For all those companies like Apple, they HAD to be in China because the consumer market was too big to avoid and the labor market was too big not to exploit. China was smart, though: if you want to manufacture there or sell there, you had to cough up your IP, know how, trade secrets, etc.
Now, not only have these companies lost their market in China, they will lose markets in other countries as China takes over there too. It is creeping toward existential for Europe auto makers now.
