A dire warning from WALMART expected today

Doug McMillon, Walmart's CEO, will be giving a dire warning to financial analysts, shareholders and customers today after studying their financial reports: prices will be going up significantly in their stores due to the 'magnitude of the tariffs, even at the reduced levels announced this week'. He says they are no longer able to absorb the increased tariff prices, given 'the reality of narrow retail margins'. Customers are expected to see the price hikes starting Monday morning at the world's largest retailer. Stock up on your caftans, false eyelashes, and ratchet wigs today.

The other day, Trump's commerce secretary told Americans 'don't believe the news that retailers will be raising prices due to the tariffs'. I guess WalMart is saying 'don't believe anything the Trump administration tells you'.

His base doesn't care, they see the right people getting hurt and they're more than willing to pay some extra money for that.
His base doesn't care, they see the right people getting hurt and they're more than willing to pay some extra money for that.

Are eggs still $750 a carton?

by Anonymousreply 2May 15, 2025 12:31 PM

It's funny. Just a few weeks he was assuring every financial analyst that Walmart would be fine. Walmart would always have lower prices than their competitors. That's probably even true. If all others double the prices for Chinese goods, and Walmart is raising prices by just 99%, they still undercut everyone else and remain the go-to retailer. I did not think though that Walmart would blink first and be the first to raise prices.

by Anonymousreply 3May 15, 2025 12:34 PM

Good. It sucks but I’m willing to suffer as long as his people start to feel the effects of the mess they’ve created.

It’s the only way to wake them up. I know it’s a long shot but still…something’s gotta give.

by Anonymousreply 4May 15, 2025 12:36 PM

Walmart hasn't had lower prices in decades. They became the store for people with no other options and then the store for people who have no other information.

by Anonymousreply 5May 15, 2025 12:39 PM

A few weeks ago (at Walmart), my Chobani yogurt went up in price from $4/four-pack to $4.67! I paid $6 for a box of Wheat Thins. My Extra gum went up from $3 for three 15-packs to $4. I could go on and on. What store would you recommend, R5? I know I could shop at Aldi, but they don't have what I'm looking for and they don't have the name brands I like.

TIA

Will Kmart be having a blue light special on boot straps?

by Anonymousreply 7May 15, 2025 12:43 PM

I think they'll notice, but due to a sense of tribal loyalty (guilt), they'll tell pollsters they're still loyal to Dear Leader.

by Anonymousreply 8May 15, 2025 12:48 PM

I’m already planning to buy only two dolls this year, a significant reduction.

Maybe there will be a wave of people turning to products they make themself. There’s a lot you can do with cardboard, strings, corncobs.

Thank you, Darfur Orphan. Your crafting input is always welcome.

by Anonymousreply 13May 15, 2025 2:27 PM

“Narrow retail margins” while they rake in billions and pay no taxes. We need to go back to the Marie Antoinette days and how problems like rich people were solved…

by Anonymousreply 14May 15, 2025 2:35 PM

Trump doesn’t care about people’s prices going up. Actually, he’s thrilled. He’s never happier than when he’s hoodwinking people. He gets active enjoyment from it.

He knows the same morons who voted for him are going to be paying tariffs into the federal government so he can cut his own taxes.

Then the same people he hoodwinked will passionately defend and support the whole heist? I’ll bet that gives him an erection.

by Anonymousreply 15May 15, 2025 2:38 PM

^^his followers will just blame China for the costs Dump is adding.

by Anonymousreply 16May 15, 2025 2:40 PM

And how quickly before Dump declares Walmart’s statement a hostile act against his administration. I’m sure the White House blonde bimbo press secretary- whatever the fuck her stupid name is - already has her speech prepared.

by Anonymousreply 17May 15, 2025 2:43 PM

I don't think he hoodwinks as such, like that. I think he convinces himself that every idea (scheme) in his head is brilliant, they are "smart" for going along with it. When they eventually fail, he calls it a "win" in his narcissistic head, it's then dismissed and on to the next losing proposition. That others lost out in listening to him is "these things happen" without empathy. I just don't think he actively plans to defraud, delighting with glee afterwards like that. More that he "fully deserves" the ill-got gains.

by Anonymousreply 18May 15, 2025 2:56 PM

my wacko maga family will just find a way to blame this on Hunter Biden's laptop, or Hillary, or Kamala...I just wish these maga cult worshipers would celebrate by drinking the 'special' kool aid.

by Anonymousreply 19May 15, 2025 2:57 PM

Exactly r16, they will look for excuses to blame anyone but Trump.

Meanwhile, with all the projected tax revenue from the tariffs (taxes on people buying Walmart goods of course), the republicans are pushing Trumps tax cuts for his benefit through Congress. And MAGA is behind it all.

Thats what cultists do — anything that benefits the divine presence is good for the entire world!

by Anonymousreply 20May 15, 2025 3:01 PM

At least corporate is giving their base a heads up. I'm looking at you, Mr. Weston, multibillionaire CEO of Loblaws. 😡😡😡😡

by Anonymousreply 21May 15, 2025 3:01 PM

Canadian retailers and hoteliers are going to make out like bandits from all the cross-border shopping and smuggling that is about to start.

by Anonymousreply 22May 15, 2025 3:05 PM

I’ve almost stopped shopping there completely. They’re not really much cheaper than other store as it is

by Anonymousreply 23May 15, 2025 3:09 PM

Wrong r22.

I have never stepped foot in a Walmart, nor have I ever bought anything online from them....I don't give a fuck! FUCK THEM!
His base doesn't care, they see the right people getting hurt and they're more than willing to pay some extra money for that.

R1, it looks like his base aren’t the only ones who feel this way.

I give you R4, the other side of the same idiot coin.
Good. It sucks but I’m willing to suffer as long as his people start to feel the effects of the mess they’ve created.

Guess that means there is no one left who actually cares about tariffs!

by Anonymousreply 31May 15, 2025 3:49 PM

^ I don't care for his base. His base never learns because they love a leader who doesn't make their brain hurt. In terms of voting with a brain, I only count on the center independents. I hope their brains return when the prices go up.

by Anonymousreply 32May 15, 2025 3:54 PM
they'll tell pollsters they're still loyal to Dear Leader.

Depends on the polls. If you conduct a good poll you can get beyond that. They can ask what purchase you no longer do or defer to a later time. Or they can ask about the preferred grocery store this year etc. That should get you not only a sense who and how many are impacted but also to what extent. And then your campaign can consider the results and cater to them.

by Anonymousreply 33May 15, 2025 3:57 PM

“His base are willing to pay higher prices”

LOL no they are not. They will complain to high heaven, and many of them genuinely cannot afford this cost of living. What they will do is seek to find someone, anyone else to blame for it but Trump. He has not really highlighted Peter Navarro’s role in it (even though this whole scheme was really Navarro’s idea) enough to register with low information MAGA voters so it will probably be Elon that he throws under the bus for it, since Elon is halfway there already.

by Anonymousreply 34May 15, 2025 4:03 PM

Wait but Trump just told us inflation is the lowest it's been in years?

by Anonymousreply 35May 15, 2025 4:21 PM

Just as I loaded this thread, a notification from Twitter popped up on my phone regarding a post from one of the voluminous rightwing shit posters suggested that wholesale prices fell by 0.5% in April, and of course the MAGAts immediately jumped in with the "See, Trump is winning and the tariffs will work!" ill-informed bullshit. I didn't read too far into the thread (but noted that Elmo is now allowing thread viewing without being logged in, a change since the last time I tried to read a thread after deleting my account) to get to the one single cogent reply pointing out that wholesale prices fell because of 1) declining demand and 2) a collective holding-of-breath by retailers and importers as we attempt to navigate the chaos. In every conversation I've had since inauguration day, the words "wait and see' figure prominently.

I can confirm that sales declined by about 30% when the realization hit that the tariffs were going to have outsized unintended consequences. Americans were not spending in April the way that they did January through March, and May looks to stay on that track. Retail prices have begun inching up as senior lesbian writes @R6, and interestingly, the media has failed to cover these except for suggesting that these increases are not being driven by the tariffs. Clueless as usual, but I don't know how you dismiss the chaos surrounding retail right now, and that includes the portion of the media that supposedly focuses on retail. I guess I am the only person in retail or periphery whose email inbox is full of pending wholesale price increase notifications.

And those emails tell of a tragically avoidable coming catastrophe. Most have used the pending increases as a sales tool (as in buy now before the prices go up) with their prices increases scheduled beginning June 1 when most importers will have run out of inventory bought before this shitshow rained down. Retailers will have no choice but to increase their prices on the same schedule that Walmart is talking about now that we have 90 days of relative stability, so we can expect a one-two punch as prices go up over the Summer, and then just as we're settling in for the fourth quarter (when most retailers make their profit for the year), we'll take another hit as Shitler overturns the apple cart going back on his words yet again. You can read that as the Chinese tariffs are not a done deal by any stretch of the imagination.

I'm feeling rather pessimistic this morning having read about Apple's Chinese conundrum (they can't truly manufacture iPhones anywhere outside of China, phones assembled in India rely completely on Chinese components, they put hundreds of $billions into Chinese infrastructure, and have trained more than 28 million workers in the last decade, and for comparison, that's more than the entire workforce in California; Apple might as well be a Chinese company), but I fear that the only question before America at this point is whether we'll have a deep recession lasting years or a full-on depression that will last a decade or longer.

by Anonymousreply 36May 15, 2025 4:29 PM

🎶 Mister, we could use a man like Donald Trump again. 🎶

🎶 Those were THE DAAAAAAYS! 🎶

by Anonymousreply 37May 15, 2025 4:36 PM

Apple is shite anyways....android is wayyyy better.

by Anonymousreply 38May 15, 2025 4:46 PM

The percentage of Wal-Mart merchandise that is “cheap shit from China” (my description, but imports from China with Wal-Mart customers in mind) is estimated to be between 60% and 80%.

60% to 80%. They are absolutely “going to go through some things.”

by Anonymousreply 39May 15, 2025 6:05 PM

Too bad Mountain Dew and insulin aren’t made in China.

by Anonymousreply 40May 15, 2025 6:14 PM

Yeah -- I get it -- but how does that affect the food I buy that is 100% made in the USA? I'm not buying [bold]food[/bold] that's made in China. How does that explain the price increase of my Chobani yogurt? They did that hike about a month ago.

by Anonymousreply 41May 15, 2025 6:17 PM

R41, you should be buying Great Value.

by Anonymousreply 42May 15, 2025 6:28 PM

You will probably be lining up to buy it soon.

by Anonymousreply 43May 15, 2025 6:29 PM

What are your Chobani containers made of, r41?

by Anonymousreply 44May 15, 2025 6:31 PM

Hmmm... We don't make plastic in the US?

by Anonymousreply 45May 15, 2025 6:32 PM

r45 -
China produces the most plastics globally, accounting for 32% of global plastic production in 2021. Other major producers include the United States and the European Union, each accounting for about 18% and 15% of global production, respectively

by Anonymousreply 46May 15, 2025 6:34 PM

Trust me. As either Covid, there will be greedflation, and you will never know what’s tariffs or what’s billionaire corporations just taking advantage of the situation. And you can bet prices will never drop. We’re continually bent over by corporations.

by Anonymousreply 47May 15, 2025 6:37 PM

As with** ^^

by Anonymousreply 48May 15, 2025 6:38 PM

i agree with r1, the base will rejoice at paying more as long as the libs are owned

by Anonymousreply 49May 15, 2025 6:41 PM

That was my point exactly, R47.

I don't know why people were saying the opposite, i.e., it's because of the tariffs.

by Anonymousreply 50May 15, 2025 6:41 PM

r50, you aren't r44.

by Anonymousreply 51May 15, 2025 6:45 PM

Sorry -- you're right. I'm R41.

Damn I'm old.

by Anonymousreply 52May 15, 2025 6:55 PM

Where will I get my Ol' Roy dog food now?

by Anonymousreply 53May 15, 2025 6:56 PM

R53 - yiu can get some roadkill from your buddy RFK Jr’s freezer.

by Anonymousreply 54May 15, 2025 9:31 PM

Do they really want us to believe they're working off 'narrow retail margins' ? They didn't become the world's biggest retailer and survive by working off of 'narrow retail margins'.

by Anonymousreply 55May 15, 2025 9:38 PM

Agreed with those that said this is BULLSHIT and they are just taking advantage of consumers

by Anonymousreply 56May 15, 2025 10:20 PM

WM’s margins are pretty narrow. But they are ruthless. They can squeeze change out of a mil (a tenth of a penny).

Between their WM stores, Sam’s Club, payment platforms and websites their footprint is humongous.

Making even 1% profit on more than 1/2 trillion dollars in sales is a Lot of money.

by Anonymousreply 57May 16, 2025 10:25 AM

"I did not think though that Walmart would blink first and be the first to raise prices."

Walmart would throw babies, puppies, and kitties into a plastic shredder for a few pennies. They were one of the least likely to absorb some of the tariffs and hold off on raising prices.

by Anonymousreply 58May 16, 2025 10:43 AM

Didn’t it come out recently that one of the Walmart heiresses was anti-Trump?

Seem to remember that. And it has softened me up just a bit to them, especially compared to Amazon.

by Anonymousreply 59May 16, 2025 10:51 AM

^ I think some of the Walton grandchildren are never Trumpers. They've done a lot in the NW Arkansas area for getting biking/hiking trails established. So at least they're trying to do some good with all of that $$$.
