Oh, a report from (places glasses)... "Newswire?"

From a post on "X?"

Sounds very reputable. Obviously true.

by Anonymousreply 1May 20, 2025 12:22 PM

Seems like they are already WAY past that crap in that UK.

by Anonymousreply 2May 20, 2025 12:25 PM

R1, it’s from The Independent.

by Anonymousreply 3May 20, 2025 1:07 PM

I would imagine it's immigration from areas like Africa driving the increase. I doubt your average northern chav has suddenly discovered The Lord.

by Anonymousreply 4May 20, 2025 1:16 PM

And if some of them have, it's just the pendulum swinging a bit the other way for generational reasons.

Also, I don't know how it is in the UK, but in the US, many of the millennials and Gen Z that turn away from or reject organized religion get into crystals, astrology, wicca/spells, etc. Thinking crystals will heal you, casting spells, or making relationship decisions based on astrology is not exactly humanity moving beyond this kind of thinking. Many people still want to believe in something even if it's not a "judgy" something, which I find interesting.

Four times next to no one is still next to no one.

by Anonymousreply 6May 20, 2025 1:28 PM

So it's up from 10 people to 40? Wow.

by Anonymousreply 7May 20, 2025 1:33 PM

Rather than label it "dumb," I think we should consider it a predictable outcome.

What's clear is that people, especially younger people are seeking something that I would loosely term "identity" in a world where they don't see good future prospects for jobs and income, where they're filled with "anxiety" and where things like social media tell them that they're failures compared to other people, including peers.

They're trying to find their place in the world. Inevitably religions, as well as other causes like hate groups, are going to get a foothold. These organization provide a place to point a finger which allows them to abdicate responsibility by either telling them that their misery is someone else's fault or part of a higher plan.

by Anonymousreply 8May 20, 2025 1:35 PM

It makes perfect sense why this is happening. People in the UK and America--not sure about the rest of the Anglosphere--feel like society is just not "working" as it should. Everything feels like it has gone haywire. When that happens, people turn to conservative/traditional institutions.

[quote]Also, I don't know how it is in the UK, but in the US, many of the millennials and Gen Z that turn away from or reject organized religion get into crystals, astrology, wicca/spells, etc.

Which is also superstitious bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 10May 20, 2025 2:04 PM

That was my point, r10.

by Anonymousreply 11May 20, 2025 2:06 PM

The report is from THE BIBLE SOCIETY - red flag - which the Independent doesn't seem to want to link to - red flag - and even if you accept their numbers - which you shouldn't - they claim that attendance has SKYROCKETED to 16% of Gen Z.

Which, of course, means that EIGHTY FOUR PERCENT of Gen Z does not. It is still a tiny, tiny, tiny minority. Even if it's true. Which it's not.

by Anonymousreply 12May 20, 2025 2:24 PM

There's no way anything increases 400% in a relatively short period of time. This is bullshit.

And the Indepedent article does not say 400% - more like 50% - and that's sus because the survey was done by The Bible Society, which is basically an evangelical organization that wants to provide Bibles around the world.

This report - of course you can't find details about the study - how many people were surveyed or what questions they were asked - is not scientific.

This is a PR piece disguised as a survey.

You always know it's a nonstory when a headline declares a "rise" in something.

by Anonymousreply 14May 20, 2025 4:01 PM

Lying for Jesus is OK though, right? It's a loophole for the commandment, right?

by Anonymousreply 15May 20, 2025 4:02 PM

Fuck your religion!
