On the 13th Anniversary of her death, an interview with Donna Summer from 1995

13 years ago today, the world lost one of the greatest singers of the late 20th century - Donna Summer. She lost her battle with lung cancer, which shocked the world as she kept this illness a secret for nearly a year. She told only her closest friends and relatives. Her family broke the news to the media later in the morning, just hours after she passed at her home in Naples, FL.

Today I came across an interview with Summer that took place 30 years ago. In the interview she talks about the controversial 'AIDS quote' rumored to be hers, in the mid-80s which almost ended her career. She tells the interviewer:

“I never said it, I've never felt it, I hate it.” She looks at me squarely. “Paul Jabara was the guy that wrote ‘Last Dance’ for me as well as many other hits. He was my kid brother, my baby. He died from an AIDS-related illness just three years ago. That's just one person, and I have spent my entire adult life within the gay community. I’ve always felt that I’m not going to defend myself against these horrible charges, my friends know me, the gay communities who know me know that I couldn’t have said it. If I'd have murdered someone I'd be outta jail by now, but people hold something against me even though they've never heard this rumour other than tenth hand.”

I mention that although the subject is still hotly debated on the gay scene, I've never met anyone that actually read the quotes themselves. Similarly, some people think it was a TV interview, while others insist it was a newspaper. “Exactly,” Donna laughs, “it never appeared on TV or in a newspaper, that so-called quote just never happened. It’s just a nasty rumour which has caused me more heartache than anything else in my life.”

Great vocab on this broad.

I've never believed the rumors. I think she drew inward at a certain point of her life, but every interview I've read of her associates describe her as a loving person. Barbra selected her as her surrogate at the Oscars.

Sorry, bitch, but Giorgio Moroder — the producer who made you a star — blew your cover.

[quote]“Donna became quite religious,” says Moroder, as he strides past a wall of gold and platinum records. “She made me record a dance song about Jesus, dear God. And she really did not like gays — her attitude was sometimes difficult in the ’80s.” (Summer has denied ever making anti-gay statements.) “We were never ‘estranged,’ but for a long time we did not have the relationship we once did.”

Bitch was crazy. She also made statements that 9/11 was the Devil's work to specifically give her the lung cancer that killed her. Yeah, all that was done just to give you lung cancer...

Liars get..... D'oh!

Sources, please.

She turned her back on gays then lied about it-That’s $how-biz!

[quote]Bitch was crazy. She also made statements that 9/11 was the Devil's work to specifically give her the lung cancer that killed her. Yeah,

R5,

You’re a lying cunt. She never went public with her cancer diagnosis, so there is no ‘statement”.

When it comes to you, I hope Rosie O was right.

To curse someone with mortal illness because they did not respect your long-dead favorite diva is pretty shitty behavior, r9.

by Anonymousreply 10May 19, 2025 1:43 AM

Use Google R9. Use Google....and try to like better music. It might calm your nerves.

Geez, you really twisted the truth on this one .

After she died, her family said she believed the toxicity in the air from the towers falling on 9-11 and lingering over the city for days, could have been the source of her lung cancer. Many people were speculating the same thing . In addition, more than 18,000 New Yorkers claim they have fallen ill due to inhaling toxic dust particles.

She was staying in her Manhattan apartment that day, no too far from the towers. Scientists say it takes between five and 20 years for cancer to develop after exposure to toxic substances, and Summer was diagnosed ten years after the attacks.

Like many other Christians around the world, she theorized the Al Qaeda plot had been an attack on Christianity by Islamic radicals and so, in essence, she and fellow Christians had been its intended targets.

R12, her reasoning in your post is only slightly less stupid than R5's post.

by Anonymousreply 13May 19, 2025 3:17 AM

She worked hard for the money...

by Anonymousreply 14May 19, 2025 3:21 AM

She waited years before she addressed the rumors. If she'd had a competent management team instead of her idiot husband acting as her manager the rumors would've been squashed as soon as they appeared.

by Anonymousreply 15May 19, 2025 10:57 AM

R13 Stupid or not, it's accurate and I'm not posting to judge a dead person's reasoning.

IMO, history demands accuracy when discussing a deceased person's legacy, and what R5 did was twist and distort that accuracy to fit his agenda. Now if you want to discuss and criticize her judgment, that's a separate conversation you can start.

If her family wanted to cement her legacy as positive and not Judgemental why didn't they donate a portion of her estate to a LGB non profit??? Maybe SAGE?

by Anonymousreply 17May 19, 2025 8:03 PM

R17 How in the world do you know what her family did / didn't do with her estate over the past 13 years ?

by Anonymousreply 18May 19, 2025 11:19 PM

R7 Shit is a lie.

by Anonymousreply 19May 19, 2025 11:29 PM

Love Donna always …. The pre-Jesus, 70’s Donna.

by Anonymousreply 20May 19, 2025 11:29 PM

R20 And I love my pre Grid-Gays too.

by Anonymousreply 21May 19, 2025 11:35 PM

The AIDS comment grew out of her making an Adam and Steve joke that fell flat at a show.

I think her daughters had Moroder on a podcast but I’m not sure if they ever asked about the quote he made in the magazine. Bruce Sudano said he is more spiritual than religious but that religion stabilized Donna. Her daughter Brooklyn posts a lot of progressive things on instagram.

The documentary that Brooklyn made said that Donna saw herself as an actress more than a singer but that’s not something she ever pursued seriously after hitting it big despite having musical theatre roots.

by Anonymousreply 22May 19, 2025 11:41 PM

Its getting too late but they should cast Kelly Rowland for her biopic.

by Anonymousreply 23May 19, 2025 11:43 PM

Rowland is a good choice, though I'd also love to see Kelis in this hypothetical role. Can she act?

by Anonymousreply 24May 19, 2025 11:46 PM

They should cast Janelle James ("Abbott Elementary") as older Donna (40s and 50s). In some scenes of AE, she looks just like her.

by Anonymousreply 25May 19, 2025 11:47 PM

R19. Your life is a lie, Teafraud.

by Anonymousreply 26May 20, 2025 4:19 AM

R26 You see how you stay checking for me. Now all we gotta do is bring out the receipts. Last few dozen threads you done uttered my name out of your cum gutters. I’m just saying 🤷‍♂️. We gotta be real about these things.
