I was craving a chocolate bar today and picked up a Hershey Bar; it tasted awful. Now that I have chocolate on my brain, I have to satisfy the craving. Do you have any suggestions? FYI, I don't like dark or white chocolate.
Fat Whores: Do you have any chocolate recommendations?

Do you like Lindt?

Depends on what you like and how much you want to spend and what's available and how fast you want it.
When I get a craving and knuckle under I'll get a Ritter Sport Milk Chocolate with Butter Biscuit from the corner store. And some stout to accompany it
Oh look I can get 11 for $30 on Amazon š¤

For every day, I like Lindt or Ghirardelli.
But the absolute best chocolate Iāve ever had has been from this local shop in Boston that sells Mexican chocolate. Itās gritty but the flavor is out of this world.

I love Ritter Sport. Especially with hazel nut.

Dove. It has a hard outer shell and a softer center, which is a nice combo.

Everyone bitches about it now but I still love Cadbury - any and all, but especially Dairy Milk.

The Pound Plus chocolate bars at Trader Joe's are pretty good, and just the right size for a fat whore.

This thread prompts me to wonder: Who buys all those small $8 bars at Whole Foods? The ones that claim to be Environmentally Correct, Humanely Produced, and Sustainably Grown? They often feature photographs of wild animals and smiling brown people.

Li-Lac is very good. I buy their beautiful Easter candy for my family, and also they produce really cool specialty molds. Itās an excellent company. A special treat.

I vote for Ritter also. Even the plain milk chocolate is delicious. I also like Guylene.

Nestle Aero Bar which can be found in the international food department in some Krogers and other grocery stores. It's chocolate with air bubbles in it and is delicious. Curiously it's the one thing in Kroger that has a stable price. It's been $1.29 for years now.

I used to love those individual Dove wrapped chocolates. But about five years ago, two bags I bought had WORMS wriggling around in EVERY PIECE. I read that the factory had been invaded by pantry moths, which are notoriously hard to get rid of. Have never bought them since, obviously.

Ritter Sport is good, but unless it's on some sort of sale, far too expensive these days.

R19 Yes, Ritter is delicious. Their hazelnut bar is a guilty pleasure. Milka is (or was) also very good quality, too.
I use āwasā in quotes on the chance that some brands are reformulated for the North American consumer. I understand from expatriates that versions of some brands vary in different commercial markets.

R16 Dark chocolate is too bitter. Why consume the calories for bitter-tasting food? Admittedly, not a choc fan, here.

Why do people bitch about Cadbury?

Hershey's tastes like it's contaminated with machine oil.

by Anonymous | reply 29 | May 21, 2025 3:08 PM |
Lindt chocolate has lead in it.
If you have a good local chocolatier that sells them freshly made, that's usually the best.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | May 21, 2025 3:38 PM |
I used to buy Dove, but I don't anymore. I used to buy Cadbury, but I don't anymore. Now I only buy Hershey Kisses because the chocolate is not that good, so I'm not tempted to sit down with the entire bag in my lap like my mother used to do.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | May 21, 2025 3:59 PM |
I bought a big bag of Lindt mini chocolates at a duty free shop just before Christmas last year. Was looking for Cadbury but thought Lindt, which I'm not sure I ever had before, was "fancier." Filled my Christmas candy dishes with "fancy" Lindt.
After a few pieces I noticed the flavor and mouthfeel were... off. Slight metallic taste, and it coated the entire surface of my mouth, tongue and cheeks. I'd have to swish water in my mouth to get rid of that taste and "coated" feeling. The candy was largely untouched (my partner claimed he liked it but he has no sweet tooth, unlike fat whore me) and by late December I trashed what was left. I've never thrown chocolate out, not even Hershey's, I'd usually bring it to work or find a use for it in baking, but that shit had to go. Wouldn't wish it on my worst coworker and not slaving over cookie dough or whatever for shitty chocolate cookies. Trashed.
Never again.

Burdicks. Tiny. Pricey. Sublime.
Somewhat mass-market: Boston, NY, Chicago, DC, and NH.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | May 21, 2025 6:06 PM |
Look at the ingredients, if it had palm oil instead of cocoa butter, move on. I don't consider white chocolate "real" chocolate.
Otherwise, all of the small chocolatiers that make these bars are using the same three suppliers, Cargill, Callebaut, and Blommer. I prefer Callebaut brands, my favorite is Guittard. Most of them use one or two factories to comanufacture, but Ethel M's isn't too far away from any other Mars chocolate besides price point.

Coco Via by Mars was the best chocolate in the world. Everyone who tried it said that and was hooked. They stopped making it. Ask them to bring it back.

I'm a lifelong fan of Toblerone, especially the one with almonds. Andes also has a chocolate creme de menthe bar version which you can break off into squares that I love. Heath bar is another favorite, but with that one you have to like toffee more than you like chocolate.
