The reality is probably that Hugh Jackman never was gay. I was one of those people that was pretty sure he was at one time. I'll admit that I was wrong. Nothing about his divorce from a long term marriage and a new affair with a woman makes any sense if he was gay. He makes musicals on Broadway. If DLF was his beard, and the marriage was ending, why in the world would he get another beard. If it doesn't make any sense, it isn't true.

Yes, his mother ran off overseas when he was about 12. As for performance having a stigma attached in Australia, maybe if you were a boy who did ballet, but Jackman went to WAAPA and did the non-musical drama course. I don't think there's any stigma at all in Australia about being a NIDA or WAAPA graduate in drama. They're the two most prestigious schools, and we don't assume every boy who acts is gay. (Unless we're a DLer, obviously.)

He could just be bi, or straight but once upon a time dabbled with guys to get ahead, since he started out in musical theatre (and doesn't have an incredible singing voice), so perhaps he developed a taste for the occasional gay encounter. What is definite here is that Sutton hit the jackpot, winding up with a big movie star. Her career was by no means small, but certainly not on his level in the entertainment world.

Personally, I think this is best for his ex-wife. Deborah is going to be 70 this year - the kids are out of the house, she has spent the last 20+ years following Hugh around from project to project, city to city. He wants to keep going. It would make so much more sense in a bearding situation for him to be on the road working and her to be home in Australia leading separate lives. That would be a win-win for both of them.
