I think I finally figured out Pedro Pascal
This guy is everywhere. Everywhere. I think I finally figured out his appeal among the Hollywood casting gods and it’s not because he’s particularly talented or attractive. No.
He’s white but Hispanic so he can play the ethnic card while still landing white roles. He conveniently has a trans sister which apparently grants him expertise on all things queer, gender, and sexuality. Also, the guy just loves to loudly and frequently party.

I don't blame him for capitalizing on this very small window of opportunity. His "it" factor is finite. I'm not sure his thespian talents will carry him very far once his looks fade. (Example: Antonio Banderas.) In the meantime, I enjoy his looks and his sexually ambiguous charm.

Both in front and behind the camera.
Hence why many TV/films are shit these days.

He's extremely likable in a way even Banderas was not. And it's impressed me that when he works out a lot for the right role (like in The Last of Us) he ups his hotness factor quite a bit.

R24 Let's se how much his "stardom" will last once "The Last of Us" ends its run.

Pascal will always be a steadily working actor. If he continues in the mode he's presently in, he'll continue to get quality projects, mostly for television, and continue to rack up industry nominations.
He seems to be at the height of his career at this moment, the only question is how long this period will last. Another 3 or 4 years easily, I suspect.

I think he’s fine but there’s a lack of imagination and creativity in Hollywood that leads to certain actors getting all the jobs at once. It’s his turn—in a year or two my guess is he’ll take a break to counteract the overexposure, and it will be someone else’s turn.

I think the Pedro Pascal bubble will burst one day, and it won't be pretty.
Based on GOT I like him a lot. He's a very good actor. He's outspoken about lgbt topics.
But recently he is so overexposed he is everywhere, from SNL to TV and movies and social media. It seems he can't seem to shut up, he has to fight with Rowling, film his sister in Cannes, be aggressively vocal about anything and everything. This kind of overly confident demeaner will rub people the wrong way and there inevitably will be a backlash. I can see it coming in his case.

Not going to lie.
I wasn't familiar with 'the game' so my interest was basically about the hype of the show and how popular the game was to many. I was aware of PP from GOT and Narcos, so that was also my reason for watching it. I was hooked from the first episode. I was aware of the loss of 'Joel' in season 2 and I gave it a shot after he was killed, but I don't have any interest in Ellie and Dina's adventure to avenge his death. Let's be honest: the best part of the show was the relationship between Joel and Ellie. I feel sorry for Bella Ramsey, although she knew the direction of the show, but it's just no longer interesting. There's already been an announcement for Season 3, but, just going by the gamers on Tik Tok who are fans of the game, they are hating the season as well. They think the show's plot is less about the game and more about the relationship between Ellie and Dina.

This isn’t a Rock Hudson situation where the general public would be shocked to learn one of their favorite actors is a gay man. I do think at least some of his female fan base knows the truth, but he will definitely lose all of the straight bro fans he gained from Game of Thrones. It's one thing to suspect it, but to actually confirm it is career suicide in Hollywood. Pedro likely won't come out until after his momentum slows down, and his looks are long gone. Everyone knows he's gay. Even Helen Keller's skeleton knows. The media run stories about his gayness without clearly mentioning HE IS A HOMOSEXUAL. There is no attempt to hide it but there is also a lack of honesty and directness from him about it.
It reminds me of Luke Evans who butched himself and refused to talk about gay stuff for years while he established his movie career. He wasn't closeted as such but he wasn't out so the media could just hint about "beach days with his pal" and then he had the nerve to deny he had ever been anything but always out.

We're talking in circles. The entire foundation of Hollywood is something that doesn't really exist. Reality is more advanced than Hollywood, Sports, or other spheres that still feature compulsive heteronormativity.

Perhaps one reason he doesn’t officially come out is because he is enjoying the sudden mystery surrounding his sexuality.
As previously mentioned, and is my understanding, that in the earlier years of his career, he was unquestionably out. As in, people around him just assumed he was gay, it wasn’t all that relevant to the roles he was getting and pursuing, and there was no reason to publicly discuss it.
Once he was suddenly being submitted for and getting romantic leading he-man roles, he started to enjoy the sudden mystery surrounding his sexuality that hadn’t previously existed. A mystery, that also happened to be the cause of more and more offers of great roles in great projects. What can be more attractive about a person than mystery?
Why should he be in any hurry to extinguish the mystery?
He probably had lost out on a lot of parts, as the casting people thought he wouldn’t be believable playing straight.

The biggest problem with the “gay leading man can’t open a movie” debate is that it’s never actually been tested. Audiences aren’t the issue because the opportunity has never truly existed.
What is backed by data is that Hollywood consistently stops giving major roles to actors once they come out.
Matt Bomer was at his peak during Magic Mike, yet never given the kind of leading man push his charisma deserved. Or Luke Evans, who still managed to land convincing and even seductive roles post-coming out (he was great in Ma).
Now, for the first time, we’re getting a real-world test: Jonathan Bailey will lead a Jurassic World blockbuster this summer. This marks the first time an openly gay actor headlines a major franchise film at this scale.
So the idea that a gay man can’t be a box office draw? It’s not fact, it’s theory. And from where I stand, the real gatekeeper isn’t the audience. It’s Hollywood.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | May 26, 2025 12:56 PM
|
Matt Bomer was at his most visible, popular and bankable during Magic Mike. He had the looks, the talent, the charm and everything studios claim to want in a leading man. And instead of using that momentum to launch him into romantic leads or action roles, Hollywood buried him.
Same for Luke Evans.
So it’s Hollywood that’s the problem.
