Datalounge, what do you do with toenail clippings?
Ever clip your toenails and then make a tidy pile of the clippings and ask yourself, “what now?”
I usually flush them tbh, but is that a waste of water? And then they go to raw sewage treatment. Both result in waste and expense.
Should they be discarded in a garden or yard instead? Are they good for the environment? I’ll bet there are tiny organisms that use the keratin for one thing or another.
Or are there other things one can do with them? Please share your toenail disposal strategy. Thank you.

But then don’t they go into a toxic landfill?
I know they don’t seem like much, but think of all the people in your city. That’s a lot of toes. Don’t those discarded toenails add up — the pile would be like a sand dune.

There is a nondenominational temple to toenail clippings on a mountain behind Woodstock NY. OP are you too fucking lazy and deplorable to do the right thing? Your clippings could help nourish many acres of Mountain-laurel.

[quote]I usually flush them tbh, but is that a waste of water? And then they go to raw sewage treatment.
It's not only a waste of water, it's also not what is supposed to go down the toilet. You should only flush stuff that can dissolve on its way to the treatment facility, i.e. liquids and turds and toilet paper and an occasional small cotton pad. That's why they're constantly warning against flushing wet wipes because they can clog up the sewage AND it fucks with their equipment at the facility. Those toenails probably don't even make it out of your house or apartment, they just collect at the bottom of your sewage system.
Just throw them in the regular trash, it's biological matter that will degrade over time. You should be more worried about microplastics in your facial products that find their way into the ocean and then into our food.

I’ve had it done by a podiatrist for a couple of years now thanks to diabetes and Medicare. Unless it’s the bloody corner of an ingrown nail he’s taking out with tweezers, I’ve never seen where the clippings go. But I’ve never seen or felt any on the floor, either, so the room must be super cleaned between patients.
I’ll watch more carefully next time.

No joke, I've been using clippings, finger and toe nails, for years in my kitchen.
As long as they're fungus free, keep in a glass jar and blitz up whenever you're out of flour. My choc chip cookies are always a hit at work. I've never let on that I use half almond flour and half keratin flour because people get weird about stuff sometimes. But even the young vegan receptionist loves the cookies, and keratin flour is a great natural protein source for her.
The taste is not detectable, and my bechamel sauce is a favourite of the whole family. They'd never believe my secret ingredient was finger and toe nails!
I mean, think about it. We eat most parts of an animal. To me, throwing away clippings is so wasteful. People espouse paddock to plate, this is my own version - clipping to cupboard!

R77, whenever you get a bad chemical smell on the floor, you assume it’s Fenty. Crack smells of cat pee and Fenty smells like somebody opened a bag of chemicals. Burnt hair and other things often disguise drug use in the shelter.
We have creative people who burn a lot of things when they turn a shelter into their night-time activity center.
However, I do pride myself on provisioning clients so they have clean feets.
Don’t fuck with a clean queen in the shelter! I have supplies and I will push them on you when you are stoned and you will use them because I said so. Hopefully, I’m pleasant when I settle you down with clippers.
