My corn plant began to bloom

It's an amazing scent. 😍 It also means I'm an amazing gardener.

Jealous?

Not as moving as Bette Davis’ climactic speech in “The Corn 🌽 is Green”.

by Anonymousreply 1May 17, 2025 12:52 AM

Corn? When did I grow corn?

by Anonymousreply 2May 17, 2025 12:56 AM

Corn grows. It doesn't take a good gardener, or any gardener at all, Miss Burbank.

Never saw a 400 acre field full of corn with no irrigation or attention?

Get over yourself. Christ.

by Anonymousreply 3May 17, 2025 1:09 AM

It's a corn plant aka a cane plant. Not an ear of corn. I even posted a photo of the plant I have.

I am embarrassed for your, r3.

by Anonymousreply 4May 17, 2025 1:31 AM

R1 is about to fly right on out of here.

by Anonymousreply 5May 17, 2025 1:43 AM

You're embarrassed for my what, OP/R4

I guess I needed to sign it Emily Litella so the intent was more obvious.

Calm down.

And congratulations.

by Anonymousreply 6May 17, 2025 1:48 AM

^And sincerely, because I'd never seen one bloom before.

by Anonymousreply 7May 17, 2025 1:49 AM

Squatno, the famous Indian, buried a kernel along with a dead fish for fertilizer, according to the Peanuts special where the kids are among the lucky few who survive the winter.

by Anonymousreply 8May 17, 2025 1:50 AM

Damn, OP -- I didn't even know those things got blooms!

Thanks for the pic.

by Anonymousreply 9May 17, 2025 1:51 AM

"Your" is how I type "you" after three glasses of wine.

by Anonymousreply 10May 17, 2025 1:56 AM

IT'S MAIZE! STOP YOUR CULTURAL APPROPRIATION!

by Anonymousreply 11May 17, 2025 2:20 AM

Corn plant blooms smell horrible. What are you talking about, OP?`

by Anonymousreply 12May 17, 2025 2:22 AM

r3 likes to WW herself - how embarrassing

by Anonymousreply 13May 17, 2025 2:23 AM

r1 / r2 / r8 You are weirdly obsessed with this thread.

by Anonymousreply 14May 17, 2025 2:24 AM

R13 W&Ws herself three time. I didn't do it once, Shelob.

by Anonymousreply 15May 17, 2025 3:18 AM

This is the reason that good gardeners avoid common names for plants. OP has a plant named Dracaena fragrans. The Latin term fragrans MEANS fragrant.

The corn grown on farms and in vegetable gardens has the Latin name of Zea. Totally unrelated to Dracaena except for a superficial similarity of leaves.

by Anonymousreply 16May 17, 2025 6:43 AM

R16 = Mr. Green Jeans.

by Anonymousreply 17May 17, 2025 6:49 AM

Not only an amazing gardener, simply amazing OP 😉

by Anonymousreply 18May 17, 2025 9:26 AM

I didn know they bloom. Congrats! Alien looking flower.

by Anonymousreply 19May 17, 2025 9:30 AM

Squatno!? Ha, ha, ha!

by Anonymousreply 20May 17, 2025 9:41 AM

What a crazy thread!

by Anonymousreply 21May 17, 2025 11:49 AM

My aspidistra was savaged last night by a neighbor and he was very rough on my coral bells, too.

by Anonymousreply 22May 17, 2025 1:00 PM

Now show us the corns on your feet.

by Anonymousreply 23May 17, 2025 1:05 PM

Do you have calla lilies too?

by Anonymousreply 24May 17, 2025 1:10 PM

R14, being a scold and unwilling to perceive that such posts are requisite on the DL, is a stupid cunt. In her post at R13 she had already established the likelihood that she is a stupid cunt.

But we're all surprised that the OP can be such a fine gardener while being an alcoholic. Excuse me. A functional alcoholic.

Sadly, the fragrance has already dissipated. It smelled great, for a day. But on the other hand, my penis shrub began to sprout penises today. They are short and stout, like the ones in the photo. I'm avoiding the common name of EGGPLANT, per r16's suggestion.

^ This is why we can't have nice things.

by Anonymousreply 28May 17, 2025 10:18 PM

Good God, this poor guy was just trying to show off a house plant. You people don’t know how to act.

by Anonymousreply 29May 17, 2025 10:21 PM

How old is the plant, OP? Is this the first time it's bloomed.

Both your thumbs and big toes must be green! Thanks for sharing your plant's gift to you.

by Anonymousreply 30May 18, 2025 12:35 AM

There’s more than corn in Indiana! 🏖️

by Anonymousreply 31May 18, 2025 12:42 AM

Muriel! Muriel please!

by Anonymousreply 32May 18, 2025 12:46 AM

Thank you, r30! It's about eight years old. I have another one that branched off from it and it lives in another pot. I'm hoping it will also bloom. And I was wrong-- the scent is still there!

I fed it seaweed extract a month ago. I think that it is why it started blooming.

by Anonymousreply 33May 18, 2025 1:02 AM

What is seaweed extract, OP?

My five Christmas cacti didn't bloom for either Christmas or Easter and might need a dose of something this fall. Strange because they're usually full of flowers.

Maybe they're just depressed like the rest of us since the election. 🫣

by Anonymousreply 34May 18, 2025 1:36 AM

It's this stuff, r34. It's a plant hormone that's great for all plants. Even my prayer plant bloomed-- another difficult plant.

Thanks. I'll see if I can find it locally.

Now that spring is settling in, we could use a thread on caring for indoor plants. I remember someone last year or so who was a beginner indoor gardener with questions.

Hint Hint Wink.

by Anonymousreply 36May 18, 2025 1:47 AM

Speaking of indoor plants, has anyone had success with those indoor herbs and vegetable grow kits, the ones with the LEDs? 🤔🍅🌶🥬

by Anonymousreply 38May 18, 2025 4:42 AM

Aww Op. I’m so proud of you.

by Anonymousreply 39May 18, 2025 4:44 AM

I like Aerogarden but it’s finicky.’y best luck is shorter flowers. Lettuce was ok at first but got bitter. Dill grows easily.

by Anonymousreply 40May 18, 2025 4:45 AM

Finicky*
