Who here has been to Cabo?

How does it compare to PV, Mazatlan, or other Mexican beach resort towns?

Is there a gay scene?

I’ve been to Cabo, but I’ve never been to me

by Anonymousreply 1May 10, 2025 1:27 AM

I’ve been about 25 years ago. Wall to wall timeshares and Canadians.

This will be of no help to you OP, but I like telling this story....

I went to Cabo once in 1986 (age 19) with my best friend's family & LOVED it! We stayed at the coolest little resort called Hotel Twin Dolphin (44-rooms), which bit the dust about 20 years ago. It was just SO gorgeous...and yet, pretty low-key. If you check out old photos, it wasn't terribly extravagant. In 1985-86, its big "amenities" (outside of beautiful little cove for snorkeling & a pool with a swim-up bar) were a pair of tennis courts, and a scenic two-mile jogging/walking trail-loop. LOL

That property is now part a massive "Twin Dolphin" luxury development with multimillion-dollar homes, numerous swimming pools, tennis courts, pickleball courts, a golf course, etc. 🤮 It's a little depressing to look at aerial photographs of Then & Now.

But I have incredibly fond memories of that trip! We had so much fun, including two noteworthy celeb encounters, by DL standards.

The first was Susan Dey, who was staying at Twin Dolphin that week (with her boyfriend) while recovering from knee surgery. It was sorta funny because to us, she was still just "Laurie Partridge" at that point (L.A. Law was 5-6 months away). We said hello to her one day by the pool with her knee propped up, and she was very friendly -- or at least indulged these well-meaning 19 year-old girls in a little chit-chat. She may have been a little drunk/doped up, and we learned that she'd fucked up her knee while skiing. We skiied, too -- talked about skiing a bit, wished her well, etc. And for the rest of the week, we'd smile & wave at each other in the dining room, or by the pool.

AND THEN, one afternoon while having cocktails at another resort to the South (because that's what you did in the late afternoons)...Grace Jones walked by us returning from the beach, wearing a flowy white robe over her white swim suit (one-piece, extremely high cut). My jaw was on the floor.....she was the simply the most incredible, striking human being I'd ever seen.

Is Acapulco still a thing or is that too 1992?

by Anonymousreply 4May 10, 2025 5:11 AM

It’s a LOT more expensive. Much more spread out. It’s more of a “go to your resort and hang out there” kind of place vs having a “gay scene”. If you want a gay scene experience, Vallarta is your place.

I randomly looked to hotel prices for Cancun, and they seemed really reasonable. Average about $100/night.

R4 Acapulco is definitely NOT a place to visit anymore. It had become terribly overridden by cartels and was quite unsafe. Then two years ago, it was completely devastated by a hurricane that went from a category 1 to a category 5 in the 12 hours before it made landfall. I remember when it hit that I went to bed thinking it was no big deal only to wake up the next day to a category 5 hitting Acapulco dead on.

Note this quote from the wiki page:

“The rapid intensification of Otis was among the most poorly forecast in the modern era. Meteorologists Jeff Masters and Bob Henson at Yale University called the underestimation "one of the biggest and most consequential forecast-model misses of recent years". Numerical weather prediction models failed to capture the magnitude of explosive intensification that occurred, in part due to a dearth of data.”

R7 I just recall a couple from Illinois went there and left kids at home before it was cool. And you guessed it, 1992.

No. I've never been. I have taste and money.

Which Mexican resort city on the Pacific coast has the best beaches?

by Anonymousreply 10May 10, 2025 6:28 AM

R3 We didn’t like reading it

by Anonymousreply 11May 10, 2025 6:30 AM

Oh well, R11. 🤷‍♀️ Sorry, but that's what happened?

by Anonymousreply 12May 10, 2025 6:39 AM

I loved the story, r12. Seeing Grace Jones would be a real treat.

by Anonymousreply 13May 10, 2025 7:26 AM

Why? She was “ubi iquitous”—as the Romans would say.

by Anonymousreply 14May 10, 2025 7:33 AM

Foolish idiot, R14.

I work to three white trash women who would go once a year with their husbands and it was definitely talked about 4 months before they went and four months when they got back like it was the biggest deal ever yes they were Trump voters so maybe my bad I assumed it was just all white trash and and overpriced s*** and not worth my time.

I've only been to Cabo on cruises and it reminded me of a Mexican version of the southern California coast. Lots of condos, restaurants and bars, and shopping. It's definitely a resort city -- there's not much other "there" there, unlike, say Mazatlan, which is an actual working city.

by Anonymousreply 17May 10, 2025 2:32 PM

It depends on where you stay. The Montage and One and Only are both awesome. I was there last year and while expensive, it was NOT overrun with the cartels.
