Instant potatoes

Who eats these and why? I’ve never tasted them so I honestly don’t know about flavour but are they good? Also potatoes are a pretty easy thing to make and very cheap. Are these cheaper and easier? Are they even potatoes?

I buy instant potato cups sometimes just for the convenient. Fill one with water, microwave for a minute and a half, and it's ready.

Good to have a box/can on hand. Instant potato quickly with cream, heavy even, and butter. A deli owner gave he his trick, a bit sprinkled in tuna salad keeps it from being runny. I have used it successfully in thickening a spaghetti sauce.

They’re just dehydrated potatoes. I think they taste good and they’re ridiculously easy to make, but fresh mashed potatoes are still better.

by Anonymousreply 3May 17, 2025 11:34 PM

Instant potatoes are good for making potato rolls too.

by Anonymousreply 4May 17, 2025 11:39 PM

They’re ok in a pinch but I like the taste of instant polenta (corn grits) much better.

by Anonymousreply 5May 17, 2025 11:41 PM

Just microwave pierced Green Giant Golden potatoes for 5 - 7 minutes and you have the real thing. Top with salt, pepper, and butter....delicious, especially on a winter evening.

I want to try instant potatoes. Baked potatoes take so long.

by Anonymousreply 7May 17, 2025 11:48 PM

GREAT as a thickener for soups

Why eat this shit when you don't have to? Highly processed food is poison.

I like them and think they're tasty. Making mashed from scratch is alot and will only do it when I have company for dinner which is rare.

by Anonymousreply 10May 18, 2025 12:45 AM

They can be stored for much longer than regular potatoes and require less prep. That is the reason for their existence.

by Anonymousreply 11May 18, 2025 12:56 AM

My mother made them for us kids. She also made us powdered milk.

But we lived in the best school district in the area, so I never knew we were poor.

by Anonymousreply 12May 18, 2025 12:57 AM

I like the red package Idaho brand.

by Anonymousreply 13May 18, 2025 1:02 AM

They're useful for different bread machine recipes. I grew up with them, and even remember Julia Child using them, but haven't tried them for a long time.

Whatever you do, don’t pour an old box of potato flakes down the sink.

by Anonymousreply 15May 18, 2025 1:04 AM

Much worse - CANNED potatoes. DL fave and former First Concubine of NY made potato salad with canned potatoes. I almost gagged thinking about it.

by Anonymousreply 16May 18, 2025 2:33 AM

I think they're tasty. I grew up in a family where, as my French grandmother called them, podadoes were a big staple. I love the instants and honestly can't taste the difference.

How to dress up instant mashed potatoes:

They’re fine. I keep a box or package in my pantry at all times. Especially for hamburger gravy over them

by Anonymousreply 19May 19, 2025 3:26 AM

Make them with broth.

by Anonymousreply 20May 19, 2025 3:29 AM

Potatoes taste like nothing, the flavor is from all that shit people put on them.

Potatoes flakes are despair in a box.

by Anonymousreply 21May 19, 2025 3:35 AM

I usually purchased the flakes but tried the powder stuff that comes in a pouch and it didn't work for me. The pouch directions are to use the whole pouch for 4(?) servings, but as a single person, I tried to divide the potato powder to make one serving. My measurements were off and the end product was very very salty.

I have better luck with the flakes - easier to portion for one. Some of the flake potatoes taste fine, but I find some brands have flakes that don't blend into the milk completely. The texture is grainy no matter how much more liquid/butter I add or cook longer.

I love instant mashed potatoes. It's always been a guilty pleasure. I always pour a little beef stew over mine.

by Anonymousreply 23May 19, 2025 3:41 AM

Some of the new ones taste great and it's not that much different than regular mashed potatoes.

Some people can be such snobs - it's perfectly fine in a pinch. And it is great as a thickening agent.

“Excuse me, but what are Potato Buds?” “I don’t know, why don’t you put them through college?”

by Anonymousreply 25May 19, 2025 3:56 AM

Buck would never eat Idaho spuds!

by Anonymousreply 26May 19, 2025 4:24 AM

I have GI issues so I always have a four pack of the cups around. They're OK. Certainly no replacement for the real thing, and I wouldn't eat them all the time, but the Idaho brand in particular tastes pretty close to the real deal.

Instant potatoes are a great gluten-free substitute for bread crumbs when making panades for meatballs and meatloafs.

by Anonymousreply 28May 20, 2025 12:14 AM

I whip up a batch if I run out of lube.

by Anonymousreply 29May 20, 2025 12:47 AM

In Italy, potato flakes are used to thicken hot chocolate.

by Anonymousreply 30May 20, 2025 12:57 AM

I haven't had instant mashed potatoes in years probably because the last time i had them they looked like the glue we used to use in grade school and tasted like ass.

by Anonymousreply 31May 20, 2025 1:02 AM

There was some TikTok trend many months back that I didn't understand, having to do with using potato flakes as a means to vandalize people's front lawns just before it rains. Did anybody else ever make sense of that one?

by Anonymousreply 32May 20, 2025 3:30 AM

I haven't tried it, but I understand they are a good way to whip up a quick gnocchi dish. I'd recommend a recipe that uses an egg, and not just flour, water, and instant potatoes.

I remember my mother sometimes used to use them to make baked chicken, and I remember I liked it, but I haven't tried it.

by Anonymousreply 33May 20, 2025 3:41 AM

Bob's Red Mill instant potatoes (flakes) are quite good.

by Anonymousreply 34May 20, 2025 3:50 AM

My mother used to make these when we were kids. She also used powdered milk occasionally. R12. I hated them. They had a weird aftertaste. Fun fact: I got grounded once for asking if “we were going to have real potatoes tonight.“
