Explosion caused major damage to a fertility clinic and surrounding area. Clinic provides LGBT family planning services. Very alarming.

Sounds like at least one person has died..

Heard that the person in the car was blown out of the car and that part of their torso was laying in the middle of the road.

Just talked to someone I know who works in a building about half a mile down the street - that place was shut down because every window in their building was blown out.
(You can imagine how strong the blast was for that to happen)

Hopefully the only fatality came from the person driving the bomb-laden car.
But in PALM SPRINGS? Seriously? A reproductive center that does IVF?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | May 17, 2025 8:26 PM |
R8 That reproductive center did a lot of IVF for gays and lesbians. Which, if it was targeted, is likely the reason why.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | May 17, 2025 8:28 PM |
I went onto BlueSky to see what would come up when I searched "Palm Springs" and it was a lot of NSFW photos of cocks.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | May 17, 2025 8:28 PM |
A friend who lives in PS said it was about a mile from his house and the explosion scared the shit out of him.
He said the gays are being told to be cautious when going out tonight, because they don't know yet if there are other targets in the area.
I'd be staying home.

For a handful, sure - but let's not make it sound like this was a gay and lesbian reproductive center. It wasn't.

by Anonymous | reply 58 | May 18, 2025 2:54 AM |
Of course, he had a manifesto. There's always a new twist.
The suspect is Guy Edward Bartkus, a 25-year-old man from Twentynine Palms, a small city about 35 miles northeast of Palm Springs. He left a 30-minute audio recording in which he explained his motive for the attack.
“I figured I would just make a recording explaining why I’ve decided to bomb an IVF building, or clinic,” he said at the beginning of the recording. “Basically, it just comes down to I’m angry that I exist and that, you know, nobody got my consent to bring me here.”
by Anonymous | reply 59 | May 18, 2025 3:18 AM |
In a FAQ section of his website, he further explains that his best friend Sophie shared similar views and recently died after convincing her boyfriend to shoot her as she slept. “IIRC we had agreed that if one of us died, the other would probably soon follow,” Bartkus wrote.
His description seemed to match the death of 27-year-old Sophie Tinney in Fox Island, Washington on April 22. Police arrested her boyfriend, 29-year-old Lars Eugene Nelson, and believe Tinney convinced Nelson to shoot her in the head as she slept. Nelson was charged with second-degree murder.

Obviously, the clinic is successful, so it seems that younger people do exist in Riverside County.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | May 18, 2025 12:08 PM |
R78 - yes - and in other breaking news - water is wet.
Still doesn't make it out to be a G&L IVF center - and we know that G/L had nothing to do with the bomber's motivations.
Nobody said that young people don't exist in Coachella Valley. Not sure why you thought you had to mention this.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | May 18, 2025 1:53 PM |
Definitely weird motivation for the bomber.
But it *is* apparently a clinic that does have a lot of LGBT clients, so I can understand why, as people tried to make sense of the event, that was contemplated as a possible motive.
IVF in general is a sore point with some extremists, who see it as even worse that abortion. (This clinic did NOT provide abortion services, but when/if embryos or eggs are discarded, some of those loons see it as the same thing.)
It's terrible that it happened but I am somewhat relieved that it *wasn't* motivated by the bomber's hatred of anyone but himself.
It's also very lucky that the area where the clinic is located is a bit north of the central area of PS. Not that there's no one there, but the foot traffic is much lighter than if that had happened in a more central area. More people would have been hurt and possibly killed.

An abortion activist explained to me many years ago why the radical right hates Planned Parenthood and any and all medical services provided with any regard to family planning, whether it's performing just routine physical checkups on women through abortion: the radical right believes that life is, essentially, supposed to be random. Or, as they put it, man should not interfere in god's plan. They couch it as being anti-abortion because this is the most visible least-defensible form of birth control (her words, not mine so don't attack me), but it includes access to birth control and, as we've seen coming out of the Southern Baptist conference, access to IVF treatment. The SBC is working to limit, if not outright ban, IVF treatment; ie, if a couple can't conceive the old-fashioned way, it's god's plan.
The lights-flashing-look-here clue that this bombing/suspect is related to the rightwing religious nuts is the mention of consent. He specifically said in the recording "nobody got my consent to bring me here". Part of religious loon thinking is that god provides the consent for a human to be born, and it is man who looks to usurp that authority by claiming that anything to do with conception interferes with god's consensual authority.
Yeah, I know it's convoluted and defies reason, but isn't that religion in a nutshell?
We don't know enough yet to make any conclusions, but if I had to guess this kid was a religious (29 Palms is a typical military-adjacent low-rent religious fringe community in which every other building is a church, and the buildings between the churches are either tattoo parlors or bars) incel coming from a family with known mental issues (the "best friend" that various news sources have linked to him — mentioned in one of the sources I read — also shares the family name, and this person apparently convinced her boyfriend to shoot her in the head). He described himself as a "mortalist", a term I've never heard before, at least in this context. He's clearly self-loathing, as in the kind who wishes he had never been born: "These are people who are having kids after they’ve sat there and thought about it. How much more stupid can it get?”
The only aspect I can't quite see is that the clinic was located in gay-friendly Palm Springs and is well-known to work with gay couples. We can hope that orientation didn't figure into his thinking and planning, but my fear is that even if it didn't, the right will try to portray the clinic as supportive of gays and therefor even more deserving of the attack.

The doctrine that "bringing people into the world without their consent to spare them from future suffering" (NYP) is wrong is looney-tunes. How do you get anyone's consent to be born, even if you believe in the preexistence of the personal soul? R131 makes me think that the whole idea is just a rationalization ad absurdum of some rightwing religious fanaticism.

I'm still curious about the "out-of-country" license plate. The most common non-US plates seen are Canada and Mexico; we don't see too many from other countries. But he doesn't seem to be a foreigner. Maybe they meant "out-of-STATE"?

I know someone who is looking for an IVF clinic to conceive, I bet this is a good one. I'm glad the damage was limited.

I doubt this is some religious guy. Maybe from a religious family, but that's the norm in the US. I'm going with depressed, anti-natalist redditor type. Probably atheist. Left leaning in most areas. Probably has some weird sexual interests and difficulty having those interests met. Might hate women as a result.
He described his son as having been a boy who liked tinkering with small model rockets, and said that age 9, his son lit the family house on fire while playing with matches.
Mr. Bartkus, of Yucca Valley, Calif., said that as a teenager, his son would make “stink bombs” and “smoke bombs.” [bold]“Nothing major, nothing like a ‘bomb’ bomb, but he’d build rockets,[/bold]shoot them in the air,” Mr. Bartkus said.
added that his son was impressionable, and had often allowed himself to be drawn in by friends who got him into trouble. Once, for example, a friend whose parents owned a wrecking yard talked his son into smashing cars there, he said.
[Bold]Mr. Bartkus said he had taught his son to use firearms “Guy was a pretty good shot,” he said. “If he told you he was going to hit the C on a Coke can, he’d hit the C on the Coke can. Whatever he put his mind to, he was pretty good.”[/bold]
He said that when his son reached his late teens, he built computers and worked with special-needs children. “He wasn’t dumb,” Mr. Bartkus said. “But he wasn’t a leader. He was a follower.” He added: “If somebody came along and said this was a good idea, he’d probably go along with it.”
