Laundry Question: Do you still separate colors from whites?

Someone told me that this is no longer necessary with newer washing machines. That sounded sus to me. Have any of you DL homemakers heard this before?

by Anonymousreply 68May 19, 2025 11:43 PM

[quote] That sounded sus to me.

You sound like a 14-year-old girl.

How embarrassing.

by Anonymousreply 1May 18, 2025 5:06 PM

Yes. I wash my whites in hot water and bleach, which will ruin colored clothing.

by Anonymousreply 2May 18, 2025 5:07 PM

Oh fuck off R1. Either answer the question or crawl back under your rock.

by Anonymousreply 3May 18, 2025 5:07 PM

People used to scrub their clothes on big rocks

by Anonymousreply 4May 18, 2025 5:14 PM

I was molested by a colored man.

by Anonymousreply 5May 18, 2025 5:16 PM

Non-question. As R2 says, hot/warm water with bleach for whites. Don't bleach colors. It's not rocket science.

by Anonymousreply 6May 18, 2025 5:16 PM

Only if they’re new. After that I’ve never had a problem.

by Anonymousreply 7May 18, 2025 5:17 PM

OP, take a pic of your dingy, unbleached whites, and get back to us.

by Anonymousreply 8May 18, 2025 5:24 PM

I separate socks / underwear and towels from other clothes, but wash everything in hot with equal amounts Tide Bleach Alternative and Lestoil - I do big loads 2x a month at a laundromat.

My towels are blue, all underwear is black and all my socks are identical grey crew so I don’t have any true whites, but adding the Lestoil really gets everything quite clean.

by Anonymousreply 9May 18, 2025 5:28 PM

I don't feel comfortable segregating my laundry.

by Anonymousreply 10May 18, 2025 5:28 PM

It's so easy when you use Lestoil.

by Anonymousreply 11May 18, 2025 5:29 PM

Are you easy when you use Lestoil, R9?

by Anonymousreply 12May 18, 2025 5:30 PM

I wouldn't use hot water all the time when washing whites (or any clothes for that matter). It's not good on the fabric. And it is not necessary, unless you are digging ditches all day long. Warm water is best.

by Anonymousreply 13May 18, 2025 5:33 PM

Try washing a red garment that isn’t colorfast with whites and watch what happens.

by Anonymousreply 14May 18, 2025 5:38 PM

I’m deeply offended by this thread.

by Anonymousreply 15May 18, 2025 5:47 PM

I mix it altogether. If I have a concern about a color running, I throw in a few sheets of a generic color catcher.

by Anonymousreply 16May 18, 2025 5:49 PM

I wash everything in cold delicate and have noticed no difference.

by Anonymousreply 17May 18, 2025 5:50 PM

New clothes/items, yes. I don't have a ton of white-only clothes or towels though as they're so impractical.

So maybe buy less all white stuff?

by Anonymousreply 18May 18, 2025 5:53 PM

I don't buy any whites. I have 3 bins for sorting: 1 for things that get hung up at the end of the day, 1 for sheets/towels, and 1 for everything else.

by Anonymousreply 19May 18, 2025 6:28 PM

Who really has whites you can bleach anymore? All of my traditionally white items (towels, socks, underwear) are every color BUT white. I still wash them in hot. All other things get my washer's "Eco Warm" setting.

by Anonymousreply 20May 18, 2025 6:37 PM

Well Sylvia, I do. I have a drawer full of white, 100% cotton T-shirts that I wear everyday under a dress shirt. If you like them staying white and stain free, they need bleach..

by Anonymousreply 21May 18, 2025 6:46 PM

I wash everything together in cold water, and I've been doing it forever. And I hang my clothes on the line.

But then again, I'm a lesbian

by Anonymousreply 22May 18, 2025 7:16 PM

R21, exactly. I guess a lot of people here don't ever dress for business.

by Anonymousreply 23May 18, 2025 7:23 PM

OP, your question is so “mid.” Certainly not “iconic.” Definitely not “fire.”

You’ve “taken an L,” OP.

by Anonymousreply 24May 18, 2025 7:33 PM

Seriously, OP? You pay monthly for this?

by Anonymousreply 25May 18, 2025 7:40 PM

i do two white loads with detergent and oxibleach for white clothes. If weather allows, it goes on the line outside. This keeps white beautifully white. You can add pastels, too. ITs not about chlorine bleach and its not about the fear of bleeding colors, if you ad some lights. Its the brighteners and stain removers in the products for white.

If you dont or wont do this every time, you can do white washes sometimes.

by Anonymousreply 26May 18, 2025 7:41 PM

by the way there is oxibleach for colors now and it works on stains and dirt and does not fade the color.

by Anonymousreply 27May 18, 2025 7:42 PM

blacks, navy, dark grey and dark brown get black wash detergent and no oxi. this black load is effective in slowing the dulling of dark clothes. If you tumble dry darks, remember turn turn them inside out. IN fact turn them inside out to wash and try. this cuts down on the friction of the visible side of the cloth, and also keeps the black from going grey or uneven. Jeans as well.

by Anonymousreply 28May 18, 2025 7:44 PM

I drop my laundry off. They separate the whites from colors. Other than that I have no idea what they do.

by Anonymousreply 29May 18, 2025 7:45 PM

No, never done that

by Anonymousreply 30May 18, 2025 8:21 PM

If I'm on a mission to wash everything in a day and have just, say, a couple towels and white socks/tshirts as a last, small load, I'll throw them together. Your whites will darken a bit if you regularly wash with darker clothing.

by Anonymousreply 31May 18, 2025 8:41 PM

Honey, the only thing I still bleach is my hair.

by Anonymousreply 32May 18, 2025 8:50 PM

[quote] I guess a lot of people here don't ever dress for business.

WFH, bitches.

And the rest of DL retired 25 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 33May 18, 2025 9:06 PM

I don't see color.

by Anonymousreply 34May 18, 2025 9:06 PM

Wait, you shouldn’t wash colors in hot water?

by Anonymousreply 35May 18, 2025 9:15 PM

the only think that can be in hot water are bath kitchen and bed linens. And they don't have to be with modern wash chemicals. But it's fine, a swiss machine will give you 95C wash if you want it. Constantly chlorine bleaching linens doesn't do them a lot of good but occasional bleaches sure. Or maybe you don't care about the duration of your linens.

by Anonymousreply 36May 18, 2025 10:15 PM

R21 is the only person I've ever heard of so concerned about the whiteness of his undergarments. That's fine - but seriously, who cares about the whiteness of a t-shirt that no one sees under a dress shirt?

Do you all wear white briefs too? Sock garters? Pocket watch? Monocle? Handkerchief in the back pocket to wipe your brow?

by Anonymousreply 37May 18, 2025 11:06 PM

I separate colors. I wash my dress clothes separately too. Gawd, some of you are simply barbaric!

by Anonymousreply 38May 18, 2025 11:21 PM

No. Takes too much effort. I throw it all in the washer and hope for the best.

by Anonymousreply 39May 19, 2025 12:32 AM

R39's clothes have a "tie-dyed" look to them.

by Anonymousreply 40May 19, 2025 1:22 AM

I didn't realize until today that lesbians have their own laundry style

by Anonymousreply 41May 19, 2025 1:28 AM

I've been partnered for 30 years. Early on I almost decided that the relationship wasn't going to work because he washed underwear with rugs. That was a sign of mental deficiency. He isn't allowed to touch the wash now.

"Oh, you can use Oxyclean on colors." "Oh, you don't need to bleach whites anymore." No, just no.

by Anonymousreply 42May 19, 2025 1:31 AM

White socks, dress shirts, towels and washcloths get hot water and chlorine bleach. I go through enough to make a full load every other week.

Sheets and pillowcases get hot water in their own load.

Everything else (socks, underwear, t shirts, jeans, khakis) gets warm water since that’s the default setting on my washing machine.

Only some things like my daughter’s nice dresses and blouses are washed in cold water unless they’re really soiled.

by Anonymousreply 43May 19, 2025 1:38 AM

R42 😂

by Anonymousreply 44May 19, 2025 1:50 AM

oxygen bleach most definitely has a color safe version in europe.

by Anonymousreply 45May 19, 2025 2:01 AM

I separate and I wash with cold water. Line dry.

by Anonymousreply 46May 19, 2025 2:05 AM

r1 is correct. OP/r3 sounds like an idiot.

by Anonymousreply 47May 19, 2025 2:06 AM

Wow. Color catchers? I never heard of these. Learn something new on Datalounge.

by Anonymousreply 48May 19, 2025 2:06 AM

R42 had me dying - underwear with RUGS?

by Anonymousreply 49May 19, 2025 3:11 AM

Isn't Vanish for toilets?

by Anonymousreply 50May 19, 2025 3:35 AM

And what we call a Milky Way, they call a Mars Bar, R50.

by Anonymousreply 51May 19, 2025 4:25 AM

[quote] This keeps white beautifully white.

I always wondered whatever happened to the Madison Avenue copywriters for 70s commercials, and now I know.

by Anonymousreply 52May 19, 2025 4:51 AM

I divide laundry into muliple piles:

Blacks/very darks

Mediums/brights

Lights/pastels

Non bleach whites (t shirts/sheets)

Bleachable whites (bath and kitchen towels)

I used to only use hot for the bleachable whites but the water in our building isn't that hot. And, our laundry facilities are so gross I now use hot for pretty everything except more delicate fabrics.

by Anonymousreply 53May 19, 2025 5:13 AM

R53 do this wash first: the one that gets bleach or germ eliminating oxi bleach

by Anonymousreply 54May 19, 2025 1:05 PM

I use hot water for sheets and towels. Warm for whites, cold for darks. I separate all of these. I've never heard of"you don't need to separate with newer machines" either,

by Anonymousreply 55May 19, 2025 1:16 PM

Around 1990 I stopped.

by Anonymousreply 56May 19, 2025 1:33 PM

Hell yeah, R48! Color catchers even helps after the fact! When some underwear came out pink from a bleeding shirt in the load, I rewashed the pink items by themselves with a couple of Color Catcher sheets, have a slight pink tinge in certain light, but look white while wearing them: situation resolved.

New jeans are prime candidates for a catcher sheet in their first wash.

by Anonymousreply 58May 19, 2025 2:38 PM

OP's unseparated, free for all, everything goes in at once, pile of freshly washed laundry.

by Anonymousreply 59May 19, 2025 3:13 PM

Whites and light colors, then dark colors. Both in cold water. Line dried.

Sheets and towels in hot water, machine dried.

by Anonymousreply 60May 19, 2025 6:31 PM

Lestoil washes for everything? What kind of greasy fat pig are you? Do you work in garbage? A sewer?

by Anonymousreply 61May 19, 2025 6:35 PM

I discovered they still make Biz, so I got some the other day because I remember my Mom using this in the late 70s. It works.

by Anonymousreply 62May 19, 2025 10:38 PM

No. I wouldn't throw bright colors in there, or something that bleeds, but I don't really have a lot of that, anyway. Nor do I have a lot of white. I'd probably wash white with my towels that are also light and go on hot.

by Anonymousreply 63May 19, 2025 10:42 PM

My husband! Some hotshot! Here's his ancient Chinese secret: Calgon!

by Anonymousreply 64May 19, 2025 10:46 PM

For over 40 years this bitch has been sabotaging my laundry business. Every. God. Damn. Day.

Make me another double, Sam - I ain't in no hurry to go home to that cunt.

by Anonymousreply 65May 19, 2025 11:03 PM

I wash them on a rock

by Anonymousreply 66May 19, 2025 11:10 PM

Stealth racist thread

by Anonymousreply 67May 19, 2025 11:41 PM

They tell you that your clothing is bigoted - like colors, like fabrics. You could take a random sampling of labels, read them, and follow directions.

If your wardrobe is all sports jerseys and nylon culotte shorts, you can wash in any temperature as long as you use only one quarter cup and don’t put your fingers in your mouth after filling the machine. Wash your hands.

If the clothing is new, start it off in cold with like colors. Factories now offload the dye rinse onto consumers and British khaki needs to wash with darks that don’t pick up color.

Also, if you have button-fly pants, turn them inside out so the buttons don’t fuck with your other clothing.
