I'm not the prime audience for gangster films, but this 1973 production by American International Pictures (known largely for its horror and grindhouse fodder in the late '60s and '70s) surprisingly hits all the right notes for me. The dusty, depression-era midwest setting is perfectly done, the violence is brutal, and the cast is fantastic: Warren Oates, Michelle Phillips, Cloris Leachman, Ben Johnson, Harry Dean Stanton, Richard Dreyfuss. Phillips especially handled herself nicely in this for an acting debut. I think it's one of the best unsung films of the '70s.
Warren Oates is great / died of a heart attack at age 53

At the church I went to there was a quiet woman who was always friendly but a bit stand offish.
After knowing her for years - my father told me matter of factly, she's John Dillinger's half sister......
They had the same crooked smile. It was kind of scary to talk to her after that.

I always thought Warren Oates was a rugged, sexy man. Good actor too.

Oates was a good ringer for Dillinger.
