Utah wins best state for third year in a row

Is it because they have fewer, um, "minorities"?

how disgusting

by Anonymousreply 1May 14, 2025 4:11 PM

US News & World Report always fluffs up places and cities in the US that most people would never want to live in.

It's middle-aged, suburban, white people driving SUV catnip. Their rankings probably correlate to the number of fast-casual eating spots like Olive Garden and Chili's.

Fuck Utah - among some awful choices, they really come off as the weirdest state for good reason.

by Anonymousreply 2May 14, 2025 4:15 PM

OP’s question shows who OP is from orbit

by Anonymousreply 3May 14, 2025 4:15 PM

Salt Lake City is actually kind of cool and the state has numerous beautiful national parks.

It's a shame about the Mormon politics though.

by Anonymousreply 4May 14, 2025 4:19 PM

My favorite state is Catatonic. Or Vegetative.

by Anonymousreply 5May 14, 2025 4:23 PM

I like Utah. It is incredibly beautiful and I found the people very friendly and chill. SLC is only about 20% Mormon. I think they just made some pride/trans flag an official state flag or something. There are a MLK Jr and Harvey Milk boulevards in SLC. I wasn't in the city long enough to check out the gay scene, which I'm too old for anyway, so much for inclusivity & diversity.

by Anonymousreply 6May 14, 2025 4:44 PM

R6 - you were only there a short time And no - SLC county is just less than half Mormon and the city itself is 35-40% Mormon. That's a LOT and would have a profound impact on the culture and vibe.

Visiting for a weekend isn't the same as being there for months and some of the weird vibes you can come across.

I don't want to be anywhere where almost half the people I come across are in a cult.

by Anonymousreply 7May 14, 2025 4:50 PM

R7 And "woke" isn't a cult?

The whole trans/nonbinary ideology is not supported by science/biology, either, and requires a leap of faith.

In ultra-liberal places like California, you can be arrested and your whole life ruined for not going along with that fantasy.

by Anonymousreply 8May 14, 2025 5:01 PM

R8 - hyperbole much? Don't you have a MAGA meeting to attend?

Arrested? Jesus Christ - turn off Fox News. I live in California - your imagined hell-hole. It's not at all what you say.

Woke does not equal trans/nonbinary ideology. And it is not a religion with tax-exempt policies that enrich the Mormons and allows them to spend freely to pass hate laws like in...oh CALIFORNIA!

Weirdo.

by Anonymousreply 9May 14, 2025 5:05 PM

R8, what the fuck? I'm pretty sure I'm Californian my whole life and I've never been arrested for saying anything that goes against the grain.

Turn off the FOX News some time. It'll do your brain some good.

[quote]I don't want to be anywhere where almost half the people I come across are in a cult.

How is Mormonism a "cult" any more than any organized religion is a cult? As far as I'm concerned, the shit "normal" Christians believe is not much more far-fetched than what Mormons buy into.

by Anonymousreply 12May 14, 2025 5:44 PM

mormonism is most certainly a cult

by Anonymousreply 13May 14, 2025 6:00 PM

In a horrible Sophie's Choice, I'd choose Mormons over Evangelicals.

by Anonymousreply 14May 14, 2025 6:02 PM

I would not

by Anonymousreply 15May 14, 2025 6:04 PM

R15, I would. The south is basically the way that it is because of Evangelicals. Evangelicals are the ones steering national policy right now. FUCK THEM. I hope they burn in the fictional hell that they truly believe in.

by Anonymousreply 16May 14, 2025 6:07 PM

R8 is one of those people who think his religious liberties are being infringed upon if he isn't allowed to spew his hatred for people different from him.

Just like DL's antitrans lunatics.

by Anonymousreply 17May 14, 2025 6:14 PM

If you like boring, suburban life (even in SLC) then Utah is at least a geographically gorgeous place to live that kind of life. People are nice in a programmed, gentle way so long as you avoid the preachy ones that will try to convert you.

by Anonymousreply 18May 14, 2025 6:20 PM

i hate suburbia so no thanks

by Anonymousreply 19May 14, 2025 6:34 PM

I don’t have any idea why you feel that way, r7.

I mean, what could go wrong???

R9, block our friend from Pittsburgh at r8 instead of engaging it. Engagement is what it wants.

by Anonymousreply 21May 14, 2025 6:45 PM

I can't tell if R12 is trying to be look smart with his relativist view or if he's actually dumb.

by Anonymousreply 22May 14, 2025 7:03 PM

R20 - I think that's the after pic of some tourists drinking Southern Sweet Tea. I'm pretty sure that's what it was.

by Anonymousreply 23May 14, 2025 7:05 PM

Perhaps because of the missionaries there’s more immigrants in SLC than I expected.

by Anonymousreply 24May 14, 2025 9:28 PM

[quote]Is it because they have fewer, um, "minorities"?

Yes, and therefore, less crime.

by Anonymousreply 25May 14, 2025 9:38 PM

R5 = Terri Schiavo

by Anonymousreply 26May 14, 2025 11:10 PM

Utah is great for outdoor activities but so is Washington state and Colorado. I think the deeply conservative politics cancel out a lot of the benefits.

by Anonymousreply 27May 14, 2025 11:46 PM

R2 Their rankings probably correlate to the number of fast-casual eating spots like Olive Garden and Chili's.

Thats BS and you know it. Salt Lake City is pretty awesome.

“Their rankings probably correlate to the number of fast-casual eating spots like Olive Garden and Chili's.”

by Anonymousreply 28May 14, 2025 11:48 PM

R28 - I'm talking about their 'best cities to live' list. Have you seen it?

Some choice selections: Greenville, SC; Green Bay, WI; Sarasota, FL; Virginia Beach, VA; Huntsville, AL; Oklahoma City, OK. I've been to all of these - they're all bastard love-childs of Bland and Boring. And there are a lot of chain restaurants.

I stand by what I said - it's a list of places for bland white middle-aged people - and nothing says that more than #1 Utah.

by Anonymousreply 29May 15, 2025 12:30 AM

[quote]I can't tell if [R12] is trying to be look smart with his relativist view or if he's actually dumb.

So you think people that believe there is a something called "God" who had a son, who died and is coming back is logical, scientific thinking?

by Anonymousreply 30May 15, 2025 2:42 AM

[quote]mormonism is most certainly a cult

Never said it wasn't. What I said is that ALL organized religions are cults.

by Anonymousreply 31May 15, 2025 2:43 AM

Of the fifteen most educated states, only one, Utah, voted for Trump.
