of overpaid and entitled douchbags who think they are more important than they actually are. Neither of these cunts would be anywhere without nepotism. I used to really like Christian, but it's become obvious that he's a little bitch, especially on movie sets. There's some audio of him on YouTube and he's chewing out the crew members on another project he worked on. What a deeply unpleasant human being.

Nic Cage has been a creep his whole life. He fetishizes Asian people and Elvis. They're both way past their prime, and David is a hack director. I've never been into football, so I'll never see this shitty movie.

by Anonymousreply 41May 22, 2025 1:12 PM

Haha somebody lost sonething along the way.

by Anonymousreply 42May 22, 2025 2:12 PM

[quote] Does David have blackmail on Bale? Bale could work with any director he wants. Why he wants to work with this big piece of shit.

Bale is also abusive on sets, so it doesn't bother him.

by Anonymousreply 43May 22, 2025 3:42 PM

Russell was speaking about an impromptu monologue and this is what set off some no-name princess and caused this testy towel whisperer to walk off the set??? Way to blow up your career in a few pissy huffs.

R28, Jennifer Lawrence has worked with him on three films: Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle and Joy. She received Oscar nomination for all three, winning for SLP. She has always maintained a good working relationship with him and was papped having lunch with him late last year in NYC (he had his briefcase in tow) so maybe they're planning a future collaboration.
