Mace went public in 2019 with the story about how she was raped as teenager. She was serving as a rep in the South Carolina House of Representatives at the time and there was a fetal heartbeat bill that was introduced. Mace wanted exceptions for rape and incest and said that she was raped at 16 by a classmate. Mace said that only her mother and best friend knew for many years.

This LA Times article from that time details how other female lawmakers had gone public with their stories of being raped prior to Mace revealing her story. Gretchen Whitmer is mentioned in the article because back when she was a state senator in Michigan she talked about being a victim of rape in college in response to "rape insurance law" that was being voted on in the state legislature.

The huge difference between Whitmer and Mace, is that Mace is very unhinged and obsessed way too much over the trans bathroom issue last fall, while Whitmer for her all faults is still down to earth and grounded person.
