That sure sounds like a young Kate Mulgrew doing the voiceover.

The wig on the model is a disaster.

That was a massive campaign. Impeccable art direction, editing, gorgeous fashions. Just great style all around. Nice to see some black models in the mix.

When I was a teen gayling my Mom and her friend jokingly called them Vagina Slimies.

2:32-2:40 Diana Muldaur!

R2- I agree. I love the fashions on the models and the music and everything about the commercials that's why I thought my fellow dataloungers would find them amusing.

R4- I LOVE that early 70's design. I think ca. 1971 was the last interesting time period for American Fashion and by the late70's fashion was tacky. 1980's fashions were HIDEOUS especially the permed and frizzed hair woman sported by 1985.

Virginia Slims sponsored women's tennis for a long time - the name sponsor of the tour for a while. Tournaments were named Virginia Slims of Philadelphia, Virginia Slims of Chicago, etc. And what is now the year-end WTA Championships was the Virginia Slims Championships - they even played best of 5 sets in the in final for years. It was a good partnership, but obviously couldn't continue as more and more bad info came about smoking (there was probably plenty to start with) and it was a bad look.

Billie Jean was a sell-out on that front. For the future sake of women’s tennis. Ahem.

Didn't the WTA recently sign on with the Saudis for big money?

by Anonymousreply 10May 19, 2025 12:38 AM

Eva Gabor collection

Aka "bitch sticks."

by Anonymousreply 12May 19, 2025 12:42 AM

"tailored for the feminine hand"

by Anonymousreply 13May 19, 2025 12:45 AM

Apparently the Virginia Slims ad(s) was the last one shown on TV before TV commercials for them were outlawed.

by Anonymousreply 14May 19, 2025 12:49 AM

No man hands!

by Anonymousreply 15May 19, 2025 12:53 AM

I surprised myself by singing along with the ad and knowing every word. Christ I'm old

I’d rather fight then switch. Actually, i want my Lemon flavored smokes that lasted about 10 minutes in the 1970s

They still sell them. I didn't know that until this thread which prompted me to look it up.

by Anonymousreply 18May 19, 2025 2:26 AM

R13- That's the best line.

I wonder if they were referring to certain HOMOSEXUALS

by Anonymousreply 19May 19, 2025 3:29 AM

Those fabulous Virginia Slims television commercials were geared towards college educated young women 18-24 ish.

by Anonymousreply 20May 19, 2025 3:31 AM

Doesn't datalounge agree- The very last commercial features a Farrah Fawcett look a like-ish

1968 also gave us this little ditty. And yes I remember every word.

She can bring home the bacon, fry it up in a pan.......

by Anonymousreply 23May 19, 2025 3:44 AM

I've watched some old cigarette commercials on Youtube and I can see why they were banned. They were so slickly produced and made smoking look so appealing. The production values were very high.
